  1. Great article! Thanks for posting that!
  2. try tinkyada pastas---they are the best!
  3. you might only be temporarily lactose intolerant....once you have healed from the celiac damage, lactose might be fine again. was the marg. and mayo you used "safe." .... i.e., nothing was ever dipped in it that had gluten remnants? (knife that was making a 'samwich' with non-gluten free bread, and then dipped back in?) Like others have said, we have...
  4. No, she does not need both genes for it. Just having the gene does not mean that you have Celiac. But, about 99% of people who have Celiac, have one or both of the genes (they are still trying to figure out if there are other genes involved). The blood testing is usually the "first" step in diagnoses. There is the full Celiac panel (blood test) that...
  5. I would suggest contacting the Harrisburg support group and asking for references from them. (I don't live in H-burg anymore, but have heard good things from my mom (not celiac-just supportive of me) about the group there.) Open Original Shared Link this dr at hershey med center has "celiac disease" listed as one of her clinical interests. Just from...
  6. Lori, One of my favorite analogies of Celiac is pregnancy. Two women might both be pregnant but react very differently. One might be super cute, have no problems, and glow. Another might be hunched over the toilet for 9 miserable months. Either way, the women are still pregnant. It is similar to Celiac. You can't be a little bit Celiac (or a little bit...
  7. honestly, i don't know....but on the surface level, it would "seem" that you still have gluten! maybe someone else can offer a better answer.
  8. Are you following the gluten free diet?
  9. Short answer: Yes, like a roller coaster Here are some reasons why you might not be feeling well. You've only been gluten free for 6 weeks. While it seems like an eternity, your body is probably still healing. Regardless of if you are 100% gluten free, your body may still be having trouble digesting foods, and your vitamins, minerals, etc might...
  10. agreed-even when managers are involved, it doesn't matter sometimes! my rule of thumb is, If I haven't prepared it myself, I don't know 100% what is in it! Mistakes do happen.... hope you feel better soon, beverly. poor thing
  11. Hi David-Welcome to the board! I don't live in PA anymore, but I went to high school and PSU. My parents still live in Mechanicsburg and I'm home often. I was diagnosed after I moved away, but my mom has gone to numerous events, etc., in the area. Apparently the Harrisburg support group is great---she met the president of the group and thought she was...
  12. Lisa-My husband works for WVEC and he had told his station about it but they didn't report on it. Maybe now they'll do it since WAVY has!
  13. susie-just so you know, i was also diagnosed with fibromyalgia before I was diagnosed with Celiac. Once I went 100% gluten free, I don't have pain anymore. I only have the pain return when I have been glutened (and it is one of the tell tale signs). I think that I was misdiagnosed and never had fibro! But, that being said, there ARE others on this board...
  14. vincent-they do have chicken nuggets, chicken strips, etc..... are you just saying they are not prepared in the same fryer? just asking. I am a big supporter of chick fil a ..... looooooooooove them.
  15. ohhh i miss buffalo wild wings...... so yummy!
  16. Jillian, you are a star.....I know someone famous
  17. I believe it was one of the Celiac "experts" at Columbia (Dr. Green, maybe?) who said recently that pure, uncontaminated oats are safe. I think there are two brands---McCann's is one, and I can't think of the other one. I just made a dessert with it last weekend and it was great! If you do a search on this board, you should be able to find the thread about...
  18. see this link that I responded to about a week ago: Open Original Shared Link
  19. I don't own any books except one cookbook which I really don't use....pretty much everything I get is online! An endoscopy/biopsy is usually only done if one is eating gluten....so if you go on the gluten free diet and have a biopsy, it will likely come back negative (unless you haven't finished healing). Some doctors consider the biopsy the "gold standard...
  20. David, Coming from a girl who originally thought the fries were safe, then kept getting sick from them, and have since banished them about 6 months ago, THANK YOU for sharing this info with others. Can you please let us know if this story gets picked up?
  21. Yes-I learned that about the soy sauce too (even from a more "upscale" Mexican place in Atlanta. For that matter, many "American" foods like chicken breasts have soy sauce in the marinade). It depends on the place, but the sauces (for enchiladas, etc) have a good chance of having wheat in them. Don Pablo's (not authentic Mexican, but it will suffice...
  22. Even though I know what I want (I have a standard meal at each place!), I always ask for the gluten free menu so that they KNOW I am asking for gluten free. I also tell the server (if the server seems knowledgable, otherwise I get a manager) to ask the cooks if they can use clean utensils, etc. A lot of times they'll say something to the effect of, "oh that...
  23. Aww, Cheri, I'm sorry about the Chick-Fil-A fries....but, I guess you are used to it since your little one is allergic to "mother nature." Poor thing. Next time I'm there, I'll eat one for yall....
  24. Hey Laura (from another Laura), I'm sorry to hear that your mom is being "less than supportive." How frustrating for you when you are trying to cope with it yourself. Like you need someone else's issues to deal with, right!! Everyone on this board knows that someone with Celiac is NOT making this up, it is not in their head, etc.... who would want...
  25. Julie-It seems from my reading on this board, there are a "select" bunch of Celiacs who cannot tolerate distilled alcohols and vinegars. Most people can. However, some vinegars are not made from wheat---I'm pretty sure Heinz vinegar is made from corn? I just looked it up on the Heinz page: Heinz Ketchup does not contain any gluten (the distilled...
