  1. While the classic damage is usually in the small intestine, the side effects, per se, of gluten can be anywhere....so yes, stomach problems are a common symptom, or anywhere else that you described for that matter. Some people have no symptoms, some people have every symptom in the book, etc..... Hope she gets over her first glutening soon. I also take...

  3. ok, ive officially lost my mind. I went back and saw it (page 1154 in case anyone's particularly interested---ha!) and now I remember reading it (bc I compared it to mine). And how could we forget the discussion of the men in that post sorry bev, i had forgotten i read it... i think i am "less than ideal"---not sure if i'm starting a flare, or out...
  4. It was me who asked Definitely have the full celiac blood panel run before she goes gluten-free (if she does.) Print out the above list from the Columbia Celiac Center's webpage, bring to your doctor, and tell them you want them all run. If you are going through the process of being tested, its important to have all the information (not just ...
  5. Lisa, i certainly hope that you find some answers. As many symptoms as you have, you definitely need to be under medical care, so im happy you are getting it. you efinitely need to know the root cause of all of this. hugs to you, mia. I'm hoping this weekend to sit down and have some time to catch up...and you are on my list. i think the 'youngins...
  6. chrissy: i'm waiting to be reimbursed, i'll let you know.
  7. I'd definitely get a new doctor, but that's just me from another thread about pregnancy (but, this poster was dx'ed) Open Original Shared Link from the above story: "I now felt encouraged to explore further. In August of 2000, I attended the 9th International Symposium on Celiac Disease in Baltimore, Maryland. The very first lecture solved...
  8. Because of the Food Labeling Law, food sold in the US must disclose any of the 8 main allergens. Wheat is one of them. So, modified food starch is safe from wheat unless is says "modified wheat starch" or "modified starch-wheat" etc. Generally, it is made from corn. I have not seen a mfs from rye, barley, or oats. If you have any questions, it is always...
  9. From Dr. Green's page: Open Original Shared Link "What is dermatitis herpetiformis (DH)? DH is an intensely itchy vesicular rash occurring anywhere on the body, especially on the extensor surfaces (knees and elbows) and the scalp. Patients tend to experience the rash in the same area, for example on their hands, in their scalp or on the buttocks. Virtually...
  10. I don't have any info on the other products you used, but keep in mind that you have been on the diet for a very, very short amount of time. If you have Celiac, your body hasn't healed, and hasn't started absorbing nutrients, etc. You *may* be eating gluten free, but your body is still having trouble digesting certain things. This is all just something...
  11. chrissy: at the least, you need the IgG and IgM western blot for lyme.
  12. there have been a few discussions on this...im not sure if any of the people whose kids have it are still around. hopefully, they'll post. do a search, you should find something, if no one is around. also check out www.apfed.org...its the best resource out there for EE disorders.
  13. If you want a biopsy done (regardless of blood test results), you will have to end up at a gastro anyways. A gastro or internal med can run the bloodwork---but make sure that they are running the correct and full celiac panel. I don't think there's an easy answer on this one....I think some can say their GI was better informed than their IM, some their...
  14. chrisbee: im happy that you have some answers for your daughter. you must be relieved and overwhelmed at the same time. best of luck, and hope that you continue to stick around.

    ARCHIVED Gi Rant

Best of luck, Liz. I hope you get some answers. Make sure you get a copy of the pathology report when your results come in.
  17. kilcan: wow, good for you! im happy that you will have the procedure much sooner, due to your action. And of course, let us know how it goes. best of luck!
  18. Wow, it amazes me that drs are so misinformed. Amazing because the tests measure an antibody response to gluten, and those who are Celiacs, once on a strict/maintained diet, return to "normal" levels (i.e., don't look like a Celiac anymore) because there is no gluten to react to. "A gluten-free diet should not be started until all diagnostic tests...
  19. Find out what Celiac tests were run, post the results and the reference range. (best to get a copy for your own files) If she is positive on tTG or EMA, those are the two "best" tests for Celiac. But, the WHOLE panel should have been run. Her symptoms and test scores, to me, sound like she has a problem with gluten. False negatives are more common...

  21. gluten is gluten is gluten is gluten (etc) to a Celiac. Lack or less of symptoms does NOT mean that you are ok. If you get glutened your 'switch' is turned on (autoimmune) and it is attacking your body. Goal is to keep the switch off. There is no gluten lite, only gluten free, to have true results from the diet. the pregnancy analogy is one of my...

I don't think you can get much better, esp since they are right down the road. www.celiacdiseasecenter.columbia.edu is the site (which is VERY informative) Open Original Shared Link info about appts.
