ARCHIVED Can You Please Describe Your Feeling Of Brain Fog?
elonwy replied to azmom3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've always described it as that feeling when you first wake up after a bad night and your brain is all fuzzy and cloudy and stupid, only it doesn't go away. I got glutened last night by some Amy's and I just put my coffee cup in the bathroom sink and walked away. B12 really, really helps. I also get really depressed and lethargic. grrrr. Elonwy Just... -
ARCHIVED I Glutened Myself...on Purpose!
elonwy replied to flxmanning's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Have you tried KAri-Out? It comes in individual packets like ketchup. I bought a 500-pack box from the supplier in White Plains, because i like it best, and always like to have soy sauce in my purse cause I eat alot of sushi. Thats the smallest order you can make with them. I think there is a place online you can buy the individual packets, but if you'd like... -
I finally got to sleep about 6am. Thank goodness its the weekend. I'm still gurlgy, but its calmed down a bit. I'm just exhausted and irritated. I just got over being really sick for a week because of an absessed tooth, so I was looking forward to having some off-work days being well, but so much for that. I think the thing that bugs me the most is the losing...

ARCHIVED Reflux Came Back/got Worse After Gluten?
elonwy replied to e&j0304's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My first Big symptom of Celiac was really bad reflux that was uncontrollable with medication. Now I don't get it unless I get exposed to gluten. If i get exposed to gluten it often comes back for a few days or a week, then goes away once its out of my system. Elonwy -
People on here have been talking about reacting to Amy's products and cross-contamination issues. I've always been fine with the enchiladas, they've been great back up food for when I just don't want to cook. I had the cheese enchiladas tonight and its 4am and I'm running to the bathroom with D every twenty minutes, and have horrible stomach cramps. I'm...

ARCHIVED Ignorant Server Of The Day
elonwy replied to floridanative's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I can't ever remember what its called, but I can tell you exactly where it is. On the corner of Franklin and Highland is a little shopping center, and its the second door over from highland. Its really nice, and once you're inside you forget you're in a mini-mall. The dining cards help alot, as much of the staff doesn't speak great english. They do well... -
ARCHIVED New Member - Long Standing Cs (long Post)
elonwy replied to RKB-MD's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I use Nulev for the tummy aches, bloating and gas. I can't stand bananas, I don't do "mushy" fruit, so I'm unhelpful there. Taco Bell is evil. I've found that fast food really depends on the restaurant. I have a BK, a Mcdoo and a Wendy's near my work. I watched my ex-husband have a heart attack at 35 while eating a McD's Cheeseburger, so I don't think... -
I oddly think I sweat more now that I'm gluten free. Could just be the heat waves though. Elonwy

I take Sonata. I get really bad insomnia when glutened, had it my whole life really, nothing worse than being exhausted and unable to sleep. Sonata is a prescription sleep aid that is non-addictive and very mild. Unlike other sleep aids, as long as you get four hours on it, you don't wake up groggy. You take it 20 minutes before you want to sleep and then...

I would definitly check out the Wild Oats. Are you in Vancouver? There is one Wild Oats there, the only one in Washington. There is a Whole Foods in Seattle and one in Bellevue. Order gluten-free beer online from Bevmo: Open Original Shared Link Its like Costco for booze. Its amazing. Also if you go to one of the health food chains, they will have great...

ARCHIVED I Need Help!
elonwy replied to Gluten Slayer's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Open Original Shared Link Danna Korn is awesome. I found a book read it cover to cover, then found this place. It explains alot of important things in great detail that help alot. I recommend it heartily as a good starting place and manual. I carried it with me everywhere for a while, and now I don't need it, but I think it will really help with that whole... -
Is it a regular grocery store or a health food store? The regular grocery store can be a bit daunting at first, until you find that their are whole aisles you can just breeze by and it makes the trip that much shorter. Do you have a large health food type store in your area? Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Wild Oats. etc? They have lists on hand in thier stores...

ARCHIVED I Glutened Myself...on Purpose!
elonwy replied to flxmanning's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
When I was four months gluten-free, I went home for Christmas to see my mom. I'm from Hawaii, and everything there is made with soy sauce. I was good for a week, and then I went by the local store in the Village my mom lives near. The same old Japanese lady has been making musubi there since I was a kid. Musubi is a type of square sushi, often served warm... -
ARCHIVED "modified Food Starch" In Curly Fries... What Do You Think?
elonwy replied to hineini's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Did the ingredients include the coating on the fries and the stuff they sprinkle on it? Do the fries look like french fries with stuff sprinkled on them, or are they brown and crunchy. The brown and crunchy ones usually have flour on them. Modified food starch, when not identified, is always a red flag. There is alot of modified food starch that is made... -
I've never been able to eat in the morning. When the hunger pangs hit around 11am, I have a little bag of nuts of a small piece of fruit to hold off till lunch. If I eat a big breakfast or a lot of carbs in the morning it makes me feel really ill. I've been this way since I was a kid, and gluten free has made me even a bit more sensitive I think. Try smaller...

ARCHIVED Uncomfortable (literally) Question
elonwy replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This is gross, but appropriate, just throwing up a warning. When I get glutened, and before I knew to go gluten-free, I got these fun things called anal fissures. These are tiny little perforations kinda like paper cuts, that occur right around the sphincter. They're really hard to see, they itch like hell, and it hurts like blazes to go to the bathroom... -
I just remembered that the place where the doc accused me of being on drugs was actually a Kaiser hospital. They really do suck. Elonwy

Beano now lists "trace amounts" of wheat on thier products, so that may not be an answer anymore. It always made my stomach hurt worse than whatever I was trying to take it for. I take Nulev, which is a prescription medicine for IBS which helps with gas, bloating and cramps. I usually only take it for an accidental glutening. Beans make me gassy, and I try...

I got accused of being anorexic all through high school. Its hugely frustrating. At least you know that that's NOT what it is. They had me half convinced I was deluding myself and maybe did have an eating disorder since I didn't find out about Celiac until 10 years later. That's really terrible that they are treating you that way, but IMHO HMO's suck. I...

ARCHIVED Corn Tortillas Dusted W/ Wheat Flour?
elonwy replied to luvs2eat's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Often places that make thier own tortillas will make the corn ones on the same table area as the flour ones, which leaves them covered in flour. They could also dust them to prevent them from sticking. Elonwy -

ARCHIVED Going To Have Thai Food Tonight
elonwy replied to VegasCeliacBuckeye's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Looking at the Lotus of Siam menu online, heres what looks safe (obviously the asking still apllies, but I know you know that) No Appetizers Soups: Woon SEn Soup, Vegetable soup, Seafood soup with Tofu MOst of the salads without the dressings ( be careful about the minced pork, also usually pre-marinated) Specials: NUA NAM TOK ALA CArte: PAD WOONSEN... -
ARCHIVED Going To Have Thai Food Tonight
elonwy replied to VegasCeliacBuckeye's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Paraphrased from my Triumph card: (leaving out the obvious) Bad: Oyster Sauce Maybe Bad: Spring roll wrappers ( the vietnamese rice ones are ok, the clear ones they don't fry) satay, curries, fish sauce. I usually get a rice noodle dish like spicy Rad Na (spel?) and if they aren't sure about the sauce have them leave it out. Beware of beef that has...
