  1. Be careful with info you get from doctors, it can often be outdated and wrong. Corn Pops were ok, but haven't been for over a year. I also had a dietician tell me spelt was ok. Its not. The unfortunate thing is we do have to double check everything, and there is currently no FDA standard for gluten free, so sometimes stuff is labeled gluten free and isn...
  2. Oh, I didn't realize you were in Canada. Foods can have different gluten-free status in different countries, the info I was giving you was for the US. If you go to the canandian website of many companies, kraft, hormel, etc they will tell you what products they have that are gluten-free. I don't eat rice cakes. The white corn mission tortillas do well in...
  3. I've mentioned this in a couple places now, but I see so many people posting having trouble making meals, buying groceries, etc. Before I was Diagnosed I was very much into the South Beach Diet, not so much for wiegh reasons, but because my ex-husband had heart issues at 35 years old, and I decided eating healthier was a good idea. Phase 1 of South beach...
  4. Wow, that made me cry. I'm so happy you finally know whats wrong. And not to be horrendously selfish, but I'm super-grateful I've been diagnosed at 28. There aren't that many Celiac specialists out there. I think the best you can hope for if you're not in Maryland or San Deigo is a GI who is familiar with it. My doctors are friendly, but not that knowledgable...
  5. I'm going to echo with NO NO NO NO NO! In regards to Subway - My fav thing before being diagnosed was subway salads, ate em like three days a week. After being diagnosed I figure, no problem, its just a salad. The problem is, everything in Subway is covered in bread crumbs. Even if they change thier gloves, the last 20 times they dipped thier hands in...
  6. LOL. Turn the tables on em. I've banished anyone in my dept from using my microwave unless they can prove to me thier food is gluten-free. Its in my office, so its easy to control. I've also shown up to several parties with my own food in my purse, and been able to be pretty discreet about it. I've found that after the initial Wha? people get bored with...
  7. Unfortunately those items are things that are really hard to find at a regular grocery store. I find I just don't eat that much bread these days. I use lettuce when I'm doing hamburgers, and use corn tortillas for hot dogs, and such. I keep a loaf of Kinnikinnik bread in the freezer and take out slices as I need them. Other than the Cocoa and Fruity Pebbles...
  8. I found that one of the most profound gluten symptoms I had was uncontrollable rage for no reason, and that once the gluten free diet kicked in after a couple months, I don't have that anymore. It was the wierdest thing. I would get spitting mad at the stupidest little thing, to the point of kicking the wall or whatever, and I would also be soo irritable...

I'm not knocking you at all Packard, but advice to a "newbie" needs to be very carefully given out. I was given some bad information when I was new, and it kept me sick a bit longer than neccessary. It was mentioned that even if you don't have an immediate GI reaction, damage is still being done. THIS IS VERY TRUE. If your immune system is responding to...

  11. To add on to what Rusia said, cats also need more protien than dogs do, so would not get an adequate amount of protien from a dog food. Elonwy
  12. For food weaning, I recommend starting off with an 80-20 ratio, old food 80, new food twenty, and then upping the new food every two days until its all new food. You still might get some initial barfing, and if the barfing doesn't lessen after one week on the new food, it may be no good for him. Some people I know use a combination of cooked rice, meat broth...
  13. yeah you can't just switch them, you have to wean them off one and onto the other, usually takes 1-2 weeks. Cats are creatures of habit. heck, you aren't even supposed to switch litter on them suddenly, or they can stop using thier box because its unfamiliar. My current cats don't barf unless they eat a foriegn object, string being the worst culprit, but...
  14. Wyeth claims that all of thier products are gluten free. Elonwy
  15. The dietician I saw printed a bunch of stuff off the internetwhile I sat and watched, and then read it to me. She wanted to be helpful, but just had no idea. The best thing she did was point me here. No mention of vitamins. I take a multi though. Elonwy
  16. AMC popcorn is gluten-free, and so are thier Tostitos nachos. Yum. Elonwy
  17. I didn't gain or lose weight, but I did lose the bloating, which had always made me feel ten lbs heavier. I never really had weight problems though. I'm 5'1 & 3/8" and weigh 130lbs. Elonwy
  18. I had to switch to wheat and oat free cat food, because I got severly glutened by dust spray from my cats dry cat food. I opened the bag to feed them, and the bag poofed dust right into my face, and I was sick for about 3 days. Not so fun. The best bet for finding cat food without wheat and oats is pet food stores, grocery store pet food brands are usually...
  19. It was just there, I watched it like ten minutes ago ( I teared up a bit too) and now I can't find the video. I predict that our ranks will swell after this though, I mean I demanded the blood test because of a magazine article. Elonwy
  20. There are several possible sources of gluten. The oil mixture that the popcorn is popped in, whether or not they use a popcorn seasoning instead of just regular salt, and the "butter" mixture put on the popcorn. I have contacted the theaters I go to at the corporate level, and gotten my answers that way. AMC nachos are fine, as they are a tostitos frito/lay...
  21. I've taken it several times for yeast infections that were induced by having to take antibiotics, and I've never had a single side effect other than slight sleepiness. And everything on the planet makes me qeausy. I've never heard horror stories from friends either, or had warnings from my doctor on side effects. HTH Elonwy
  22. Its totally ok to cry. I've gone to the bathroom in several restaurants to cry my eyes out when things haven't gone well. My most recent was when they brought me the wrong food after a lengtly discussion ( busboy brought me the wrong plate, was the ordinary dish instead of my specially fixed one) and I took a bite before it was caught. I didn't even feel...
  23. I've had marvelous luck with this actually. My best friend Jenny goes out of her way to make sure she won't make me sick, down to having different cookware for me. Whenever I'm going over there to eat the entire day and sometimes the day before, we're on the phone, she'll go over an ingredient list and then I'll give her brands that work, then she'll often...
  24. On the toaster oven, we have a mixed usage toaster oven, and basically whenever my food is in there I put tin foil down. I also wipe it down quite often in case of splatter. Our toaster oven is a crazy deluxe model we got as an Xmas gift in 2004 and I was not about to go buy a new one, so I cleaned it thouroughly and we developed a tinfoil and who goes first...
