ARCHIVED Just Got Back From A Doctor Who Knew!
gatita replied to Liquidceliac's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That's great you found a doc who "gets" you! Sounds like you know you can't eat gluten.... like me, there is NO way I can eat enough gluten to go for a biopsy, and luckily my doc also said my strong reaction and a few other signs and tests were good enough for him. My next step is going to be testing for nutritional deficiencies, will you be doing that... -
ARCHIVED Testing - Is It Necessary?
gatita replied to eleanorj's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Also, for what it's worth, if you really need a piece of paper from an M.D. saying he must be gluten-free for life, Enterolab provides one if his anti-gliadin antibody stool test is positive. I wanted the paper and got that before my own doc came around. -
I've seen that sore tongue and some mouth problems can be both symptoms of celiac and/or B vitamin deficiencies, but on the old posts here, most people say it cleared up after going gluten-free. I'm 6 months gluten-free this week and am only rarely glutened anymore (yipee!! ) But suddenly I have this sore, cracked tongue, enlarged taste buds, and even...

ARCHIVED Can Food Intolerances Be Just Bacteria Overgrowth In The Small Intestines?
gatita replied to Simona19's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I've been wondering all year if I also have SIBO, but my docs are taking forever to refer me to a GI. I'm going to ask for the test when I do go though, because it still seems like totally random foods set me off. Thanks for sharing your experience, I'm so glad you found something that helped!- 13 replies

Adalaide, that sounds like a win-win program. I visit a lot of people in prison as part of my job, and it often involves spending en entire day with them in the visiting room. I have a heck of a time figuring out what to eat. It's the only "eating out" I do anymore LOL. So far, I've only been glutened once, but I often just go hungry. Friends tell...

Oh my goodness that must be frustrating. I don't know much about crohn's but understand that gluten can be a problem for may crohn's sufferers, too, so perhaps going gluten-free would help that too? I wish you had a clearer diagnosis, but it's great that the crohn's forum people are so supportive -- like here. I'm also glad your man is getting on board...

ARCHIVED Help--Recently Diagnosed--Mostly Vegetarian Eater......gluten Free Diet Panic
gatita replied to sofismom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was never a big beer drinker but I understand the occasional Corona craving. I drink hard cider now (Trader Joe's has a really nice pear cider) and enjoy it a lot! I think the biggest change at first for many (me anyway) is not eating out. It took me months to realize I...just...can't...do it. That was always one of my favorite pleasures. I've gotten... -

ARCHIVED Dr. Peter Green - 2012 Cdc Conference
gatita replied to Lisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Boy do I agree with this! I could not be scoped because of duodenal ulcers and so will never have that "gold standard" diagnosis since I can't go back on gluten... I do respect Dr. Green too... but nobody knows everything. I also can't tolerate probiotics but am glad they've helped others. I want to try them again someday, but I sure wish they were cheaper... -
ARCHIVED How Does This Happen?
gatita replied to discodiver's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I feel the same way... I was very happily eating pasta and garlic bread until one day last June — wham! Even though with hindsight I can see some symptoms going way back, it was never severe like this. It still seems so surreal... Not sure what the stressor was, but it's the only explanation that makes any sense... -
ARCHIVED Almost Gave My Celiac Mother A Lecture...
gatita replied to Pegleg84's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Kareng's idea of buying the red items is great! I was going to say go ahead and give her a new set of everything as a special gift from you (your stepfather can use the old stuff so she doesn't have to throw it out and feel bad). I'm sure she'll appreciate it -- I know I would! -
ARCHIVED Stupid Mistake - I Should Know Better By Now..
gatita replied to LauraB0927's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ouch!!! As soon as I saw the title of your post I could relate. I think this is one of the few diseases where it's easy to blame ourselves every time we have a relapse... I know I always feel guilty when I call in sick, as if my boss is thinking "What stupid thing did you do now?" Arrrgh.... Hope it wasn't too bad this time. -
ARCHIVED Verbal Diagnosis--Push For More Testing?
gatita replied to Kerceli's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree you have a very advanced doctor. Because I don't have the word "celiac" in my record, I'm having a hard time getting a GI referral that my insurance will cover. It's very frustrating.... So it sounds like your diagnosis is a good thing that may help you get any additional testing you need. -
ARCHIVED Dealing With Accidental Gluten Ingestion
gatita replied to MyTummyHurts8's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I feel your pain... After a month of feeling good (other than a flu that wouldn't quit), I got glutened again on Saturday I always get D really bad, so if I have to work or travel, I take immodium, which can get me through the first few days. But basically, I feel it just postpones the inevitable so I try to avoid it if I can. The only good thing... -
I'm so glad glad part of the news is very good -- the 'it's not cancer, not messing with the optic' nerve part. Now I will wish you the best on the treatment... I also have a friend who had brain surgery for a nonmalignant tumor (very large one) 20 years ago when she was 50 and she hasn't mssed a beat since, so I hope yours goes even better.

ARCHIVED Still Have Withdrawal Symptoms Month Into Diet
gatita replied to Dempsey's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
First off, do check out the celiac 101 thread for newbies on this site: http://www.celiac.co...ewbie-info-101/ I probably have more questions for you than answers, lol. Have you been tested yet for celiac? What makes you think you don't have it? I guess you know that once on the gluten-free diet, it's hard to get an accurate test. If it turns... -
Oh no!! How awful to hear this.... sending (((hugs)))

ARCHIVED What Does It Take To Have A Gluten-Free Home?
gatita replied to CaliSparrow's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
And check your pet food. I finally got around to this and found the third ingredient in my cat's canned food is wheat gluten. That means I have to wash my hands every single time I pet him. Once this batch runs out, I won't buy it again. -
ARCHIVED Parasite Therapy For Autoimmune Diseases
gatita replied to trents's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Wow, this is interesting. It does seem sometimes that we in the US are too sanitized for own good. On the other hand, having lived in Mexico and suffering several very severe bouts of amebic dysentery, I may be one of the last folks you'll see voluntarily ingesting any more parasites. -
ARCHIVED Allergy To Gluten Vs Intolerance? Histamine Reaction
gatita replied to Ashlynn6's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I seem to have both. My GI symptoms started with gluten intolerance, backed up by a high anti-gliadin iga test. Later, I did a one-time gluten challenge and had a severe histimine-type reaction in addition to the GI stuff. Scratch test confirmed it. So you can have both. -
ARCHIVED What Do You Want To Tell Your Friends And Family About Living Gluten Free?
gatita replied to LisaDances's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That is a great flyer. I'm going to send it to friends and family!!! -
Four to seven days, depending on the amount. When I did a mini-gluten challenge (small amount of pasta at one meal), it was more than a week.

ARCHIVED Fighting Off Sicknesses-Do You Have Trouble?
gatita replied to kristie28227's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wonder if this will keep happening until we get our B and D vitamins and other nutrients up to where they should be. I just had the flu and it has last more than two weeks. Never in my life has the flu lasted that long or been so bad! So I do think our immune systems take time to get back to normal. There has been some research showing celiacs are more... -

ARCHIVED Cmv Infection - Not Celiac
gatita replied to donwake's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Wow, you are the only other adult I have "met" who had CMV! I got it about ten years ago, in my 40s, and learned as you did that it's very rare in adults who are not immune-compromised. (Apparently most U.S. people get it without symptoms when they are little kids in preschool or kindergarten.) I too, was tested for everything under the sun (except...
