  1. Once I needed some cuts from the deli and the lady was just finishing up reloading the breaded chicken when she came over to help me. I asked her to please change her gloves in a rather apologetic way, and she apologized to me for not changing them as a matter of course. First time I had ever stood up for myself that way too. I was proud of me and I didn...
  2. I agree with Raven - since you felt better going gluten-free, then do so. Listen to your body. I was dx'd by diet challenge alone. My current gp knows I go to this site for info and support (lots of it here); I mentioned wishing I could get tested just to see what exactly I have, but he feels that the tests are far too unreliable to be considered accurate...
  3. Yeah, I agree with you on how celiac was presented. I was wishing House could have said something along the line of the patient's symptoms as being A-typical. But at least it was out there.
  4. I agree with Vydorscope. Go gluten-free, if you feel better, then you have a problem with gluten. Simple as that. Your body knows best, listen to it. Besides, the diet challenge is a valid dx tool. Keep us posted on your progress! Annette
  5. Have you completely eliminated gluten from your system? All meds, toiletries and such confirmed gluten-free? Once I got off of it, the only time I had problems was when I was cross contaminated. Did you eat out? Use a toaster, old pan, wooden spoons or something from your pre-gluten-free life? I hope you are better soon. Annette
  6. I think listen to your body!! It's telling you it doesn't like gluten- whether it's intolerence or celiac, the results are the same - the gluten-free diet. I was dx'd by diet alone, before all this testing became the norm, and believe it or not, some in the medical field are deciding that the tests are not reliable enough but the diet challenge is!! When...
  7. I watched it. Sort of disappointed, but at least the disease was on national TV!
  8. I agree with Karen. It sounds like celiac could be a culpret. There is a celiac blood panel that could be done, stomach biopsy to see what your intestines are like, but there is a high likelyhood of false negatives. So many posters here swear by Enterolab. Or try the gluten-free diet - that's how I was dx'd and some in the medical community are thinking...
  9. Corn tortillas are fine. Beware of burritos as they can have wheat flour as fillers. As always, read labels continually as manufacturers can and do change formulas at the drop of a hat. Annette
  10. I have bouts of insomnia at times. I use Sleepytime by Celestial seasonings. You can also try a couple of benadryls - they knock me out, easy on the tummy and gluten-free, inexpensive and non-habit forming. Cross-stitching works for me - the counting part. Read a book - I recommend any dealing with accounting or economics - sure sleep inducers! I really...
  11. Believe it or not, I agree with your dr, because that is the same approach my dr took with me lo, these many years ago. I prefer the noninvasive type medicine myself, and your little boy I'm sure wouldn't mind if he understood. What you might do is the enterolab to see what's going on and to do the gene test. It's something I hope to do in the future....
  12. Glad to hear of your progress. Have you tried simple Chamomile tea? I've also heard that blackberry juice helps, but I have no idea where to get that. And sometimes just a plain heating pad will do wonders. My zoloft reduction is off, then on. I don't know if I got glutened which caused my depression to come back full strength, or dealing with my mother...
  13. don't you get tired of them telling us what we can have or not when WE KNOW what's bad for us and what isn't? And implying we're crazy or at least hypochondriac when in fact it's their ignorance that can really hurt us! Hope you have a speedy recovery. Annette
  14. You are so right about the sanitary conditions (NOT) of paper makers and printer shops. My second ex used to work in a calendar/printer plant in upstate New York. I've seen it first hand also how much dust and dirt and grime was everywhere. I'll remember that next time I have to mail off something. Annette
  15. I sure hope you find the "official" answers you need - we all know what our bodies tell us is the most reliable, not the drs. Annette
  16. I personally believe that this is supposed to be a safe place to rant without judgemental responses. I hope I'm not wrong. Anyhow, good for you for going gluten-free w/o a "positive" dx of celiac. My current gp believes that the tests are not reliable enough to put one's complete faith in them. What you might want to do is the enterolab which will give...
  17. What kind of tests were done? And what was your diet in the 3 to 6 weeks leading up to the tests? Were you ingesting heavy amounts of gluten or were you "gluten lite" before the tests? Current thinking is that the tests are not as reliable as once thought. There is a very high incidence of false negatives with the current tests. You might want to try...
  18. Nini and Nikki are right. More up to date drs now don't think of the biopsy as the gold standard for celiac. It takes 10 or more samples (I forget what the current recommendation is exactly) plus a WELL TRAINED lab to read it accurately. Believe it or not, some drs are re-thinking tests and now think that the diet challenge is the best dx, which is how...
  19. You'd probably be safe with Kraft brand or really anything with the new labeling laws. I've never had a problem with them, although I don't eat them every day.
  20. I haven't run across any that do contain gluten. Wouldn't they be made of cherries, corn syrup and food coloring?
  21. I would trust them. The maltodextrin would be most likely made from corn unless otherwise stated, and the distilled white vinegar is safe, it is malt vinegar that is bad.
  22. I thought that the idea of the glue on the envelopes being bad for us was an outdated rumor. So it's really true? we shouldn't lick envelopes? Annette
  23. Oooh!!! My hubby (non-celiac disease) is also a classically trained sous chef (and me with gall bladder problems ) He's gotten really good at tweaking recipes to make them low fat for me, along with of course being gluten-free. Please post! This would be very interesting! Annette
  24. Patti is right - and you don't need a dr's permission to do the gluten-free diet. You could try it right now seeing as the biopsy has already been done. Even if the biopsy comes back neg, you could still very well have celiac disease. My current gp thinks that the tests aren't sensitive or accurate enough to totally rely on them, except of course when they...
