  1. My blood test showed positive for celiac. For the last 6 days, I've been gluten-free. I am training for a marathon and averaging 60-70 km/week + yoga and weight training (total of 10 hours of training/week). For months now, I've noticed what looks like blood in my stools. This doesn't happen all the time but these last few days (while being gluten-free) this is what I have noticed (dark spots in stool). Also, I've noticed blood on the toilet paper. Are these simply symptoms of celiac? Do I have reason to worry?

There could be many reasons to pass blood in the stool. I would discuss this with you doctor. I don't think that it would have anything to do with going gluten free.

  2. I know this is silly asking a qustion about pickels, but I went to the store today to buy some baby pickels, out of habit I started looking at the ingrediants, some jars had all these ingreadaints that It never occured to me just might have gluten in the juice. I don't have my list handy Modified food starch is bad right along with High Fructos corn suryp.. Just wondering

    donna

    Morning Donna,

It does seem logical that pickles and the juice would not be something that would contain gluten. Pickles may have been suspect in the past because of the distilled vinegar. We now know that the distilling process removes what gluten may have existed. (disclaimer, some sensitive celiacs may react to vinegars and alcohol).

Modified Food Starch, IN THE US, is generally derived from corn. If it is otherwise, it would be required by law to be listed as "Modified Food Starch (wheat)".

    Enjoy that pickle

High Fructose Corn should no be a gluten issue either.

  3. Hi,

I'm posting for the first time here and need some help.

I tested positive on one of the antibodies for celiac. My doctor told me I need to see a GI.

I was then told I need to get an EGD to know for sure if I have it. I haven't been able to get one done right away and in the meantime I have been on a gluten free diet for the past few weeks.

My question is would being on the gluten free diet negate the findings on an EGD?

Also, I have in the past reacted to anesthesia and am afraid of having another reaction. The sedation they told me they use is dipravan.

    I would appreciate your help.

    Welcome Jewelie:

You have found yourself in a great place to learn everything you need to learn.

If you had a positive blood test for Celiac - you have a conformation of a diagnosis.

A follow-up endoscopy could indicate the level of damage to your small intestin and look for some other issues such as a hernia or gastritis. But you have a confirmation through your bloodwork.

Many people here are satisfied with what you have already tested for and have begun the gluten free diet and never looked back. The choice is yours.

  4. Hey guys,

I had a severe bout of food poisoning (not gluten) on Sunday and ended up in the ER. Now my tummy is killing me, and my gastro appt isn't for a week. I was going to buy some prilosec oTC, but it's not on the gluten-free drug list on glutenfreedrugs.com and I cannot reach the company (no phone contact listed on their website and they haven't replied ot an email from days ago...). I am almost positive it is gluten-free, but dont want to take any more chances!

    Thanks

    Kathleen

Prilosec OTC is indeed gluten free. Hope you feel better

  5. What a treat for me!!! Getting to meet mouse, chris and tom was really cool. Lunch was to die for. Four gluten free pizzas were served that the three of us almost devoured. (what a good sport Tom was as he abstained - a will of steel)

As always in life, it was too short. But our visit was long enough to be reminded, what wonderful people there are on this forum. What a lucky one I am. ;)

  6. OK. I googled the other one. And I think that is a better choice for everyone. Chris will be closer to get to the game and I won't get lost. It is closer to Phoenix for Tom. It is also easy for you Lisa, as Scottsdale Rd. is the main road in Scottsdale. Your hotel will direct you.

The exact address is 8787 N. Scottsdale Road and the phone number is 480.596.8800. Just in case anyone gets lost.

See everyone on Sunday at 11:00.

Got it, see ya. Call me on my cell if anything changes. EXCITED. We need to make sure that Tom knows.

  7. p.s. Are we meeting at the one on Frank LLoyd Wright or the one on Scottdale Rd (There are 2 in Scottsdale)

    Thanks

    BB

GOOD QUESTION!!! I thought it is the one on the corner of Scottsdale and Frank Lloyd Wright.

Chris, the one I have listed is NORTH Scottsdale 7325 Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd. (on SouthWest corner of FLW Blvd and Scottsdale Road)

.........If other, please let me know :D

  8. Karen,

It is sooo great to hear from you. We sure do miss you.

It sounds like you finally have a doctor who knows that he/she is doing. I know that you have been waiting for some answers for a long long time.

I am going to look up Addisson's. But, I wanted to let you know that I think about you often and need you to get back into the swing as soon as you can. It's just not the same place around here without you. :(

    Hugs back

  9. i finally got referred to a gastroenterologist and saw his nurse practitioner last week. she scheduled me for a blood panel and upper endoscopy, neither of which i have done yet. i told her that i was worried about false negatives that may occur because of my 8 month gluten free diet. she said that i should not worry about this, and that it would show no matter if i was on a gluten free diet or not.

this goes against everything i have read and heard.. but is she right? should i go back on gluten before the testing? ask for a second opinion? i live in the panhandle of florida, and celiac's is not a well known disease, nor is there many gastorenterologists around here.

please- i do not want to have to repeat these tests. any help or advice is appreciated.

First, welcome to the forum. You have found yourself a wonderful place to be.

Eight months of a true gluten free diet could certainly be time to heal any markers that would indicate Celiac Disease with and endoscopy as well as a blood panel. Perhaps at this point, you might want to pursue other avenues of testing.

  10. I think MommaGoose is the anti Enterolab police of this forum - heaven forbid that anyone that does not have an actual positive biopsy think they might have celiac. We must just be a bunch of Enterolab diagnosed hypochondriacs. well maybe except for my one friend that is double DQ1 & positive biopsy & then positive thru Enterolab for gluten and dairy. Oh NO, wait, although she has a positive biopsy it must be only gluten intolerance because she does not have DQ2 or DQ8, okay maybe it is just in her head too...

But what I really think is that anyone smart enough to quit eating gluten before the villi are damaged should not care what anyone says that had to wait to get a positive biobsy before listening to what their body was telling them & then to down play the suffering of others.

I believe the statement in question was regarding Enterolabs DIAGNOSING for Celiac Disease. It is my understanding, as I have stated in the past, that Enterolabs does not and cannot diagnose for Celiac Disease. They can, however, test for sensitivities to certain foods.

If I am incorrect, please feel free to correct me. If I am wrong, I will sincerely apologize. Accuracy on this forum is very important to me, as is to the people who depend on it.

I was diagnosed through a biopsy and then found out what Celiac Disease was. I had no idea what was wrong with me other than the fact that I thought I was dying. In my time here on this forum I have never been critical of those who chose a different road. We all endure the same voyage.

Apparently, I hit a sensitive note.
