Thanks for listening.

Nice to meet another person from NC. I just moved here [Wilmington] from VA.
It does seem to be the diagnosis made when your doctors have ruled out everything. But honestly, my doctors haven't ruled out everything unless they do the tests for celiac, crohns, and ulcerative colitis, along with maybe other food allergies.
My symptoms now tend to be more severe after I eat. Sometimes I can eat a meal and be just a little nauseated, sometimes I'll have to run to the bathroom because of diarrhea. Then there are the really bad times...the other night I had eaten dinner and I was extremely sick afterwards, on the verge of passing out, not coherent, very weak, sharp pains in my abdomen/bowels. I realized that I'm alternating between diarrhea and constipation right now. My average day, I'm nauseated most of the time in varying degrees and I am constantly weak. Sometimes there's diarrhea, sometimes not. But I do have bad episodes after I eat, definitely.
But the thing is, it seems like it's no matter what I eat. I even tried eating gluten free chips for the first time last night, and for some reason, it still made me feel sick. I don't know if it's just the damage already done to my bowels that would make me sick, and that after a while of eating gluten-free food it would go away.
Yup, there is a process here. First you have to find out what is causing your symptoms, whether it be Celiac, Chrohns or other. Test should be done to rule out other issues as you stated. You can ask you doctor to do a full blood panel for Celiac, although, it can rule it in, but is cannot rule it out. The same for the endoscopy and biopsy.
Many here on this site have been self-diagnosed and feel very comfortable with that. A positive dietary response was all they needed to know to realize what was causing them discomfort/pain. Many of their symptoms and issues have resolved being gluten free.
When I was at my sickest, I had no knowledge of what Celiac was. I was housebound for two months and finally I was diagnosed with an endoscopy with total lack of villi. Everything that I ate passed through in about 20 minutes - in tacked. (sorry for the detail, but sometimes it helps people to relate).
If you should pursue further testing, I would recommend that you continue eating gluten. That will help to insure a more accurate test.
If you should go this way and gluten is your issue, I can assure you that you life is not over, it can be a beginning.

My gastroenterologist is pretty quick to jump at the IBS diagnosis without using the Rome II diagnosis [ruling out celiac disease, ulcerative colitis, and chrohns], which is really the only way you can diagnose IBS, from what I've read.
I wanted to know if there were any important differences between IBS and Celiac? I know the wheat intolorance is a big issue, but right now, gluten or not it seems, I feel sick. Is this because of bowel damage that has already been done? Also, has anyone else been given the IBS diagnosis or found out later it was celiac?
Oh my, "has anyone else been give the IBS diagnosis and found out it was Celiac", yes maam (assuming gender), way toooo many of us. We jest here about IBS stands for "I be stumped". It is not a true diagnosis, just a general term used, where other causes are not evident.
Junky, list some of you symptoms and perhaps some of us can help you connect the dots.
BTW, I too am in NC.

Steve,
There is a great weight-loss thread going on here. You might want to join, or atleast peep in and see if it's something that can work for you.

Is there a difference between Celiac Sprue and Celiac? I didn't think that there were.....confussed.
One in the same.

Most bacons are gluten free. I buy exclusively Oscar Meyer.

celiac3270, oh, he is a great young man, and wise beyond his years. Bend and ear to his advise.

Don't know about that one, but many corn meals have flour added. We live in a small town and I have several to select from that is 100% corn meal with some enrichment added. I cut the lable off when I put it into a container, but I think it may be Bennetts?

I am looking to find out if one of the foods to avoid for children with ADD is wheat or gluten? I thought I heard that avoiding wheat and/or gluten helps ADD? Did I hear correctly?
Ded,
There is information here on the Site Index - Several articles about ADD. Just schroll down.

Judy, I don't recall the thread. I should think that any clear liquids would be fine.

Happy Birthday to you both, my friends. I hope you have a wonderful day.!

Thank you Momma Goose.
I have been told by Dr's for past 5 years that I have anxiety and I know that is not the answer. I do think that I have had Celiac for many many years and no one has even given it i thought that it could be Celiac until my gastroenterologist did the test and it came back positive. I have also had chronic hives for years (34) and I think this has something to do with celiac also. Don't know how much damage has been done but hope some of it can be repaired or stopped from progressing. Had all of the neuro. testing including a brain scan and all os ok. I do get buzzing numbness in my legs and feet and also have a vibrating feeling in my chest. Feel it mostly when I am very quiet at night in bed. Had all cardio testing done also and everything is fine except for a slight leaking tri-cuspid valve which they say is not the cause of the problems.
Hope to hear from anyone else that has neuro symptoms. Live alone and it scarey. Today I am getting rid of everything in the house that has wheat and gluten in it.
Nan
Nan,
I am sure it can be scary when you're alone.
I have recently developed some slight numbness from my shins down and some tingling sensations in my thighs. And on a few rare occasions that sharp jab in some of my joints. My left entire arm shakes, sometimes worse than others. Not quite sure what it's about yet, but I will be checking with my doctor in a few weeks.
How long have you been gluten free, that could be significant?
-
Yes, there are many of us. The weekends are generally slow around here. I am sure that others will post soon.
I had balance issues, speech issues and the fog is not totally lifted. Much has subsided since being gluten free for two years. Some issues I have yet to resolve.

I would like to remind everyone that the Board Rules and Guidelines need to be followed, to include being respectful and non judgemental while posting.

To all those that are confused about Lame Advertisement - it is a glitch in the system on site. Sometimes you need to post the name of a product with spaces and it will show up with accurately. I am sure that it has cause for confusion.
It is not a reflection on the product.

I know there is a thread on tapioca intolerance. This is my new intolerance. I am curious as to why we seem to get new food intolerances. It's very annoying because we are already inconvenienced enough having to eat gluten-free. Not that I should be complaining since I feel great. But I just want to know why these things keep happening to us.
I don't know, other than maybe the protiens in these substances may be similar and our system responds to them as aliens. You will have to wait for a better answer.

Hi everyone,
I've been gluten-free for about 3 days and I was just wondering if it gets worse before it gets better. I've had more stomach pain these few days and have been a little more nauseous than usual...definitely more tired although that may have to do with something else, who knows.
Thanks guys. Hope you're all doing great.
That is a difficult question to answer. Three days is a very short time to see improvements. It took me several months before I felt that I could safely venture out about town, and I live in a very small town. I don't recall you mode of diagnosis, but it took some time for most damage to occure and it will equally take time for healing to begin.
During this time, make sure that you are checking your toiletries as in cosmetics, shampoos, lipstick or lip balm. Gluten can hide everywhere from your Teflon pans, wooden spoons, old toasters, previously used bread machines, pots and pans not thoroughly cleaned, medications, vitamins.
Stick to a simple diet of meats, fish, fresh veggies, fruits, rice and potatos and processed foods until you have the ability to read labels.
This too will pass with dilegence and you will find yourself on the road to recovery. I do hope you feel better soon. I DO remember.

Personally, I would not risk it.

I have cut out most breads and stuff right now, but I am really craving a corn-dog of all things. Can anyone help with a receipe? Thanks so much!
Find Gulia - she tortures us with her avatar pictures of the goodies she cooks./bakes... She'll know!

I do not eat breakfast cereal, so I am not up on what is gluten free or not. But, I have never heard of TRIX mentioned on this site before. For that reason alone, I feel skeptical. Perhaps, I am wrong.
and I truely hope so. Just a gut feeling.
It would be wonderful to have a new breakfast product.

I don't think that I have welcomed you yet...so welcome.
To you questions:
I keep some cooked brown rice or wild rice in my fridge most of the time. Summer is here and there are alot of fiber rich veggies out there such as broccoli, corn, beets, carrotts, butter beans (lima's for those up north
) and fresh salads and fruits. Some here make some good smoothies.
For lunch, I often have cut up carrots and dip into the peanut butter jar - well really I get the individual Jiff containers. I have applesauce.
Vann's gluten free waffles are good with a fried egg, or jelly. Grits (ok, another southern thing), of left-overs are my favorites. I sometimes have a micro sweet potato in the am - quick and good and high in good stuff.
Perhaps as start.

With a positive blood panel for Celiac - You do have Celiac. And endoscopy and biopsy's can be hit and miss as Jess said.
Positive blood work can rule Celiac in, negative blood work cannot rule Celiac out, as in the same for a biopsy. (Make sense?)
In addition to a strong family connection, you are diagnosed.
Stay on the diet and be as careful as you can. It may take some time to feel better. Healing can be a slow process. Make sure to check your cosmetics, shampoos and learn to read labels...it gets easier.
I am sure that you will feel better soon.

No problem, distilled vinegar is not an issue (except for a very few). Malt vinegar, yes, is an issue for cekiac.
If you have been on the diet for a short time, it may take some time to heal. I does not happen overnight. It took me many months.
