ARCHIVED Celiac Panel!
taweavmo3 replied to ShayBraMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have to agree with what the other poster said about the school.....only the parent can dictate what a child eats at school. In fact, my children's school (public elementary) has clearly stated that they are actually forbidden to influence what a student eats in any way. Some of their funding will get pulled if they tell a child what they can or can not... -
ARCHIVED Both Kids Negative
taweavmo3 replied to Luisa2552's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think behavior problems are very common among Celiac or those that are intolerant to gluten. Personally, I shock myself at how mean I can get if I've been glutened, and my son is the same way. I can tell within the hour if he's had a gluten accident. He's only 8, but he gets extremely emotional and will start bawling for no apparent reason. Then he... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Test
taweavmo3 replied to Molly's mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Poor thing! We had the same problem when I tried to have my 3 year old tested a while back...they needed more blood. I always figured the lab just screwed up and needed another sample. I never went back, I just put him on the diet and that was that. I don't really have any suggestions as far as how to minimize the gluten reaction......if I remember... -
ARCHIVED Bloated Stomach...still?
taweavmo3 replied to Bellasmama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Ditto about dairy.........that would be my guess too. I have found that with myself, and my kids....we really didn't start making great strides until all casein was removed. Feeling and looking bloated is one of my main symptoms of a dairy infraction. Hope that helps! If you are already dairy free, I would go over everything she's been eating. Also... -
ARCHIVED Could She Still Be Celiac?
taweavmo3 replied to sdw6705's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You have nothing to lose at this point to go ahead with the diet. There are alot of calorie rich foods you can give to your daughter in order to get her to gain weight.....but I would venture to guess that once you try the diet with her, she will start gaining. My 12 month old is gluten/dairy free like my other kids, so I have to add a few extra calories... -
ARCHIVED Pros And Cons Of Testing
taweavmo3 replied to devell's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have four children, one who is formally diagnosed, and three who are on the diet w/out a positive test. The biggest challenge was putting my 8 year old on the diet without a positive test. He had eaten gluten, and was not keen on giving it up. He agreed to give the gluten free diet over summer, and he realized he felt better. He did cheat a few times... -
I have a question regarding a 504 as well.......my daughter already has an IEP, and is in special ed for speech. Do I still need to request a 504 plan, or can I just address these issues at the next ARD meeting? This stuff is SO confusing it makes my head spin sometimes. She is just starting kindergarten this year (tomorrow actually, sniff sniff),...

ARCHIVED Bento Box Saves School Lunch! Onigiri Rocks!
taweavmo3 replied to zarfkitty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think the Laptop Lunches are perfect for a five year old!!!! We've only had ours for a couple of weeks now, but they are GREAT! It is really fun to pack the kids' lunches now, I've been able to pack a variety of food, and you really get into how the lunch "looks". Yesterday, we were out running errands during lunch, so the kids ate in the car. It... -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Tested Negative But Has Every Symptom?
taweavmo3 replied to jacqui's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would try the diet 100%, you have nothing to lose but everything to gain. I have one biopsy diagnosed daughter, but my two boys tested negative. They both had nasty eczema (my older son's eczema turned into psoriasis) as well as stool issues. They both have improved with the diet, and my 8 year old now refuses any gluten since realizing how sick it... -
ARCHIVED Why Is The Biopsy Necessary?
taweavmo3 replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Once there is a definitive diagnosis, there really isn't much left to treat (in our case anyway). After my daughter's diagnosis, we had a checkup 6 months later with one follow up blood test to see if we were sticking to the diet. After that, we had one more checkup that lasted all of about 1 minute, and now 2 years after diagnosis, our Pedi GI said we... -
ARCHIVED Where To Find "the Trouble That Jack Has"?
taweavmo3 replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I tried to search for it as well, but turned up nothing. It would be perfect for my son, his name is Jack, so he'd get a kick out of that. -
ARCHIVED Poll: Are You Proud Of....
taweavmo3 replied to LoveBeingATwin's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm still struggling with what I want to be when I grow up, lol. I've been a respiratory therapist, mostly pediatric, for 7 years. I like working with children, but the 12 hour shifts and back breaking CPT are starting to wear on me. I've been looking into the local dietetics program.....I have most of the prereq's, and from what I hear, there's a need... -
ARCHIVED Bento Box Saves School Lunch! Onigiri Rocks!
taweavmo3 replied to zarfkitty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I finally got to try out the Laptop Lunchboxes for the kids....they are a BIG hit. We went to the zoo and the museum this weekend, I was able to cram alot of food in, and we had some leftover for the car ride home. The only thing I need to work on is my Onigiri. I really spent alot of time on them, my daughter's are heart shaped, and one letter "E". The... -
ARCHIVED Arrowhead Mills....any Cc Issues?
taweavmo3 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've been using the Arrowhead Mills buckwheat flour in my pancakes for the past month.....I have felt a bit nauseus and light headed after eating these, this morning was pretty bad. That is the only new ingredient I've used in my pancakes, the other flour I use with the buckwheat is BH Featherlite mix. Just curious if it could possibly the AM buckwheat... -
ARCHIVED Fast Food French Fries...is Anywhere Safe?
taweavmo3 replied to taweavmo3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Someone posted on the gluten-free/cf yahoo group that Chick Fil A actually bread their own products in the store. Has anyone else heard this before?? That would definately explain why my kids seem to react, if there is flour floating around in the air. I spoke with the manager at our local store, and he never mentioned this little tidbit, lol. -
ARCHIVED Bento Box Saves School Lunch! Onigiri Rocks!
taweavmo3 replied to zarfkitty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
YAY....just got my laptop lunches today! These lunchboxes have magical powers....I swear, my 8 year old immediately went into the kitchen and already has his lunch packed for the zoo tomorrow (perfect timing eh?) The only hiccup is that from the picture, I thought the "whimsical" lunchbox was blue, but it's actually purple. My son still thought it was... -
ARCHIVED Bento Box Saves School Lunch! Onigiri Rocks!
taweavmo3 replied to zarfkitty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am dying to try onigiri......but one quick question! Does the rice stay soft after it's been chilled, or is it a crunchy texture? And does it stay put together pretty well? I think I'm going to try the tuna salad one first...I have about 100 cookie cutters, so I could do all sorts of fun stuff. Love the cow one in your piccie, that is adorable. Thanks... -
ARCHIVED We Saw The Pedi Gi Today...need Opinions...
taweavmo3 replied to Momof2cuties's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You know, I work in the healthcare field, and on a daily basis I find it harder and harder to continue what I do. I know there are some great doctors out there, but sometimes you really have to search high and low for them. The blood tests for children, especially as young as your daughter, are extremely innacurate. Truth is that testing for Celiac... -

ARCHIVED Bento Box Saves School Lunch! Onigiri Rocks!
taweavmo3 replied to zarfkitty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Allright, I ordered three...one pink (my little girl is going to flip over a totally pink lunch box) and two whimsical. I got the whole bit, carrying case and all. It was over $100...EEEK. Hubby is going to think I'm nuts for spending so much on lunch boxes, lol. But I think it will actually save us money in the long run...I can get a little more creative... -
ARCHIVED What's The Best gluten-free "oreo"?
taweavmo3 replied to buffettbride's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Can there be a triple ditto??? Lol. Kinitoos rock...they are awesome. I've tried some of the others, and they didn't even come close to Kinnikinnick. I love that company! -
ARCHIVED Bento Box Saves School Lunch! Onigiri Rocks!
taweavmo3 replied to zarfkitty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Okay, quick question for you laptop lunch users! Are the carrying cases really necessary for kids, you think? I'm ordering three...and if I just get the laptop lunch, w/out the case, they are only $18 a piece. But with the carrying case and water bottle, it's $30 a piece. I'm just wondering if the boxes by themselves will be sturdy enough to be thrown... -
ARCHIVED Play Areas
taweavmo3 replied to momof2sn's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Well, we went to Chuck E. Cheese on Saturday to meet some family. My little girl, the most sensitive Celiac, still ended up getting sick despite hand washing. I probably should have washed her hands several times while we were there, but I only washed them when we were heading home. The next day she had a stomache and her head hurt. I knew it was risky... -
ARCHIVED Bento Box Saves School Lunch! Onigiri Rocks!
taweavmo3 replied to zarfkitty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This is PERFECT......okay, forgive my complete ignorance (can I blame it on lack of sleep since my 1 year old started waking up twice in the middle of the night???Lol) but is Bento the style of lunch, and the containers you have it in is the Laptop Lunch boxes??? Is that right? I was actually going to order three laptop lunches for my kids today, and... -
ARCHIVED Need Snack/meal Ideas For gluten-free/cf Diet
taweavmo3 replied to Momof2cuties's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I agree, lunch is definately the hardest for me too. During the school year, the kids are happy with sandwhiches five days a week. I've tried putting variety in their school lunch, but it was always a flop. They just want sandwhiches! I'm going to have to come up with something else when child #3 enters school.....I will end up going through one loaf...
