  1. Sorry you are having such a rough time! I agree with what everyone else said, if you keep hitting brick walls, just try the diet and see if it helps. I have four kids who are gluten free, but only one with a positive diagnosis. I had to go to several doctors before I found one who would test her....had I known more back then, I would not have waited so...
  2. Is it possible she could have been glutened somehow? My 8 year old gets extremely moody and emotional if he's had gluten, even a small amount. The smallest thing will set him into a crying spell. If that's not it, it could possibly be hormonal changes/puberty approaching. It seems to start so much earlier with girls these days. Good luck, having an emotional...
  3. Well, we are in a similar situation. My daughter is 5, and she is below the 2nd percentile for height. She is 38 inches tall, she is tiny. She's been gluten free for 2 years, and initially she grew quite well, but things have slowed down. We've had her blood levels checked again, and that was fine. We are now doing a complete blood workup to check...
  4. Good luck with what you decide! It is hard for kids, but it can be a good thing as well. This is what has worked for me (so far anwyay, lol) in getting my 8 year old to stay gluten free. He never tested positive, but I see major behavioral changes when he eats gluten. He has also has had psoriasis on his knees and elbows since he was four years old, so...
  5. Everyone gave you great advice already! The only part I have to add is that I think there is always going to be someone who thinks you are going overboard, unless they actually see the aftermath of a glutening. Most of my husbands family does not understand, and they think I'm paranoid about it. At a birthday party, my sister in law asked if Emmie could...
  6. I've been wondering the same thing. My daughter is being evaled for autism next month. I happened to find a SCD website, and it really sparked an interest. But I'm hoping to find out more before I get the book. The idea of putting dd on an even more restricitve diet is daunting, but if it will help her, it will be well worth it. She did great initially...
  7. I have a 7 month old too...and Celiac in our family. I have tried rice cereal for Lucy, but she did not tolerate it at all. It made her very constipated and cranky. I have decided to skip cereal all together, and I'm just giving her veggies and fruits. Avacados are a great first food! We are also doing bananas, applesauce, sweet potatoes and carrots...
  8. Everyone has given you great advice.....I just wanted to add one thing. I know you have oodles on your plate already, but one thing stood out to me. You mentioned that she has had two UTI's, and I was just curious if they've ever done a VCUG to rule out any urinary tract defects or reflux. My dd (with Celiac) also has a double ureter and uretal reflux...
  9. Yeah, I'd be a little confused too! Just curious why the ped wanted your daughter to see a Pedi Endo?? Honestly, it's hard enough to find a pediatric GI who is well informed regarding Celiac, so I would take an Endo's advice in this matter with a grain of salt. I also agree that asking you to keep your child on gluten for six more months and see a nutritionist...
  10. I'm in the same boat....I was hoping to hang on to some of my baby weight from my last baby, but it came right off, and then some. I know I'm lucky in that regard, but I am way too skinny and would love to gain at least 10 pounds. My husband jokes about how bony I am. I too get full pretty quick, and I don't get as hungry as I used to. I'm doing the...
  11. I have to agree about Redbridge....good stuff. I'm not incredibly picky about beer, I was just happy to have something else to drink since I can't tolerate wine. But my husband is picky, and even he thought it was pretty good. What's even better, is that I can buy it at Walmart!
  12. We've been doing gluten free for two years...so now I'm taking it a step further and trying to eliminate all processed food, and add more whole grains into our diet. White rice is a big part of our diet...both in the meals I make, and alot of the gluten free mixes that I use. I know it doesn't have any nutritional value, so I'm trying to change that. I...
  13. My experience has been that a doctor will not recommend the diet until there is a positive blood test. Even when I explained to our pediatrician how much better my 2 year old was doing on the diet (blood test was -) he said it was simply a coincidence, even with the strong family history. Unfortunately, I know the feeling all too well of leaving a doctors...
  14. As far as hidden gluten.....some potato chips do have gluten in them. We eat Lays Stax, they say gluten free right on the container. As far as anything else questionable, you really just have to call each and every company to get a confirmation. I was on the phone ALOT at first until I learned what was safe. Kraft is a company that will list any hidden...
  15. The others have all given you great ideas so far! I have a 7 year old that went gluten free this year, and I'm certain he would cheat if we had gluten filled treats where he could find them, lol. He understands he feels better without gluten, but he doesn't get as sick as my daughter does, so it's harder for him to be compliant. I keep gluten free candy...
  16. In the first few months my dd was on the diet, she didn't react right away either. I think in our case, it depended on the fact that my dd's Ttg levels were so high. I believe it took a while before gluten was actually out of her system......Now, two years later, she reacts severely to a gluten accident. But once it is in her system, she will not react...
  17. Okay, I've been cooking gluten free for almost two years now....and I'm feeling brave enough to try my hand at baking again! My first attempts in the beginning were disastrous, and I have used pre packaged mixes ever since. SO, I got a Bette Hagman cookbook, and tried the Biscuit Mix. First of all, I was expecting it to be more the consistancy of Bisquick...
  18. Take the Cake flavor is delicious!!!!! It is awesome, we are on our second tub this week, lol.
  19. I have a very basic rice cooker....with only two settings, cook and warm. I use broth instead of water, and I add the butter after it's already cooked. The only problem I have is that if I let it sit on the warm setting for a while after it's cooked, it forms a brown film on the bottom. I try to mix it up right after it's cooked, that's when I add the butter...
  20. I would trust your instincts...if you are seeing results on the diet, I think that's proof enough. I have one daughter who tested positive for celiac, but before we got a positive test, she was so very sick. She was 3 years old, and weighed 20lbs. I just couldn't wait for my other kids to get to that point. If my dd hadn't been so sick, with developmental...
  21. Like everyone else has said....as long as your kids are thriving and healthy, I really wouldn't worry. Easier said than done, I know. That being said, my dd is still having some ongoing issues. I know she's 100% gluten free, so that part is taken care of. She's been on the diet for two years, but is still barely on the growth charts, gets fatigued...
  22. We eat the Lundberg rice cakes, they are gluten free. The buttery caramel flavor is very good.
  23. Wow, you all eat pretty healthy. With a house full of kids, we eat more junk! Here's our day: Breakfast: Pamela's pancakes, turkey bacon Snack: usually apples with peanut butter/honey...or yogurt Lunch: today....stir fry with egg, veggies, chicken and rice, splashed with walmart brand soy sauce yesterday.....corn tortillas with hummus...
  24. That's great your mom got tested.....kind of bittersweet that she is positive though. At least now she can take control of her health and prevent any further complications. I wish my family would get tested, but no one will. Even my brother who has been really sick since he was a child refuses to believe he may have it. It's driven us apart somewhat...
  25. It is really overwhelming in the beginning.....but in a few months time, you will be a pro too. This site is amazing, and speeds up the learning curve a great deal! I had several breakdowns in the beginning, but with the help of everyone here, the diet just became a way of life that we didn't even have to think about anymore. Here's a few tips I have...
