ARCHIVED Fast Food French Fries...is Anywhere Safe?
taweavmo3 posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The only place I've let my kids have french fries is Chick fil a, but they seem to still react. This was the one place I thought was safe after talking to the manager. I know cc is always a risk, so maybe they are just really sensitive. I did also just read that they could have soybean oil, so it could be that. I don't know, but I guess our fast food... -
ARCHIVED Still Trying To Determine If 2yr Old Has Celiac Disease?
taweavmo3 replied to sadiesmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Well, by the book.....just going on the diet a "little bit" should not make a difference. BUT, when we were trying to figure out what was going on with my daughter, we did a gluten lite trial for two weeks. I really didn't know what I was doing, I didn't do the homework to find out what gluten was in. We fed her alot of rice, but she was still getting... -
ARCHIVED Need Snack/meal Ideas For gluten-free/cf Diet
taweavmo3 replied to Momof2cuties's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I wouldn't put alot of stock in the nutritionist....most do not have a clue about what is allowed on gluten/casein free diet and give innacurate information. There are some that are educated about Celiac, but it is not the norm. This board is one of the best out there to become informed, it saved me SO much time in learning the ins and outs of this diet... -
ARCHIVED My Son
taweavmo3 replied to binky1246's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It might be dairy.....my dd never showed any signs of being intolerant to dairy until she went gluten free. It took a good six months before she could tolerate any dairy at all. I ended up taking it out of her diet again a few months ago, but it was b/c she was getting moody/agitated again.....casein doesn't make her physically sick like it used too... -
ARCHIVED Need Help On 2 Problems
taweavmo3 replied to Jodele's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I know it can be really hard to figure these things out! The way you described her stools sounds to me like gluten may be sneaking in somewhere. First, I would start going through everything, including hair and body products, and double check that it's gluten free. This is where I start when dd's stools are questionable, or if she gets really moody. If... -
ARCHIVED Going Crazy
taweavmo3 replied to natalie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think the way they acted was ridiculous........you went out of your way to do something nice, and that should have been plenty! Geez, in my family, I'm just happy if someone remembers my birthday! -
ARCHIVED New Here...waiting For Results And ?
taweavmo3 replied to Momof2cuties's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Daniebella..there is no danger in going gluten free while breastfeeding. I have four kids who are gluten/casein free (and two who are soy free as well), and my youngest has been on the diet since birth! I won't give her gluten or dairy until at least her first birthday, after her immune system is developed, but I'll probably wait much longer than that.... -
ARCHIVED Your Child Menu?

What are Otterpops? I saw these on a couple of lists, so now I'm curious! -
ARCHIVED Your Child Menu?
taweavmo3 replied to Bellasmama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I love to see what everyone else is eating! Here are a few of our staples (gluten-free/CF and soy free) Fruit A Bu rice cakes popcorn apples with peanut butter and honey or agave nectar bananas with chocolate syrup and whipped cream from coconut milk (got that idea here, kids LOVE it!) squeezable applesauce dried fruit and nuts corn chips or carrots... -
A bakery would be good.....I think there is always room for more, and it would be great to have more choices. Funny you mentioned this, b/c my dh and I have talked about starting something up also. I don't think I would ever actually do it though, I can't even manage my laundry pile these days, let alone start my own business. But our idea was to package...

ARCHIVED How Do You Handle Birthday Parties?
taweavmo3 replied to johalex's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Well, every party we've been to has had pizza and cake. My 8 year old is casein free as well, so I just send him with a bag of hot wings and his own cupcake. I usually stay at the party so I can give him his food when it's time to eat. The other kids do not even notice, and the parents hardly even notice b/c it's so chaotic. One thing I have foud hilarious... -
ARCHIVED How To Deal With Preschool?
taweavmo3 replied to janelyb's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Can you just refuse to let them provide any food for your son? You don't have to agree to the IEP, at least that's how it is here in Texas. If you do refuse to sign, it goes a step further into mediation or something like that......which schools really like to avoid. So I don't know why they'd waste their time and money when the easiest solution is to... -
ARCHIVED Any Kids With Yeast Issues Also?
taweavmo3 replied to Nathan's mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
YES! I believe my daughter has yeast issues. She is gluten-free/cf too, but is still having some issues. She may have other food intolerances that I don't know about yet, and I'm pretty sure yeast is a problem too. She is on a daily antibiotic for recurring UTI's, but even before then she always had yeast rashes as a baby. And now, even though she is... -
ARCHIVED Daughter Is Sick 2nd Time In 2 Weeks
taweavmo3 replied to little d's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That is a tough one.....but just like Nicole said, sometimes it has to be done. I have a 5 year old who is also extremely afraid of needles and such. We have just recently had to do more tests b/c she is getting sick again. A couple of months ago, we had a whole slew of blood tests. All normal, except she's anemic. Then I had to bring her to the GI doc... -
ARCHIVED Need Ideas!
taweavmo3 replied to ptkds's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
How old is she? I have three kids who are gluten/casein free.....ages 5,3 and 10 months. Lunch and snacks are the biggest challenges for us, I definately have to get creative sometimes! We do alot of peanut butter b/c it's filling and has alot of protein. We also do alot of fruit, usually apples w/peanut butter and honey. Here are a few other ideas... -
ARCHIVED Vomitting With Gluten Ingestion?
taweavmo3 replied to kriswill's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter is the same way. Last time she had a big gluten accident, poor bug was vomiting for about three hours. Oddly enough, she doesn't get diarrhea afterward, just the profuse vomiting. She'll also run a high fever the next day, it's gone as high as 104. But if it's a small accident, she'll just get cranky and tired. -
ARCHIVED Found New gluten-free Product!
taweavmo3 replied to ptkds's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am using these for my daughter's teething cracker, she's 9 months old. These are similar to zweiback toast, but gluten free.....and they have been a hit with the older kids too. And if I remember right, they weren't very expensive either (otherwise I never would have bought them). Isn't it great when you find a product like this? I'm sure I get some... -
ARCHIVED Is It Celiac? Please Help
taweavmo3 replied to justkaty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Regarding size of children......after the first year, if a child is consistantly small on the growth chart, that very well may just be genetics. However, a pattern of falling back on the growth chart is a red flag and the primary reason for charting growth and weight in the first place. This is not a matter of just having a small child, we heard the... -
ARCHIVED Help.. Baking Question!
taweavmo3 replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I've tried a few recipes from Arrowhead Mills, didn't care for them much. I bought the baking mix too, ended up throwing most of it out. I have a great cookbook, it's called "Life Tastes Good Again" by Kirsti Kirkland and Betsy Thomas (who I think visits this site??). All of their breads and cookies have been fabulous. They have a mock oatmeal cookie... -
ARCHIVED New To Celiac Disease?
taweavmo3 replied to momof2sn's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I guess what confuses me is that they are calling her biopsy normal, yet there was blunting of the villi? (the fingerlike projections). Are they calling it normal simply b/c the damage was not in the small intestine yet? I would start reading all you can about Celiac, become informed, and then ask more questions. Then you can make your decision from there... -
ARCHIVED New To Celiac Disease?
taweavmo3 replied to momof2sn's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think one of the hardest things about Celiac is that no two Celiac kids are alike. There are SO many different symptoms. My daughter never had vomiting or diarrhea. Now that she has been gluten free for over two years, she does vomit when she's had a gluten accident, and get very very sick. Her only symptoms starting at 18 months old, were failure to... -
ARCHIVED New To Celiac Disease?
taweavmo3 replied to momof2sn's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
So basically, they want to wait until she gets sick enough for the test to be positive??? From what you described, it already sounds like she has Celiac. If she has flattened or blunted villi, I thought that was a positive test. Either way, my advice to you would be to start her on the diet now. She has the genetic makeup, she has flattened villi that... -
ARCHIVED Feeling Scared, Guilty, Overwhelmed
taweavmo3 replied to anemic's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Liz, you sound alot like us! I have four kids, and although a bit younger.....my 8 year old made the choice himself to stay gluten free. His test was negative too, but he realized on his own that he felt bad when he ate gluten. I've been really amazed at how well he has stuck to the diet, even when it isn't convenient to do so. Jack does have his moments... -
ARCHIVED New To Celiac
taweavmo3 replied to ckmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Just wanted to say welcome, this is a great place to be. I could not have survived without the great people on this board. I totally understand where you are coming from, and it will get easier with time. My kids are great eaters now, and half the time, my son's classmates want his gluten free treat instead of the cupcakes or whatever else they are eating... -
ARCHIVED Where To Begin?
taweavmo3 replied to TJShannon's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I second the fact that kids adjust pretty easily...much better than adults I think. Kids are so resilient, it's amazing. It's easier the younger they are, but it can still be done. I have an eight year old son who just went gluten free this year, and although it was hard at first, he has no problem sticking to it now. I have found that giving him control...
