ARCHIVED Enterolab Results Are In!
Nancym replied to dally099's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
No, it just means that people who have celiacs have one or the other gene, usually. However lots of people without celiac also have the gene. That is if you define celiac as villious atrophy, which is how the medicos currently define it. I think there are more shades of gray though. Certainly if the diet helps, you've got something going on. -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Results Are In!
Nancym replied to dally099's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
0302 is DQ2, I have that one. Did the nurse say anything about IgA insufficency? Sometimes people test negative because their body doesn't produce enough IgA. I think there's a blood test that determines whether you do or not. -
ARCHIVED Employer Doesn't Get It
Nancym replied to DesertRatCeliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, I sympathize! There's so much ignorance out there and even though the information is being presented it takes forever to penetrate the collective consciousness of humans. One thing though, can you bring/buy your own food when you go traveling? Do you stay in a hotel? Or is it that you're getting tired because your health isn't quite up to snuff... -
ARCHIVED Do You Guys Ever Feel Drugged After Eating?
Nancym replied to Woolygimp's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
IMHO craving carbs means you're eating too many of them. It happens when you eat a carby meal, your blood sugar raises up high, you release a lot of insulin to handle it, that quick drop in blood sugar starts off more hunger and desire for more carbs. I suppose it is useful for when you're packing away calories during the gathering season as a hunter/gatherer... -
Dang, that's quite a high, high heel! I hope you're feeling better now. You're going to need a lot of physical prowess to walk on those heels!

ARCHIVED Constant Hunger How Can I Deal With This?
Nancym replied to Electra's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Protein and fat are far more sustaining than anything else. The weird taste in your mouth is from ketosis which happens when you are metabolising fat versus glucose. Happens to people on low calorie diets or low carb diets. Keep the veggies, cut back on the fruits and add some protein and fat. You're cold because being extremely low calorie will... -
It could be worse, you could have MY family. They think I'm nuts with the seeing Celiac all over their various illnesses.

ARCHIVED Could There Ever Be A "safe" Wheat For Celiacs?
Nancym replied to chrissy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It'll take a lot more tinkering with the genetics to make it un-antigenic again. If early humans didn't find the more modern varients its probably quite likely we'd all still be hunter/gatherers. Those early grains didn't have much going for them. -

ARCHIVED Just When I Thought I'd Figured It All Out
Nancym replied to hathor's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have got to question the logic of this. Wheat flour, in particular gluten, is EXTREMELY sticky stuff if it comes into contact with water or moisture. And even "dried fruit" is pretty moist. Using it to prevent sticking would be like using glue to prevent sticking. I'd suspect they'd use some sort of starch like corn starch to prevent sticking, like... -
ARCHIVED Reviewing Celiac In The Family And Need Advice.
Nancym replied to Woolygimp's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Body builders also get stretch marks. There's lots and lots of weird autoimmune diseases but pretty much everyone such disease is connected to celiacs so you might be on the right track. Good luck! -
Were you trying to drink coconut milk by itself? That can't be good. It makes up into wonderful curry sauces, smoothies, even ice cream. Coconut cream is the first pressing of water with the coconut meat, further pressings yield what they call the milk. I've heard you can even whip coconut cream, like whipping cream, but haven't tried it. Can you...

I don't think lactose problems will affect your sinuses. If you want to see what it feels like to be lactose intolerant, I think you could probably try eating a lot of diabetic candy with sugar alcohols (warning! Not recommended!) Your belly will swell up with gas, you get crampy and you might get diarrhea. The reason is, I think, similar. Those sugars...

You know, it's a bit like smoking. You might be lucky and never have lung cancer or heart disease or the many other diseases associated with it, but then again, you might be one of the unlucky ones. Celiac disease is connected to at least a whopping 200 other diseases. You could end up with a crippling autoimmune disease, colon cancer, brain lesions...

ARCHIVED Is Biopsy Necessary?
Nancym replied to lsaph's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
IMHO no, it isn't necessary. Doctors are split over that opinion too. -
ARCHIVED My Stomch Is Very Stubborn!
Nancym replied to LoveBeingATwin's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm sensitive to all grains. But can tolerate small amounts of things like rice occassionally. But I can't have it on a steady basis or I'll deteriorate. So wait until you've had a healthy gut for several months then try again. -
ARCHIVED They Still Don't Know What Exactly Caused The Pets To Get Sick...
Nancym replied to Nancym's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I agree we can't but trust at least vegetable protein products from china. How do we know if we're getting them or not? All these manufacturers in the US are looking for cheap sources. We don't know where the rice flours in those gluten-free cookies are coming from. If there's additional toxins in them, what are they? I hope they figure it out soon... -
I don't have advice either, other than I think the guy who writes for Heartscan blog is a genius: heartscanblog.blogspot.com but he works hard to spot the trouble before it happens and uses diet and supplements to correct problems. It probably isn't completely appropriate for someone in your Dad's predicament. I know the feeling. I lost my own Dad...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Home
Nancym replied to sara78's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I guess the real answer to "Is it good enough" is... How is your son doing? Is he showing any symptoms? The other thing to consider is... how is a young kid going to feel being around people that eat things he can't eat, but might like to. What if he starts getting into your foods? This disease can be very isolating socially and it would be sad to think... -
ARCHIVED Left Doctors Appointment Feeling Perplexed....
Nancym replied to Islandgirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It doesn't matter what the cause is people aren't going to understand either way. It's just best to keep the explanation short and simple and in terms people can understand. You tell them it is an allergy and it makes you extremely sick if you eat it. It isn't exactly accurate but people sort of understand that allergies are not to be messed wtih. Whether... -
ARCHIVED Please Suggest Some "good Fat" Foods
Nancym replied to whattodo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
While my gut was healing I found nuts to be too difficult to digest. Even nut butters. Seeds, even now, give me diarrhea. I'd avoid eating pumpkin and sunflower seeds as I think that effect might be more than just my own peculiarity. Macadamia nuts seem the easiest to digest for me, they're also one of the highest fat nuts out there. -
ARCHIVED Telling Your Friends
Nancym replied to TrillumHunter's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You really have to keep it simple because people don't understand. Call it an allergy if that makes it more understandable, if they're curious, they you can go into the details. But most of the their eyes glaze over if you get too technical. -

ARCHIVED Celiac & My Family
Nancym replied to Woolygimp's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You also should come to grips with the fact that most of us had negative tests but we had celiac like symptoms and celiac like response to a gluten-free diet. Lets say we have a device called the "Cheese-o-meter". And I give it a hunk of brie and it says "Not Cheese" at this point shouldn't we perhaps fall back on simple reasoning? If it looks like...
