ARCHIVED Exercise & Losing Weight
tarnalberry replied to Turtle's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
but you can do weight training that builds muscle strength without buiding significant muscle mass. it's quite possible to *not* bulk up if you train correctly. -
congratulations!

I get that when I'm sick - I end up swallowing air when my nose gets plugged up or is running or otherwise not clear. Quite annoying.

ARCHIVED Thanksgiving Blues
tarnalberry replied to KrisT's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
This will be my fourth gluten-free Thanksgiving (I went gluten-free shortly before Thanksgiving in '03 and that was my first one) and we've always done the whole meal gluten-free (and since '04 CF as well) and very low-fat (aside from half of the sauteed green beans). It's always been a huge success, everyone loves the food and everyone else who has the... -
ARCHIVED Body Rejecting Food..
tarnalberry replied to Mahee34's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
you may want to stick with whole, unprocessed foods for a little while. the stuff you listed (american cheese and oscar meyer ham) have a bunch of ingredients in them, and I know that if my stomach isn't happy, those things aren't going to sit well in it. (well, I can't do the cheese anyway... that will never sit well in my stomach.) you don't have to... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Challenge
tarnalberry replied to vampella's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
good luck! I hope you keep seeing improvements! -
I'm still taking it, though I'm at 100mg/day (75mg at night, 25mg in the morning), which is one half of the 'normal' maintenance dose for migraines. There are side effects, and it's not cheap, but when weighing it against the impact of migraines in my life, it's worth it. You can read the full PI here: Open Original Shared Link. The top side effects...

On the opposite end of jealosy hunting, I've had a few occasions where I was just FAAAR to busy to put anything together for a lunch, so, when the meeting came up, I sat there with nothing to eat while everyone else had their pizza. They'd ask "don't you want some pizza?" and I'd say I couldn't have it. They say "aren't you hungry?" and I'd say "yeah, but...

ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Pneumonia
tarnalberry replied to Mango04's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I don't think there's a good understanding for the entirety of the mechanism of the relationship, but it's there. -
It can take a couple hours, even for a contact allergy. I got hives from horseback riding (through jeans) and it took about three hours to show up. I believe hives from food allergies usually take up to an hour or two, but can vary a lot and can take longer. Detergents and soaps are the only things. What springs to mind for those areas: clothing (like...

ARCHIVED Egd....don't Want It~!
tarnalberry replied to chgomom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
and, given your history, there may well be value in having a baseline. she may be confident that this is what is going on, but wants to be able to - if you don't respond well or quickly - to be able to examine other possibilities effectively. if she has a baseline, that may well help her, since once you start making changes, it may become more difficult... -
ARCHIVED Flu Shot
tarnalberry replied to jesscarmel's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't remember what the other preservatives were (fun chemical names ) but there are others besides thimersol that are actively used since mercury was required to be removed from a subset of vaccines a while ago. I believe you that there's thimersol in some of the flu vaccines, of course - I could easily have misremembered since I cared more about checking... -
ARCHIVED Flu Shot
tarnalberry replied to jesscarmel's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
flu shots do not continue to contain mercury any more - in the US, anyway. (you can even read the data sheets on them, listing the full ingredients.) (this is a relatively recent change... past five years?) I actually did check up on the preservative in the pneumovax, and it was a benign one I've had in the past, and since. -
Many people here have found their migraines reduce after a number of weeks or months on the gluten free diet (3-4 weeks may not be enough to see anything). Not everyone finds that to be the case (I haven't, and a few others haven't), but it's worth a shot, of course. (If it doesn't help, there are daily preventatives that can be taken, but they aren't risk...

ARCHIVED Help With Soup Please
tarnalberry replied to 2Boys4Me's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Only ONE of them will work - only the right one. The other one will turn your soup to glue. Unfortunately, I don't remember which is which at the moment. -
ARCHIVED Migraines Worse On Gluten-free Diet?
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
the normal dose for Topamax is 200mg bid, so you may want to keep working with your doctor on the dosage. (it is supposed to be a bid med - once a day will not keep it in your system sufficiently.) and make sure to have a rescue med (I also use maxalt) available. my migraines do not appear to be food related (they became a bigger problem nearly 3 years... -
ARCHIVED Chocolate?
tarnalberry replied to kasia's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
while most chocolate is gluten-free, some isn't. (some instances of chocolate, for example, may have barley malt.) alwyas check labels. what was it you ate and what were the ingredients? -
ARCHIVED Flu Shot
tarnalberry replied to jesscarmel's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
ditto that. additionally, the pneumovax is recommended for celiacs due to our increased susceptibility to pneumonia, in all it's forms (not just respiratory). (of course, I had a *nasty* reaction (swelling/heat at the site), but it's proof it got my immune system going!) -
ARCHIVED Need A Sleep Remedy....need To Sleep....
tarnalberry replied to sparkles's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
* exercise (at least two hours before bed) is useful. (and before you say "I dont' have time", you have to answer the question of if you have time and room in your life to continue not sleeping. sometimes, we have to make time. I know it's hard - I've had to force myself many times in the past when life's gotten hectic) * a very set schedule/routine... -
ARCHIVED Danon Yogurt
tarnalberry replied to qvista's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
if they're just talking about the alcohol used to extract flavor compounds, I wouldn't even worry about it. (this is my pet-peeve complication in the gluten-free diet... rargh!) -
ARCHIVED Mission Corn Tortillas
tarnalberry replied to Guhlia's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes, definitely the fridge, unless you want moldy tortillas in a few days. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Here Play World Of Warcraft?
tarnalberry replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
My husband and I, and many of our RL friends, and many of our coworkers play. We're primarily on Kargath, though we have alts on Thrall as well. (Our guild got Vael down for the first time last night! ) -
ARCHIVED What Does This Mean?
tarnalberry replied to DelphicDragon's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If they didn't do a total IgA test, those two IgA numbers don't tell you anything. (They say you barely have any water in your glass, but you don't know if you have a really, really, tiny glass. A small minority of celiacs are IgA deficient.) the tTg IgG generally only shows up positive once sufficient damage to the intestines has been done, so I would... -
ARCHIVED Help With Soup Please
tarnalberry replied to 2Boys4Me's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
for that soup, I'd check which of the potato ones can be used for thickening (the flour or the starch) and use that one, but that's me. rice flour would work too. there are just a few gluten-free flours that don't work well for thickening at all.
