  1. I find dairy harder to give up than gluten, and my symptoms are even less obvious with dairy, and they're not at all that obvious with gluten! I can deal without bread, but there really is no replacement for cheese to eat straight up on its own that doesn't have any dairy. It'd probably be easier to be dairy free if I didn't have to limit soy as well, but...
  2. And there's lots of gluten-free cereal out there. (I like it dry as a tasty crunchy snack.)
  3. I merely echo what the others have said on dark leafy greens, beans, dried fruits, and fortified orange juice. For reference, some values from Open Original Shared Link: 1 cup collard greens, boiled - 266mg calcium 1 cup spinach, boiled - 245mg calcium 1 cup white beans, boiled - 190mg calcium 1 cup beet greens, boiled - 164mg calcium 1 cup bok...
  4. Their website has Open Original Shared Link Looks like it's the first number up there dealing with products.
  5. yep, they get just the active ingredient (the chemical itself) and mix it into a form that is consumable and stable. they make all kinds of ways to take the drugs - tablet, capsule, troche, liquid, cream, etc. to the best of my knowledge, they cannot do this for all medications (primarily only the ones available as generics, I think, but the actual restrictions...
  6. I would go, but eat something before hand, and have something simple while there, like a tomato/cucumber salad. (That's greek, if I remember correctly.) I'd also suggest calling the place ahead of time and talking to them about what you could have a few days before you go.
  7. Like with many things, I put this one in the "approach with optomistic caution" category. :-) some people with dairy trouble may find that even the small amount of pharmaceutical grade lactose is too much for their system, and meds that otherwise contain lactose need to be compounded for them, but most people won't find that to be the case.
  8. Movie theater popcorn 'butter' is pretty disgusting... My stomach is always unsettled after having any.
  9. Never go by generalities - ALWAYS look at ingredients and package labeling. Dried fruit, in general, is just dried fruit. You can at least assume that it's worth your time to pick up the package and read the ingredients, unless you're looking at date pieces, which are almost always dusted in oat flour. But a lot of dried fruit is made in plants that...
  10. pharmaceutical grade lactose is actually quite pure, and I generally don't worry about it in my medications (though I am casein intolerant). they usually don't even worry about people with milk allergies taking it, but it's worth mentioning to the pharmacist, of course. it shouldn't cause a problem - as the lactose is a the milk sugar, but it's the milk...
  11. I use fruit jam! :-) Yummy. Or apple butter. :-)
  12. I've had this phenomenon a few times, and can't imagine having it constantly. Even a week or two is enough to drive me crazy. I've heard (don't remember where) that it's related to vitamin/mineral deficiency - calcium? magnesium? zinc? One or two of the vitamins/minerals used in nerve signal transportation. You may find supplementation to help, though...
  13. lol. :-) not trying to 'dis' the microwave popcorn eaters. my husband likes the stuff (though I'm trying to convert him to the paper bag thing - you can add a bit of brown sugar to make it sweeter!) and I wouldn't be so horribly opposed if the smell wasn't so nauseating. ugh! I hate it when people make it at work! anyway... yes, you fold the bag down...
  14. Yep, when I go on day-long road trips or plane-trips (those suck, btw), I take a soft-sided insulated lunch cooler (the size of a regular lunch box) with an ice pack in it. It'll keep things cold for about 12 hours for me.
  15. regarding popcorn: I hate microwave popcorn - hate the smell, hate the chemicals they use in the ingredients, hate the chemicals they use in the bag that release bad things into our food, hate the taste. I've never popped popcorn in oil (can you do it on the stove without oil?), so there are two options left: air popper (tasty, takes about 10 minutes, though...
  16. yep, 2:1 is about as close as you're going to get (and what I had heard was the optimum ratio, but in a special needs case... I take rainbow light, as it has the right about of D as well (for bone formation, and since I'm in a high northern latitude these days), plus a couple other herbs, but is free of the common allergens (including gluten). it's 2:1...
  17. Well, you are in a tough position, there's no doubt. But you get around the comparisons by not doing it. You don't compare yourself to others and you ignore others making such comparisons. If they aren't productive in your life, don't let them be a part of your life. They'll just drain your energy and make it that much harder to do your job, your school...
  18. Ah... the comparisons... Bah! Drop them! They are useless! And there's no guarantee's that those women aren't having problems (or aren't poppin' all kinds of pills). I fell into the same trap (only, was having a hard time just dealing with one job, and a hobby or two, and keeping a house clean! no kids or school even), and it was quite depressing really...
  19. if you are dairy intolerant and can't use whey protein powder, you can get rice protein powder if you still need that particular item. :-)
  20. I used to have this sort of problem, but it wasn't celiac - a good portion of it was a combination of side effects of antihistamines I had to take (and re-arranging the schedule for taking them helped) and a testosterone deficiency (which was helped when my doctor discovered that and fixed it with medication). Daily moderate exercise has helped too. If...
  21. congrats!
  22. Them telling you that the specific food you ask them to try is not tasty doesn't mean they aren't supporting you. It means they don't like the food. It also means your friends are honest - let's face it, a lot of gluten free foods aren't tasty at all, *and* taste is a subjective thing. (This is something you learn to take to heart when you like chocolate...
  23. My husband (who's not gluten-free) is picky, so I was quite surprised that he decided, after a number of tries, that he was happy with Namaste pancake mix, so that's what we use if we're both having pacakes or waffles. I'll use a number of different recipes if I'm making stuff on my own.
  24. here's a Open Original Shared Link of ingredients to avoid that are dairy derived.
  25. Whew! Deep breath! I'm sorry your doctor never called. I'd encourage you to let your doctor know that you are disappointed in the service you have recieved. As for the diet, the first place to start is the easiest - simple, whole foods that you know are gluten free. Remember that gluten is only found in wheat, barley, rye, and oats - and anything...
