Talk to folks in your area - including HR - and find out how it works. The summons should tell you how it works too. I've had two kinds when I was living in Orange County (depends on the court system that is calling you up) - one was calling in every day for two weeks to see if they needed you the next day, the other was going down to the courthouse in...

ARCHIVED Republic Of Tea
tarnalberry replied to conniesteve4's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
totally fair to label a flavored tea gluten free, as flavored teas CAN contain gluten. (many, many do not, but they can.) -
ARCHIVED Have To Eat A Coco's Tomorrow For Lunch :(
tarnalberry replied to RobynJ's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
You don't have to eat there, you just have to go there! Honestly, if you don't feel safe - and CALL THEM (during off hours, so depending on your time zone, now could be good) and see if you can talk to the manager to get an idea of how much they can accommodate you. If you don't think they measure up to what you need (and don't be afraid to think that... -
ARCHIVED I Think I Found The Cause Of My Frequent Headaches!
tarnalberry replied to CGally81's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The vegetable broth in BumbleBee tuna contains some soy protein, which can be a hidden source of MSG. This is quite common for most broths (which are sometimes labeled "in water"), so be sure to check the can. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Here Eat Regular Soy Sauce?
tarnalberry replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The problem is, I know of no test that looks for JUST the 33-mer section of gliadin that causes the reaction. So, let's say that their process does break down full protein into smaller groups. Does it break down the whole protein in the right way that the secondary/tertiary/quaternary structures aren't able to form the proline rich surfaces that trigger... -
ARCHIVED Plz Post Your Christmas Dinner Ideas
tarnalberry replied to purple's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Not sure yet. We often do a large piece of salmon, various greens, always a salad. Probably something simple for dessert. -
ARCHIVED Pizza Parties At School
tarnalberry replied to NewGFMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Ah, I was confused by "Other than making the pizza myself which is a big, expensive hassle that would require me to take the day off anyway". If you think the school will watch him as you direct, I'd give it a try, but any time he eats around another kid it'll be something of a risk. Can you talk to the teachers and see what they think they are able to... -
ARCHIVED Pizza Parties At School
tarnalberry replied to NewGFMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Store bought gluten free pizza or store bought gluten free pizza crust and make you're own. They take about 10 minutes to prepare, and another 15-20 to cook. -
I would just be boringly repetitious. "Sorry, I can't have gluten. I don't want to be sick for two weeks."

ARCHIVED Anyone Here Eat Regular Soy Sauce?
tarnalberry replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
No, not a chance. Make your own chinese food with gluten free soy sauce or tamari. -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Hypoglycemia
tarnalberry replied to FixedGear's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have reactive hypoglycemia. Pretty easily controlled with making sure ALL of my meals are WELL balanced with plenty of fat and protein to go along with moderate carbs. And responding quickly if I feel symptoms - if I start feeling the effects, I eat something, so I generally carry food with me. -
ARCHIVED Can You Go Years Without A Flare?
tarnalberry replied to carecare's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
No idea if it's DH - there are SO MANY other skin conditions that look "similar" - but it could be. An adolescent "honeymoon" is VERY COMMON, so yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if it went away for a while and came back. (BTW, when they do the biopsy, the doc has to biopsy the right place - which is just outside of the rash itself. If they don't go to a... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Mom With Baby - When To Introduce Gluten
tarnalberry replied to mamonaco30's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
There has been research that shows introducing wheat *before* three months or *after* seven months, increases the chance of a child with celiac family history also becoming celiac. Between four and six months appears to be the best time for them. (Though really, four months? What with all the "wait until six months to start adding solids"? This sort of... -
ARCHIVED Difference Between Seizures & Panic/anxiety Attacks
tarnalberry replied to Swimmr's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The VAST majority of things you list there are classic panic attack symptoms. (Open Original Shared Link) Drooping eyelids and incoherent speech are not. But, these DO apparently go along with a subtype of migraine, not just a stroke. (Not that you want to have this subtype of migraine, of course! It's not healthy either.) But, I would encourage... -
ARCHIVED I Know, This Is Really Random
tarnalberry replied to Susy13's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Nothing, not even the internet in your hands, replaces reading labels. Yes, on everything that has a label, EVERY time you go to buy it (formulations change). The list of ingredients to avoid isn't actually that long, and that's what really matters. (When in doubt, don't try it.) Of course, as much cooking from scratch (which doesn't have to time consuming... -
ARCHIVED How To Tell Others About Gluten Intolerance?
tarnalberry replied to kellirae's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Just say "I have food intolerances and really don't want to be sick over the holidays." -
ARCHIVED Bob's gluten-free Oats
tarnalberry replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It's approximately 10% of celiacs who react to avenin, the main protein in oats. There's no way to know if you react to it unless you try it out. -
ARCHIVED Rash From Dairy?
tarnalberry replied to luciddream928's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Sounds like an oral allergy. -
ARCHIVED Digestive Enzymes Therapy Instead Of Gfd
tarnalberry replied to Mord's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
All scientific studies so far prove you wrong. I would *not* recommend anyone try this. Of course, you are totally free to do whatever you like with your own experiments on yourself! (AFAIK, no digestive enzymes, however, are able to break up the 33-mer section of gliadin that triggers the immune response in the intestines.) -
But it's important that we realize - for those who do not have celiac or gluten intolerance, it IS a fad diet. For those who don't need it, it really is "a practice or interest followed for a time with exaggerated zeal", which is the MW definition of a fad. If we just ignore that segment, and don't acknowledge those who are rightly seeing *some* of the...

ARCHIVED I Want To Hear Some Good Healing Stories!
tarnalberry replied to breavenewworld's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Been gluten free for six years, dairy free for five. It's going great. There are other health issues that I have to work with, but they are not - to the best of my knowledge - at all related to celiac (in my case, anyway). There's not a whole lot to say on it for me... I wasn't *that* sick, but the symptoms were affecting me. I stay strictly gluten free... -
it might not be a particular food at all. it might be a general digestive issue that is causing problems. depending on how you eat, it could be a blood sugar thing. (you say any food, but that's not sufficient to rule out blood sugar issues. if you've got a headache, eating a chicken breast probably won't help a whole lot (and depending on your...

ARCHIVED Go-to Dairy Free Foods
tarnalberry replied to kbtoyssni's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I use almond milk on my cereal - even my husband, who just thinks he's lactose intolerance, uses it. I just don't use cheese these days. I make tacos and enchiladas, but just don't add cheese. (Plenty of veggies, though. ) You can still make potatoes (using either butter, if you can do small amounts, or non-dairy butters like EarthBalance). Rice is...
