  1. Is it possible to get a hotel room with a small kitchen? That is what we got the last two times we travelled (to Florida and Vancouver, BC). Otherwise I don't know what I would have done. You then only have to take enough food to last until you can go shopping there, and cook your own food.
  2. Stacie, I am sorry things haven't been going too well. Unfortunately, that is to be expected at first! Of course, when other stress comes up (like the computer thing) that isn't helpful at all. It takes time to get the hang of the diet, and it takes time to heal to really feel better. And yes, malt is usually made from barley and wouldn't have helped at...
  3. Well, according to what I have read over the past years (and I read a lot), you CAN eat too much fruit, but you cannot eat too many veggies. You may want to reverse things. Two to three servings of fruit a day is fine, more than that is too much (because it contains fruit sugar, which is not good in excess, even if it's in the fruit). More vegetables would...
  4. Hi Becky! Your doctor is apparently quite ignorant of celiac disease. All last summer, before figuring out I have celiac disease and went gluten free, my food went right through me within at the most 30 minutes every time, no matter what I ate. When your villi are severely damaged, that will happen. And of course, as others said, some people with celiac disease...
  5. I would like to add that to get rid of yeast overgrowth, you need to pretty much eliminate most fruit and all fruit juice for a while, because these are high in fruit sugar! Just not adding sugar to things is not enough. EVERYTHING sweet must go, including honey and maple syrup, so the yeast has nothing to feed on. Oh, and of course, everything the body pretty...
  6. Well, another reason why Immodium made me so much sicker last summer! I took the pills, and I am intolerant to corn (all grains). I agree, ALL medications, over-the-counter as well as prescription should have ALL ingredients listed, whether they are active or inactive (as in binders) makes no difference (and I mean, even very small amounts).
  7. You know, Jeanne, I am a grandmother. My three oldest grandchildren have a ton of intolerances (and not all the same, either) and when I have them here (and I just had them for a whole week), or visit, I do my UTMOST to keep them safe and well. So, why do you think your mother wouldn't do the same if you explain things to her? You'll have to do it eventually...
  8. Congratulations, Julie, that's fabulous! New babies are such a miracle, but especially when you get a perfect baby with all your problems.
  9. I used to get those sulphur burps as well. I know they came from eggs! I get lots of symptoms from gluten and dairy, but the sulphur burps were definitely from eggs (I'd always get them shortly after eating eggs). Since I stopped eating just about everything there is to eat, including eggs, I don't have that problem any more. It's a long shot, since everybody...
  10. Well, I don't have a child with this problem, but I am the one with Tourettes here. And yes, my tics are a ton worse with gluten, and so is my anxiety. And stuttering is considered a tic by many people. I usually never stutter, but will occasionally, especially when glutened.
  11. I want to add that you do NOT have to buy new dishes. They should be fine if you wash them well. But a new toaster is a necessity (I bought one for $10.00), and you shouldn't use wooden cutting boards and wooden spoons that have been used for gluteny things, but need your own. The same goes for the colander. Only scratched non-stick pots and pans need...
  12. Melzo, biopsies miss damage all the time, for various reasons. One is, that many doctors don't take enough biopsies, and miss the spots where the damage is. If the damage isn't too bad (as the villi being completely flat), many doctors don't think it's celiac disease, even though they're wrong. Carla has a point, I forgot about Enterolab. You wouldn't...
  13. Hi Rachel, and welcome to our board. Well, being tested for wheat allergy and being tested for celiac disease is not the same. Many of us will not test positive for wheat allergy, because celiac disease is not an allergy. If you have been eating gluten-free for two months, your tests likely would be coming back negative, even though you sound like it is...
  14. Can't you explain to your friends, that even though you ate bread before, you shouldn't have, that you just didn't know it? That eating bread makes you sick! And now that you know what makes you feel bad, wouldn't they want you to feel better too, by avoiding what is poison for you? I really don't understand why some people don't believe us. Your friends...
  15. Yes, I peeled it. I was only able to eat peeled pears, because the peel has too many salicylates. And I've been having small reactions to many different kinds of pears these past couple of weeks (I tried about five kinds, to see if it was just one). I saw it coming. And I just ate canned pears, and something is bothering me about them as well. I might...
  16. Well, I am another one who is effected like that. I also get terrible tantrums, forgetfulness, grogginess, achy muscles and joints, backache, fatigue, besides the awful stomach ache and bowel problems. I heard that it is because in people who are intolerant to gluten, it registers in the brain much the same way that street drugs do................meaning...
  17. Good question. I have done both, and found in the long run I was much happier being terribly hungry. Because you'll be okay once you eat. But if you eat something with gluten, you'll be sick for days or weeks afterwards! A little fasting has never hurt anybody, as long as you drink enough.
  18. Hey, that's great! No need feeling bad, a lot of people gained weight being sick, you're not alone in this. I have gained some back (emotional issues, therefore not eating as healthy as I want to), and would love to be posting about losing more weight myself!
  19. Okay, he claims you're not intolerant, just sensitive? Somehow I didn't catch that in your original question. Well, lets look at it this way: If you really are just sensitive, then why the heck were you so sick? I believe you're intolerant, and will always need to stay away from gluten. And yes, you'll still have to watch for cc in a few months. In fact...
  20. Well, the difference is just in degree. In celiac disease, your blood test and endoscopy has come out positive, and many doctors believe that is the only way to prove celiac disease (they're wrong). Some specialists want to get rid of the distinction, however. The treatment is the same, no difference there at all. It is the gluten-free diet, 100%. That...
  21. Thanks, Andrea! One of our young cousins, who has celiac disease, just went to live for the summer with her grandmother in Vancouver, and I passed the information on to her mother (who is in Ottawa).
  22. Under a hat? Do you have a jacket that has a pocket in the back for self-storage.....that might work. In your camera case (camera poised to snap pictures, not in the case, pretend you're picture-crazy). Inside your sun umbrella (the kind that snaps onto a chair). Inside a normal umbrella, if it looks like rain.
  23. Thanks, guys, for sympathizing. I was still eating banana chips and hazelnuts for snacks, but now I can't tolerate them any more, either. And since yesterday dark chocolate seems to be out, too! That leaves nothing for treats, other than sesame snaps. And they are sort of high in salicylates, and if I eat too many of those, I'll get muscle aches. I guess...
