ARCHIVED Any Reason Not To Make Undiagnosed 16mth Old gluten-free?
Ursa Major replied to imagine22's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Courtney is right. You have celiac disease. You know your daughter reacts to gluten. You have enough evidence to know that she should be kept away from gluten. Just have her be gluten-free with you. And please, for her sake, don't ever do a gluten challenge, it could cause irreparable damage! There are advantages to not having an official diagnosis. Some... -
ARCHIVED Had My 1st Follow Up Endoscopy
Ursa Major replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am very glad you're healing, even if it takes quite a while. And you're right, a hemorrhoid is no big deal, knowing that you could have things a lot worse. I hope you keep healing as steadily as you have, and will have complete healing soon! -
ARCHIVED Dangerous Grains.....
Ursa Major replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Jerry, check out Scott's (admin) blog. Open Original Shared Link Scroll down to the entry titled, "Gluten causes brain disease!" A very interesting read indeed. Oh, and count me in as getting depression and anxiety when glutened. -
ARCHIVED Not Celiac Related, But My Husband Is Really Sick
Ursa Major replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
My youngest Daughter had the same sort of thing, with diarrhea as well. So, it is entirely possible that your husband has the same problem, and it will pass. If the diarrhea doesn't get better by the time the doctor's office is open again next week, I'd take him back. -
ARCHIVED Results Are In...
Ursa Major replied to Haleigh's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Haleigh, you're having an immune reaction to gluten, which suggests celiac disease. You're obviously gluten intolerant, and need to be gluten-free for life. No, gluten is in more grains than just wheat. Gluten is in wheat, rye and barley. Oats in America are usually contaminated by wheat, and most people with celiac disease react to them. You will... -
Why would you think that sounds horrendous? That sounds very reasonable to me. There is no way I would torture my kid for nothing, or put myself through the agony of watching my child suffer (or feeling guilty for purposely making him sick). I only gave the info on how you might get a positive biopsy, so you had the choice. But you already know that gluten...

ARCHIVED Test Results...what Do They Mean?
Ursa Major replied to azmom3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It appears that EE is the result of a food allergy. It is caused most often by dairy, but can be caused by wheat as well. I remember reading an article a while ago that made a clear connection to celiac disease, but can't find it right now. Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link -
Have you tried different brands and had the same reaction with every one of them? If yes, it may be the plastic leeching into the water that makes you sick.

Liz, six or seven weeks off gluten may have healed nearly all of the damage to his villi, because children heal incredibly fast. Meaning, that at this point a biopsy would be completely pointless. In order to get a positive biopsy, you'd have to put him back on eating a lot of gluten (about four slices of bread a day) for at least six months. Sugar is...

The best Omega 3 source is cod liver oil (or fish oil, if you aren't concerned about vitamin D). I take the Carlson brand, which has added lemon juice, and actually doesn't taste bad at all. It isn't cheap, but lasts a long time. But it is much less expensive than the pills, and easier to take.

Ryan was probably allergic/intolerant to something his mother ate. Whatever the mother eats will be in the breastmilk. My oldest daughter had to stop eating nightshade foods while breastfeeding her twins, because they are both intolerant to those (wonder who they inherited that from ). When she stopped eating them, their terrible rashes cleared up. Now...

ARCHIVED How Do You Cope With Asperger's People At Christmas?
Ursa Major replied to georgie's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Carla, great ideas, and you really made me laugh. Georgie, I think converting a bedroom into a study is a really good idea. Do you mean to say that right now his study is part of the open layout? No wonder he is unhappy! That makes him choose between two impossible situations: Either staying away from his computer, or being in an open space with it, where... -
ARCHIVED Test Results...what Do They Mean?
Ursa Major replied to azmom3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You do know that EE can be caused by celiac disease, right? -
My husband and I are invited to a 'redneck' party. You're supposed to dress and act like a redneck, and everybody is required to tell at least one redneck joke. It sounds like fun. Too bad I can't go, because they have cats and dogs, and I am severely allergic to those. My husband will go by himself, and I might just join you in hanging out here.

ARCHIVED I'm Having A Really Rough Time
Ursa Major replied to Nantzie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Nancy, I am glad your Christmas dinner went well. You've made it past that hurdle, which probably helped you feel somewhat better. Fiddle-Faddle's noodle casserole sounds good, most little kids would like that (and big kids, too ). I agree with making them eat whatever you serve, because it adds too much stress and work to do otherwise. If they refuse... -
Some people with celiac disease gain weight, instead of losing it. My naturopath says that weight gain can be a sign of malnutrition too, not just weight loss. So, eating a healthy amount of gluten-free food will help you lose weight (but only if you don't eat a lot of gluten-free replacement foods like breads and pasta). I also found that the less I ate...

ARCHIVED The Demon Constipation
Ursa Major replied to TinkerbellSwt's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Is your son still eating/drinking dairy? It is known to cause constipation in people intolerant to it. You might want to eliminate dairy, to see if it would help. -
ARCHIVED 2 Yr Old Son Possible Celiac
Ursa Major replied to KatieKates's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Here is a link to Nini's website. Scroll down to the bottom to find the links to the newbie survival kit. Open Original Shared Link I would like to add, that even if the biopsy should be negative, you should still consider the gluten-free diet. Just don't start it until after the biopsies are taken (and make sure you insist on at least six being taken... -

ARCHIVED I'm Having A Really Rough Time
Ursa Major replied to Nantzie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Nancy, how old are your kids? That would determine what kind of advice I'd give you on the meals problem. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Have A Challenging Family Member?
Ursa Major replied to a topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Cassidy, I had been thinking yesterday after posting, that it might be easier if she lives closer (not too close, though). Is it maybe possible to get her to move? I don't know what she does for a job, and if that would be an option, of course. But if she could come by car, and not have to stay over night (and she had to pay for her own gas), she would... -
ARCHIVED Possible Celiac?
Ursa Major replied to vampella's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My suggestion would be to just try the gluten-free diet. All your symptoms could be caused by gluten intolerance (doesn't have to be celiac disease, which is why you might have tested negative). Anemia is a typical celiac disease symptom, as are nausea, headaches, neuropathy (the tingling and numbness in your legs), as well as constipation (celiac disease... -
ARCHIVED Dumb People Suck
Ursa Major replied to vampella's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Good grief, that woman is definitely dumber than dumb. Good for you for being able to walk away without yelling at her. Too bad Emmah won't be able to keep going to school, but she'll be safer at home at this point. -
ARCHIVED Rash?
Ursa Major replied to Izak's Mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The rash sounds a lot like DH to me, even though the location sounds odd. I am sure it is caused by the gluten and will pass. -
There is really not too much you can do. Unfortunately, you may get a delayed reaction (I usually do), and might still get diarrhea. Going to the hospital wouldn't have come to much anyway, as they would have just told you that there is nothing they can do, and would have sent you home. Believe me, it has happened to me. I know I wouldn't be able to...
