ARCHIVED How Cool Is This?!shayesmom replied to 2boysmama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Heather, That it GREAT news to hear! You definitely found a keeper in that pediatrician! It is wonderful to hear of a doctor who is willing to try something "new" in order to improve the quality of life for his patients. THAT is the sign of a true doctor....no....a true HEALER.

ARCHIVED How Long Do I Continue This Diet?shayesmom replied to DianeByrd's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs It sounds like you are very stressed out and tired. And interestingly enough, I told my dh today that I was completely re-vamping how I shop from here on out for some of the reasons you just mentioned (travel, high cost, etc.). From now on, I am ordering specialty foods on-line in bulk. More often than not, it is less expensive, the shipping rates are...

ARCHIVED Soy Help Pleaseshayesmom replied to BemLmom3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Soy is a tricky thing to remove. And I have found that there seems to be varying levels of reactions to soy products between my dd and myself. For example, we both seem to do fine with soy lecithin. We both react strongly to soybean oil, gluten-free soy sauce, and many of the items that contain soy flour or larger amounts of soy protein isolate. The...

ARCHIVED New To All This...please Helpshayesmom replied to karinezoe's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs It does sound as if in the very least, you have several gluten-sensitive members in the family. I would definitely follow up with the diet. As for gluten-free being hard for a large family...yes and no. You may be surprised at how many meals are naturally gluten-free and also at how many are easily converted to be gluten-free. The best thing to do...

ARCHIVED Behavioral/emotional Symptomsshayesmom replied to Lizz7711's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs LOL! No...I wouldn't expect you to bake from scratch right away. It's the projects like the brownies, sugar cookies, cupcakes...the stuff that you only have to add an ingredient or two that I'm talking about. I've always enlisted my dd's help when doing this. It's our own special time together. I figure that she's getting used to spending time in the...

ARCHIVED Behavioral/emotional Symptomsshayesmom replied to Lizz7711's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs If your dd likes kale, then she may like kale chips as well (and what a GREAT snack!). I brush olive oil on it, chop it up, add a bit of sea salt and then bake it in the oven until crisp. My dd and dh LOVE this. And it's so easy to make. On Living Without magazine, your best bet is to just order it online. You can order just one previous issue or...

ARCHIVED Behavioral/emotional Symptomsshayesmom replied to Lizz7711's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs We eat a lot of whole foods. Dd is okay with Earth Balance Buttery Spread, which has a bit of soy...but it doesn't bother her if it's one pat or less per day. I use olive oil, canola or coconut oil to saute, bake or cook with. If a gluten-free recipe calls for oil or butter, I usually halve the oil so it's half oil, half applesauce (or other fruit puree...

ARCHIVED Behavioral/emotional Symptomsshayesmom replied to Lizz7711's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs My dd also exhibits behavior symptoms to gluten, casein, eggs and soy. One isn't really any better than another. And I'd wholeheartedly suggest that you remove all of them from diet (soy lecithin is about the only form of soy that dd doesn't react to....and even then, I limit it). The milk chocolate should really go as well. Enjoy Life makes a dairy...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Have A Crystal Ball?shayesmom replied to frustratedfamily's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs A lot of people have had success with Enterolab when regular methods of testing have come back inconclusive. However, the tests from Enterolab aren't generally recognized as being conclusive by the medical community. So it's a bit of a catch-22. I don't know if the results from Enterolab will help you decide to remain on the diet or not. Only you can...

ARCHIVED Going Gluten Free Without A Diagnosisshayesmom replied to Nic's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I currently send my dd to pre-school without a formal diagnosis. Plus, she has to avoid all dairy, soy, eggs and many food colorings right along with gluten as she's got other food allergies/intolerances as well. All we have is a note from our doctor stating that she has problems with all those foods. We get it at her yearly physical....and the school...

ARCHIVED Could It Be Celiacs?shayesmom replied to RainyZ's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I'd imagine that you could sub in some nutritional yeast to get that "cheesy" flavor. When I make breadsticks, I sub in about 1 TBSP of nutritional yeast compared to 1/2 cup of Parmesan. You may want to throw in a couple of TBSP of either ground almonds or cashews as well. Cashews taste more buttery and complement the nutritional yeast quite well. I make...

ARCHIVED Could It Be Celiacs?shayesmom replied to RainyZ's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs My dd was also 15 months old when we pulled gluten out of her diet. She'd been diagnosed FTT and we had run the gambit on trying all the stupid supplements, powders, oils the pedi gave us. Most of those seemed to make the problem even worse! We did later discover that dd had a mild allergy to whey and to egg whites. However, none of her tests showed...

ARCHIVED gluten-free/df Vitamins For Kids?shayesmom replied to 2boysmama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I believe that Animal Parade also makes a liquid multi-vitamin. And Nordic Naturals makes a gummy vitamin by the name of Nordic Berries. There are also gummy calcium supplements...I think they're called Yummi Bears?

ARCHIVED How Has gluten-free Worked For Adhd?shayesmom replied to FlourShopGirl's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs My dd was too young for an ADHD diagnosis when we first figured out her gluten/casein issues. And for that, I feel extremely lucky because even at the age of 15 months, my dd's hyperactivity was so extreme that I thought my dh and I wouldn't be able to keep it together for much longer. She NEVER sat down, not even to eat. And she barely slept. It was...

ARCHIVED Need Suggestion On First Bookshayesmom replied to Shymom5's topic in Publications & Publicity I personally like Carol Fenster's books. Cooking Free not only deals with gluten intolerance, but also covers several other common food allergies (which may be helpful down the road for you). I have one of The Gluten-free Gourmet's books....and many of the recipes are very good. But I am finding that I don't care for many of the bean flours. Plus, we...

In truth, this is a good first step to shed light on food allergy/intolerance in the mainstream media. And I think it would do some good in helping friends/family members accept the fact that their friends/loved ones aren't just making this problem up. It's not "all in our heads". A REGULAR, feature spot in a major publication would help raise awareness...

ARCHIVED Son Complains Of Leg Painshayesmom replied to mama2two's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs If you suspect a UTI, you may want to look into getting a D-Mannose supplement. It is a powder made from the ingredient in cranberries which prevents UTI's. You can mix it in water or juice. My dd got dx'd with a UTI last year. We did not have to take antibiotics as a combination of D-Mannose and probiotics cleared it up in about 48 hours. I did get...

ARCHIVED Tentative Dx And A Lot Of Questions..shayesmom replied to ConfusedMommaof3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs When shopping, a good rule of thumb is to stick to the perimeter of the store. All fresh produce and lean meats are safe. You'll have to be careful about deli meats as many contain gluten. Over the years, I've learned to make good use of the sales flyers that come to the house. If you can buy in bulk when the sales are on, you can apply the money...

ARCHIVED Can A Vitamin D Deficiency Cause Fertility Problems?shayesmom replied to powderprincess's topic in Related Issues & Disorders AMEN to that! There is so much misinformation on Vitamin D and the current state of illness in the U.S. reflects it. It doesn't matter if you're celiac or not. Many cases of cancer could be prevented simply by getting enough Vitamin D.

ARCHIVED Two And A Half Weeks Gluten Free - Unexpected Resultsshayesmom replied to Eric-C's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease A friend of mine had cholesterol levels at 371! I got him to try the gluten/dairy-free diet along with his "baby dose" of Lipitor the doctor prescribed. In 6 weeks, his cholesterol dropped to 205. Of course, he thought that the Lipitor made it drop. So he stayed on Lipitor and discontinued the diet. His cholesterol shot back up to 325. He's back on...

ARCHIVED ? About Dairy Reactionsshayesmom replied to buffettbride's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Our symptoms aren't precisely the same as a glutening, but it's fairly close. My dd's symptoms: hyperactivity, stomach ache (though not as much now as exposures are "trace"), trouble sleeping, loose stools with a yellowish tint, emotional outbursts, nightwaking or simply getting up horrendously early (like 5 AM)....then not nap all day. My symptoms...

ARCHIVED My 2 And 1/2 Year Old Daughter Has Celiacsshayesmom replied to Melimba2002's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Welcome to the club! Starting the gluten-free diet can be quite a challenge. Who am I kidding? It IS a challenge. But the good news is, it gets easier every day and once you've been at it a year or so...it will become second nature. Here are some of my time-saving "tips". 1) Make as many meals at home gluten-free. You aren't a short...

ARCHIVED New Here, My Baby Might Be Allergic To Gluten? Will She Outgrow It?shayesmom replied to 3groovygirls's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Unfortunately, I don't know of any specific research being done on this. I can only say that it's a basic method being used by many alternative health care doctors. And even then, I don't know if they've fully recognized the connection. Alternative health care providers are usually aware of the gluten/dairy connection in chronic health problems. Even...

ARCHIVED Continuing Problems After Going Gluten Free?shayesmom replied to chlobo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Yes, this happened with us as well unitl we removed soy and egg from her diet. Some food colorings and artificial sweeteners also set off symptoms. Since we removed those, all has been well. You may need to experiment with removing a few more potential allergens. And make sure that your probiotics are dairy-free. Many brands contain milk.

ARCHIVED New Here, My Baby Might Be Allergic To Gluten? Will She Outgrow It?shayesmom replied to 3groovygirls's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs You may want to have her specifically tested for wheat and oat allergy. I don't believe that there is a test for gluten allergy...though it's been a few years since we were at that stage and things may have changed. As for being an allergy that can be outgrown...I have serious reservations about this topic. From what I have seen, the IgE (histamine...
