ARCHIVED My Vitamins Are Not Digesting
RiceGuy replied to kathy2005's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It was malabsorption that had me look into sublingual supplements. I didn't even bother to try any that are swallowed. The sublingual ones dissolve under your tongue, so they get into the bloodstream without depending on proper digestion at all. This is the best way to be sure you are getting the benefits from the supplements. From what I've read, many supplements... -
ARCHIVED Tightness Of Jaw And Grinding Of Teeth
RiceGuy replied to Ricado's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I also used to clench my teeth constantly, and still do occasionally if I'm not digesting food properly. I did notice too that TMJ seems to run in the family. With all the other health issues of so many family members, I'm certain I'm not the only one who is gluten intolerant, but that's another matter... Anyway, I've little doubt it will improve for you... -
ARCHIVED A Bit Of Market Research...
RiceGuy replied to elye's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, although I make all my meals from scratch, I wouldn't mind some good snack stuff now and then. Crackers are one thing that I find very little of which I can eat. Price is a factor on the few things I've found though. No refined sugars, yeast, dairy, eggs, or potato seems to put a limit on this. Corn sometimes bothers me too, but organic corn seems ok... -
ARCHIVED Substitutes For Potato Starch & Corn Starch?
RiceGuy replied to PennyG's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Besides the sorghum flour spunky mentioned, there are garbanzo and fava bean flours, which add a silky sort of texture. Another good one is soy flour, which helps give a tender and moist texture to baked goods. The general suggestion is to use it in relatively small amounts though, so you won't likely sub the entirety of another flour with it. I haven't tried... -
ARCHIVED What's "gluten" Look Like To You?
RiceGuy replied to L.A.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think of the protein chain that it is. And how those four amino acids are identified by the immune system as belonging to the adenovirus. Oh well, so much for a playful description... -
For me it was certain varieties of corn that gave me sinus problems. It all started when GMO corn "accidentally" got mixed in to the corn designated for human consumption rather than being used exclusively for animal feed. The ones labeled "extra sweet" seem to be the worst, while others are no problem, such as a number of ones labeled as organic. I do know...

ARCHIVED Is Wish Bone Italian Dressing Glutan Free?
RiceGuy replied to Electra's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
OK folks. I acknowledge that Unilever says they will list when something contains wheat. I guess what bothers me is when a package doesn't clearly state gluten-free on the label. I mean, sure THEY may not have added wheat/gluten, but suppose one of the ingredients they use already contains gluten? Maybe I'm a bit too careful. Maybe I go overboard about it... -
ARCHIVED Help-multiple Allergies Need Recipes
RiceGuy replied to daisey's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I occasionally enjoy rice pudding or tapioca pudding. Both can easily be made without the ingredients you mentioned. I usually add a few fruits like berries and apples, which always seem to taste great in these desserts. It can't hurt to get creative and just experiment. Whenever I aim to try a new combination, I just imagine what the flavors will be like... -
ARCHIVED Another Newbie - I Think!
RiceGuy replied to Megsara's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the board! Well, your symptoms do suggest celiac to me. Though I didn't have all the same symptoms you describe, I would get extremely thirsty from even a small amount of wheat - like a bit of bread for example. Drinking tons of water just didn't help either. Since the range of symptoms is so vast from person to person, your best diagnosis would... -
ARCHIVED Is Wish Bone Italian Dressing Glutan Free?
RiceGuy replied to Electra's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, I'd say no way just based on the caramel coloring, which can be made from a gluten source. They also don't say what the dehydrates are of/from. I'm basically suspicious of all such pre-made items. The way I see it though, now that you know the basic ingredients, you could make your own so you'd know it's safe -
ARCHIVED What Happened To The Board?
RiceGuy replied to Michi8's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Wow. I haven't been on for a while, and had to use my email to log in even though the prompt asks for username. I did see though that the field says "email address", but since I have my browser set to remember the log in, it replaces it. That may be why some have more trouble than others. -
I think gumdrops would look nice, and they are almost always gluten-free from what I've read. Same with jelly beans, marshmallows, and I suppose gummy bears (shape shouldn't matter I hope). I don't eat sugar so I can't recommend anything specific though. Everybody says M&Ms are gluten-free too, so if you like those why not. Probably would look good...

It perplexes me why so many people think wheat flour should ever be used for gravies and sauces. Ask any good chef and they will likely say cornstarch or arrowroot. Ordinary flour is how you make gritty gravy with lumps. Just mix a little cornstarch/arrowroot in some cold water. The ratio of water to starch can be varied depending on how much you need...

ARCHIVED Monosodium Glutamate
RiceGuy replied to Tavi2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes, but the FDA has done exactly the opposite! Here's a quote from Open Original Shared Link: Here's yet another good article on how MSG effects the brain: Open Original Shared Link While it ends with a promo for a product, the scientific info is still just as valid. One-sided? Perhaps, but since MSG is in so much stuff, that to me seems like... -
ARCHIVED Monosodium Glutamate
RiceGuy replied to Tavi2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Huh? Did you see the reference to the many ACTUAL LAB STUDIES listed on www.pubmed.com? As for the duration of the MSG given to rats, they mature too rapidly to do the long-term studies required to satisfy all the requirements of those who doubt the harmful long-term effects of MSG. Giving humans MSG in the quantities found in so many prepackaged foods... -

OK, since you asked for it (and I guess you mean something more "official"), here's just one of many: Open Original Shared Link -
Well, in the case of a teen with no symptoms, I'd imagine they'd really not cooperate too easily. For me I would have been FAR better off had I been diagnosed as a child rather than all the suffering. Not to mention the damage that has obviously been done as a result of not knowing the cause of all the health problems. I would have been grateful to know,...

ARCHIVED Gingerbread House
RiceGuy replied to ylimaf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I understand that M&M's are gluten-free, and it seems most gumdrops would be as well. I'd guess jelly beans would typically be safe too. Of course do check the ingredients, and I'm sure Google can locate many easily. Marshmallows might be safe too but I ain't looked at any of these things. -
ARCHIVED Syrup.
RiceGuy replied to linds's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I haven't looked at a bottle of the brand named ones, but I imagine they fill it out with things like corn syrup, water, sugar, etc. Maybe you can buy some of the good pure stuff, and dilute it with such ingredients to suit your taste. I don't know if sugar would crystallize when used that way, but corn syrup won't. -
The sick ARE supposed to be waited on. You see, it's not for the sake of the sick person, but rather for the rest of you! The sick are being quarantined to protect you. Perhaps an extreme example would be a leper. These individuals are isolated for the good of the rest of us. In the case of more ordinary illness like a flu bug, we can tend to the needs...

ARCHIVED New Campbells Soup Commercials
RiceGuy replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
LOL, maybe! They actually put MSG in the tomato soup - labeled as a yeast of course. Like we need our tomato soups to rise or something? I haven't looked at the label in years though, so this may have changed since then. -
ARCHIVED Absolutly The Best Bread Products I Have Ever Found!
RiceGuy replied to Michael Kessler's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yeah, that's too much for my wallet. But even if I could afford it, I'd say it's too expensive. Gluten-Free may typically be more because it's a specialty, but it really doesn't have to be. Take a look at all your basic ingredients, and they are relatively cheap, including many gluten-free flours like tapioca, rice, potato, millet, etc. While not quite as... -
A lot of people don't seem to realize that most communicable illnesses are spread via hand contact, NOT through coughing/sneezing/etc. Things like doorknobs, faucets, food containers, counter tops, and so forth are among the most common means. Never allow a sick individual to fetch their own food items. In doing so they will easily contaminate the handle...

As I need to avoid yeast, this is closer to what I would need to do. Now I just have to figure out how to replace the sugar and the eggs while maintaining the proper consistency... -
