  1. i always tell my kids that there is no such thing as fair. we cook all of our meals gluten free for our family (there are 9 of us---3 celiacs) it is just so much easier that way----and, we eat most of the same type of things we ate before the girls were diagnosed, we just use gluten free ingredients. my girls were diagnosed the same time as your son--...
  2. if his chest is hurting, he might have reflux, also. two of my celiac girls (and myself) all have reflux. chest pain was one of the first symptoms i had when my reflux developed 15 years ago-----and i didn't have obvious heartburn.
  3. it could be that she is just drinking TOO much milk. one of my boys used to get the circles under his eyes and complain about "the bubble" in his throat. we took him off of drinking milk (he still ate cheese and ice cream) and the circles went away and so did the "bubble" complaints. my second son was on a bottle way too long, and since i wasn't well at...
  4. my kids have been testing by labs that use 20 as the cut off point and also by labs that use 7 as the cut off point. my kids levels were fairly low----i assume we caught the celiac early. the highest TTG one of my girls has had was when she was in the hospital for 3 months and a dietician was working with her-----she assured me they knew what they were...
  5. azmom---how old is your son? i agree that your son does not look like he is IgA deficient---just a little low. my son is IgA deficient and his total IgA serum levels are extremely low---like 6 on one scale, 7 on another---depending on the reference ranges. raised IgG levels may or may not be significant. i think following through with more testing is...
  6. you could use kids chewable vitamins.
  7. zachsmom---bean flours taste REALLY nasty if you taste the batter or dough before it is cooked------but they bake up really nice. the bitter taste is gone once the batter or dough is cooked. i have recently tried a few things from Roben Ryberg's book " the gluten free kitchen". she uses potato starch and corn starch. they baked up really nice with...
  8. she's above the cut-off point---and they are calling it negative???? so what is the point of having a normal range in the test if every doc interprets it their own way? this is just MY opinion, but i would think that any positive value above the cut-off point in a child that young would be considered postitive because young children with celiac often don...
  9. just becuase you don't have celiac, doesn't mean you don't have a gluten problem. it is great that your doc is aware that other people, besides celiacs, can have gluten problems. see what the diet does for you.
  10. you don't HAVE to do the biopsy---but i do remember that you wanted a definite medical diagnosis. i hope you can get into the GI and get the scope done soon.
  11. the antigliadin IgG doesn't necessarily mean she has celiac. what tests did they run besides that one?
  12. my little one has the chicken pox right now. she had the vacine 2 years ago. oh well, she doesn't have a very bad case of them and does not act sick at all. but, we did have to cancel her dental work that was supposed to be done on wed.
  13. did i understand you right----both of your boys were diagnosed with diabetes at only a year old and the older has celiac? no wonder you are worried about the baby having celiac!!
  14. adhesions from your c-section could be another possibility.
  15. aleve (naproxene sodium) is a pretty good pain killer------i think i used to take 2 instead of 1. OTC meds don't work for my tension headaches. i used darvocet for alot of years, but i have been on norco since my hysterectomy last year. do you get tension headaches alot? i have had them for so long that i have lost the natural curve in my neck---the...
  16. you can do a test to rule out CF, which would probably help to put your mind at ease on that. you could also ask your doc to do a stool test to check for malabsorption. the tests for celiac would not be accurate at such a young age. have you tried eliminating all gluten out of your own diet to see if it makes a difference in your child? if you are not...
  17. i had to laugh to myself when i read this---not at your problem, but at the doc saying they don't check for celiac here??!! since when can't ANYPLACE not check for celiac. sounds like what he was really saying was "i don't think you have celiac, so i don't want to check for it." how weird!! i agree with ursula---try an elimination diet----and when you...
  18. crohns disease can raise AGA levels, i think that psoriasis can, too. if you keep your kids gluten free, those AGA IgA levels should drop if they have celiac, but the IgG levels may or may not drop.
  19. shelly----the most reliable test would be to have a total IgA serum and a TTG test run. the gliadin test could indicate celiac----but not necessarily, it could be raised by other conditions. you would have to be eating gluten to get accurate testing done. i'm not quite sure why a biopsy is considered the "gold standard". one of my daughters had a negative...
  20. it's kind of hard not to think about it all the time when you have to watch EVERYTHING that goes near your mouth. i don't have celiac---but it is on my mind all the time because of my girls. maybe we need to spend more time on the thread that is just for talking about "other" stuff.
  21. there are other conditions besides celiac that can raise antigliadin levels---i don't know how common they are, but this is probably why your ped gi wants to do more accurate testing.
  22. our ped gi told me that our family needs to be tested every few years. obviously you or dad (or both) carry the celiac gene, so you could develop celiac at any time----regardless of how good the test was that your gi did.
  23. this is just my personal opinion---but i wouldn't put my kids gluten free without a positive diagnosis of celiac----unless there were very definite problems and i was desperate to try anything. i know that other's on here would be more willing to go ahead and try gluten free.
  24. most people with celiac have elevated IgA levels of TTG----unless you are IgA deficient-----this is probably why your doctor checked your IgA levels.
  25. that statement from clan thompson is not right----my girls test positive for TTG antibodies and do not have total villious atrophy. they obviously had some sort of damage in their intestines, but not total atrophy.
