  1. People can be so cruel! I'm sorry..... My friends have generally been quite supportive, but I have tried to nod and smile a lot. When they offer me pizza or beer, I just say "no thanks!" with a big smile. I keep a water or diet coke in my hand at all times at a party. When I'm offered something from someone that doesn't know the situation, I just tell...
  2. Hi Celina- I'm sorry it's so rough for you right now. But, I'm glad to know that you have a solution that makes you feel better! What a relief! Do you think it would work to sit down with your mom - one on one- during a non-meal prep time? Not right after she worked hard to make you a dinner? She probably feels disrespected, working hard to cook...
  3. Gelu65, I'm so sorry to hear that you are having such a hard time right now. I hope you can find yourself a great family practice doctor or geriatrician - someone that will really listen to you. I don't think it's wrong to try a gluten free diet, but there are many causes of night sweats including thyroid problems, medications, low testosterone, and even...
  4. I was diagnosed last year and was bemoaning my condition to an Irish friend who just moved to the US 3 years ago. She said much of her family has Celiac and it is quite common in Ireland. She said that it is so common there that many restaurants have a whole separate celiac menu and a separate kitchen in which to cook it. While I have not been there personally...
  5. I love Pumpkin seeds and have looked high and low for some that I like (I used to eat them out of the bins at the grocery store). I finally found some I like at Nuts.com so they are my new best friend. We also buy the Wonderful Pistachios at Costco in bulk I buy fiber supplements at our local grocery store I use brand name Advil for headaches...
  6. I have not had a pillCam. However, unless you have such severe disease that you have scalloping of the small intestine (changes that are visible to the naked eye), the pillCam will probably not help you. The PillCam cannot do biopsies or see villi at the microscopic level. I assume you still have symptoms that weren't answered by the endoscopy. Have...
  7. I eat gluten-free oats occasion. I don't know if you have true migraines (there's a medical diagnosis and then there is the really bad headache that a lot of people call a "migraine"). BUT, MSG is a common trigger for migraines as is red wine and other foods that are less common are avocados, oysters and red food dye. Maybe you are being exposed to MSG...
  8. Hi Weekendwarrior, I was diagnosed last year, and I am a lot like you. (I am a mom, though). I don't get GI issues. I was diagnosed due to anemia, but I have the muscle aches, fatigues, joint aches too. With regards to my own home, we eat gluten-free dinners every night. Usually grilled meat and lots of veggies/fruit. I did get a couple of new...
  9. Some people with celiac disease get something called gastroparesis. It's basically a slowing down of the entire GI system. So, the food you eat, could just sit in your stomach and not move on which COULD lead to heartburn symptoms. I'm not saying it's true for sure but just maybe a possibility. Since for some people, cheating causes weeks to months of symptoms...
  10. I was 42 when I was diagnosed with celiac. My symptoms were 6months of restless leg syndrome and 2-3 weeks of palpitations (both of these were related to low iron and anemia). I also had arthritis in my hands. I had gastroparesis (slowing down of the GI tract) which manifested as very minor heartburn on occasion. This was related to the celiac. I didn't...
  11. I don't have exactly that issue..... I have had migraines for 20+ years (but probably only had celiac for 5 - it's a guess when it actually started). But, I noticed when I went gluten free last year, my migraines became less often. I think for me gluten or untreated celiac is definitely a trigger for my migraines as well as many other things like stress...
  12. Well, I did miss the Gliadin antibody test listed and saw only the multiple high total IgA levels. So, I guess technically that's positive, but considering how borderline the result is I am not sure I would feel comfortable committing to a gluten free life without the biopsy. Once you go gluten free, you can't go back and do the biopsy easily. As...
  13. Antibodies are proteins in your body that your immune system makes to protect you. There are different types of antibodies M, G, A, E. They are usually written in short hand like this: IgA (Immunoglobulin A) In general, A is made in your intestines, E is an allergy antibody (run by histamine), G is long term and M is short term. There are many...
  14. I like the advice you've already gotten.... I would also add - why did you have a bad experience before with your EGD? Was it bad anesthesia? A bad nurse? post-op vomiting? If you identify why it was a bad experience, it will be easier to find a good solution. Address this issue with the GI doc. Maybe it has a solution so that this experience can be better...

ARCHIVED New Doctor - Austin Texas

My numbers at the time of diagnosis were >100 for both IgA and IgG. When I was retested at 6months, IgA was 0 and IgG was 6 so I definitely made improvement. But, weirdly, in retrospect, there were some times when I had made some errors in my diet - minor but possible cross contamination or like drinking a tequila that wasn't 100% pure agave... Thanks...
  16. I was diagnosed recently too and am still looking. I use Aquaphor. I bought some gluten-free lipstick from Whole Foods. Gabriel cosmetics. I don't love the consistency of it but the color was good. Whole Foods has 2-3 brands that are gluten-free and they have a list on their website with what's at your local store. I don't know if there's one near you......

ARCHIVED New Doctor - Austin Texas

Well, that thought did occur to me.....After me asking him, he did give me the name of a dietician but she knew nothing about celiac specifically and had no experience. She wanted me drinking kale and almond mild smoothies all the time but couldn't address some very practical issues. Some of my more atypical symptoms (fatigue, joint aches) aren't going...
  18. Has anyone eaten a Schlotzsky's with a gluten-free bun? Is it safe if you can get them to follow their standards to avoid cross contamination? I am sort of under the impression that there really are no safe restaurants at this point, but I have young kids and they love to eat out on occasion. They are the sweetest kids and don't like to see me be different...

ARCHIVED New Doctor - Austin Texas

I am grateful to my doc for diagnosing me with celiac last year. It was not on my radar at all since I have no GI symptoms (I was anemic). However, he pretty much just referred me celiac.com, told me to start a gluten free diet and he'd see me in a year. He gave me no other advice and recommended no other tests ( I have since had that all done). Any...
