  1. Insurance is a pain! But, one of the interesting things about the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) is that it set individual out of pocket maximums. This year it is $7100. I realize that it is a HUGE amount of money, but if you started to pursue the work up this year and don't delay, you could get everything done (scope, labs, doc visits) and know the answer...
  2. I'm so excited! The Austin area has a new gluten-free restaurant - Guaco Taco. I'm going there tomorrow night for dinner. I love Mexican food and miss being able to eat it out.
  3. I don't know if there is a simple answer to your question but I try to use "choose my plate" as a guide for my meals. Open Original Shared Link It basically suggests that when you sit down to a meal - 1/2 of your plate is fruits and veggies and the other 1/2 is dairy, carbs and protein. It's a really simple way to look at my meals and see if...
  4. I think it really depends on your gender and age. If you are a postmenopausal woman, you are much less likely to regain the bone naturally.....
  5. I'm sorry to hear about your shingles! They are so awful. There are several medications that you can take for pain- but the best ones have to be prescribed by a doctor. Gabapentin, lyrica, and sometimes hydrocodone are often used temporarily (2-6 weeks) for the pain. Tylenol, Advil and aleve typically don't work that well.... With regards to the vaccine...
  6. I bought Gabriel lipstick last year from Whole foods. I am curious to know if you are still using Arbonne. A rep told me they are gluten free recently, but when I looked on line, I am seeing some conflicting info
  7. You've had some great advice so far. I am wondering how you got in the habit of just one meal per day? Maybe you don't have a big appetite? Or maybe you've been feeling sick for years? Or is it a time issue - you need to eat on the run or at work and don't have time to cook? I think understanding what the issues are might help you get into better habits...
  8. I'm pretty sure my trigger was being pregnant...,,
  9. The same thing happened to me! 10lbs in 3 weeks (about 4months after I went gluten free). Some people gain weight because their intestines are healing and they are finally absorbing the food they are eating. My weight gain did finally stop and stabilize though. I agree with double checking your diet and kitchen for hidden sources of gluten as well...
  10. Yes, it is expensive! Here's my thought.....If you stop cooking with gluten in your house all together, all of the little, microscopic bits of gluten that are left in the cracks in your pots, cupcake pans etc that are left after several good washings will be cooked out of your kitchen equipment within several uses. This may mean that you are exposed to a...
  11. Thanks for posting. I think, however, we need to look at this study carefully. It was a poorly designed study to begin with. It was not intended to look at the effects of these medications on celiac patients. It was designed to see if patient's symptoms correlated with biopsy results after being on a gluten free diet. Here's the statement from the...
  12. This is from Quest Diagnostic, but it's pretty good.... Susceptibility to celiac disease is linked to certain human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II alleles, especially in the HLA-DQ region. HLA molecules are postulated to present gluten antigens to T-cells which in turn induce tissue damage.2 Approximately 95% of patients with celiac disease...
  13. I'm sorry to hear that your daughter is struggling so much. It is very hard to see our kids struggle. Only you and your daughter will know what is best for you and sadly, that may take months of trying different things to figure it out. I went through a period of adjustment and mourning (heck, I may still be in it sometimes). Type 1 diabetics are...
  14. I tried Schar brand and they worked well for me (I mixed them with chopped pistachios to make Pistachio encrusted salmon). I've only tried one brand though, so I don't have much to compared them to but I would definitely buy them again
  15. Generally, you are given conscious sedation for endoscopy (as opposed to general sedation). In general sedation, they give you meds enough to stop your own breathing. Then they hook you up to a ventilator. In conscious sedation, you are breathing on your own, but are usually given a medicine that helps you forget what happened. You can wake up during the...
  16. I have entertained the idea of going to a celiac center as well. While I am very grateful to my GI for suspecting Celiac and making a very timely diagnosis, the treatment part of his therapy is severely lacking. He basically called me on the phone, told me it was celiac, and referred me to the internet. See me in 1 year! I feel a little lost about...
  17. Any one ever heard of buying gluten free dental floss (or researching it)? I was just thinking the other day about things I put in my mouth and that is one of them! I don't get a lot of quick symptoms (most of mine are arthritis/anemia) so it would be difficult to know if I was getting glutened or why Any thoughts?
  18. Do you ever eat in restaurants or at other people's houses? I really can't imagine that anyone is 100% safe eating where gluten type foods are prepared. Also, are you sure the kids aren't sharing foods at school? At our school's there are frequently shared snacks. Maybe he's accidentally getting some of the treats - Halloween candy, birthday cakes, celebratory...
  19. Lenbh- I was diagnosed last year and I have wondered that very question. Not too long ago (before kids) I traveled quite a bit. The idea of traveling now with celiac is a bit overwhelming. I am pretty strict at home to avoid gluten and almost never eat in situations where CC is even possible- and as far as I can tell, I don't really get any symptoms of glutening...
  20. Palvyre- There are a lots of things that contribute to osteoporosis. I am wondering if you had your testosterone levels checked as well? There are many treatments for osteoporosis, depending on the cause. Fosamax (bisphosphanates) are certainly not the only ones! Hormones, Prolia, Forteo and there are several new ones ready to be approved by the FDA...
  21. Any generic medication can be made by a number of different manufacturers. You need to contact the pharmacy you purchased the Xanax from and ask them to contact their manufacturer and ask them directly.
  22. Wow! That's awesome. Congrats on your success. In my experience, successful dieting, whether it for weight loss, general health, muscle building, etc looks very different from one person or another. What works for one person may not work for another. This is due to a number of reasons: finances, family, time to exercise, motivation, chronic health issues...
  23. I don't know about Carmex but I use Aquaphor....
  24. Hi- I'm wondering what your symptoms are that prompted her testing? There are several different types of immunoglobulins: IgA, IgG, IgM, IgE, IgD. Each one plays a different role in our immune systems. In very simple terms, IgE is typically what you find in your nasal passages, lungs etc and is involved in allergic reactions (think runny nose, sneezing...
  25. My understanding is that most vitamin D actually comes from sun exposure to bare skin and good, functioning kidneys. Vitamin D can be found in some foods but that is not where we get most of it naturally. However, vitamin D is crucial in our ability to absorb calcium from our diet. So, when our vitamin D levels are low, it can lead to rickets (in kids) or...
