ARCHIVED Biopsy results
TexasJen replied to Lindsey1978's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am wondering what tests they ran. Can you get all of the lab results and the path reports? If so, publish them here. OR, take them and get a second opinion from a pediatric GI doc. Celiac diagnosis in kids is a little different than in adults. Maybe they only did an TTG in which case a full celiac panel might be illuminating. Also, if there is...- 14 replies

I LOVE ice cream! When I went gluten free last year, I was disappointed that I was so limited in my options - especially since mint chocolate chip ice cream is my favorite and it has been hard to find gluten free. You have several options- you can make ice cream and sorbet with a blender and a freezer or you can buy an ice cream maker. Check...

ARCHIVED How do you know for sure
TexasJen replied to Deades's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had vague physical symptoms but no GI symptoms: anemia, worsening migraines, worse PMS. My doc did a scope because of my anemia but I had severe villous blunting. My doc did the confirmatory antibodies right away. BUT, my antibodies were still partially positive (but much better) at followup testing 4-5 months later. SO, your tests might still be positive... -

ARCHIVED Birthday Party CC
TexasJen replied to mama.liz07's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Wow! What a tough situation. I'm sorry..... If I am eating with my hands, I always make sure to wash my hands right before hand. I know that doesn't help that much, but it's a good habit for your son to get into. If you do it all the time now, maybe it will be routine in the future. What about wearing gloves? He would be unlikely to put a gloved... -
ARCHIVED Lip balm with physical sunscreen
TexasJen replied to Jenny (AZ via TX)'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't know about the lip balm but here is an article about sunscreen. Open Original Shared Link I use Neutrogena Pure and Free SPF 50 Baby lotion because it is a barrier sunscreen and the carry it at my local grocery store. -
What about sunscreen? I put sunscreen on my kids all the time - and we use waterproof so it is impossible to wash your hands and get it off! I seem to always have a residue on my hands from sunscreen these days....... And some sunscreens use either wheat flour or oats in the mix.

ARCHIVED Was recovering. Now New throat issues..?
TexasJen replied to Alexacourtney01's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
About 6 weeks ago, I started to have new symptoms after being gluten-free for 11 months. I had sore throat, trouble swallowing, chest pain radiating to my back, and the sensation of my food as it went down my esophagus. I started taking meds for reflux (omeprazole) and it took 4 weeks of taking it daily for the symptoms to subside. I cut out coffee, alcohol... -
ARCHIVED Finally diagnosed
TexasJen replied to EasterLily's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks for the update! Glad you are feeling better..... There are some theories that there is some true pathology behind NCGS but doctors just haven't figured it out yet. I wonder if your fibromyalgia, anxiety, etc will get better over the next year or two as you stick to a gluten free diet. Do you think your IBS flares are you consuming small amounts... -
I have some very well meaning friends who try to make me food every time they have us over. Usually, there is a high chance of CC and so I very sweetly thank them for making the food and then tell them that I just can't eat it due to my illness. I say things like, "I know this diet is crazy! I wish I could eat your food. It looks so good". I draw the line...

ARCHIVED Good lunches for work?
TexasJen replied to Victoria1234's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I always keep a jar of nuts of some kind in the car. it's my go to snack when lunch wasn't filling enough or I'm running later than I intend. They don't get ruined in the car in the summer like granola bars, fruits, yogurt. And, if I don't eat them, they are still good tomorrow! -
ARCHIVED 90 days gluten-free but very sick.
TexasJen replied to Ginger1012's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I live in a house where some people eat bread. I do not use the toaster that toasts regular bread. All sandwiches are made in a special area of the kitchen and I do not prepare any of our other food there. If you have touched bread, you have to wash your hands before you touch anything else in the kitchen. After you eat bread, the dishes go directly (and... -
ARCHIVED Could I have Celiac disease?
TexasJen replied to nige2008's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm sorry you have been sick for so long.....One of the problems with celiac is that a lot of the symptoms are vague and can be attributed to many other illnesses. As for getting tested, I would. When you go on a gluten free diet AND have celiac, all of the tests become normal. SO, if you are on a real gluten free diet and do all of the testing,... -
I had no GI symptoms at all. I had some restless leg syndrome and palpitations from iron deficiency anemia. In retrospect, I had worsening migraines and worse PMS which are notably better on a gluten-free Diet. I didn't even think celiac when I was struggling with those 3-4 years ago. And, still today, I can't tell if I've been glutened! so, yes...

ARCHIVED Diagnosed with celiac's in 2010
TexasJen replied to captain america's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You should go to your doctor and let him/her check it out at least. Get their thoughts on what could be causing it - without the blood work. Just because a doctor recommends a test you don't have to do it. Sometimes, swollen lymph nodes can be something serious. I wouldn't ignore it...... If they think it could be serious, then consider getting the labs...- 1 reply

Did you call the person who put the crown on a couple of months ago? It sounds like a complication from his/her procedure? Maybe you could work a discount/payment plan since this sounds like it was an unexpected outcome? Hope you feel better soon!

ARCHIVED Blood test/symptom interpretation?
TexasJen replied to scanlanmd's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The sensitivity of the Anti-TTG IgA antibodies is 81-100% (so not perfect). However, there are no blood tests that you can do that can 100% rule out celiac. You didn't mention if you are still eating gluten - if you have cut it out, your tests might be falsely negative. If you really think you might have it, I would push for a full celiac panel... -

I gave up BlueBell when I was diagnosed because I read there is significant issues with CC. Is that still true? -
Yes! I never really had GI symptoms, but I did have palpitations and restless leg syndrome from anemia. These went away within the first month. But myalgia and joint aches aren't better after 1 year. Waiting to get my antibodies re-tested and see if they're negative.....

ARCHIVED Horrific alcohol reaction
TexasJen replied to Stephanie kate's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I will just share an experience I had..... I went to a steak house where there weren't a lot of safe options for me. So, I decided just to order a drink and eat later. I asked the bar tender about how they made their margaritas - fresh lime juice, fresh orange juice and gluten free tequila. gluten-free all the way. My husband went back to order for me and... -

I'm sorry that life is so hard right now. Really. I can't imagine working 3 jobs and trying to manage this terrible illness. I think about American society and their obsession with food often. ARCHIVED Rudy's Not Gluten Free
TexasJen replied to virginiagl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Since this post is going around again, I thought I would add my recent experience at Rudy's. The staff was very helpful and accommodating. I ordered my family's food first put it on a tray and then ordered mine separately. I ordered only chicken and turkey. The staff changed gloves and used a new cutting board and knife. My server washed his hands, wiped...
