We commonly recommend the shotgun solution to supplements for those newly diagnosed with celiac disease. First of all, let me say that I would be surprised if your physician would be willing to order a comprehensive vitamin and mineral panel to check for deficiencies. Conventional medicine does not give much attention to those kind of things unless there...

Yes, sorry. I didn't even try to scroll down earlier. It's there. The only vitamin test I see there is B12. RBC is high and that can also point to dehydration: "If the liquid part of the blood, known as plasma, gets too low, the red blood cell count seems to go up. This happens in dehydration. However, the red blood cells are simply more tightly packed...

What's interesting in your celiac antibody results is that the tTG-IGA is negative but the Endomysial Antibody IGA (aka, "EMA" is positive. Those two antibody tests are generally thought to be similar in what they are measuring with the EMA being the most specific for celiac disease test available. But it is also less sensitive. Kudos for your physician for...

Avoid Gluten with Elevated Antibodies but No Celiac Disease?
trents commented on Dr. Tom O'Bryan's article in Winter 2008 Issue
First, going back on gluten for 3 weeks is likely too short a time period to have much impact on antibody levels. The Mayo Clinic guidelines are the consumption of 2 slices of wheat bread daily (or the gluten equivalent) for 6-8 weeks leading up to the day of the blood draw. For an endoscopy, the same amount of of gluten for only two weeks. Second, without...- 3 comments

JeffGuy77, what is your age? Is your platelet count within normal range? Do you take blood thinner meds or frequently use NSAID products like aspirin or Advil? Are you taking supplements like fish oil or vitamin E that tend to make platelets more slippery? Sounds like you have some neurologic damage from years of undiagnosed/untreated celiac disease...

The trouble is, it's very difficult to get a medical doctor to agree to run full panel vitamin and mineral deficiency tests. I advocate the shotgun approach just to cover all the bases. Water soluble vitamins (like the B's) are nontoxic in high doses anyway. And it is unlikely that a celiac who has gone untreated for years will have just one or two deficiencies...

Welcome to the forum, kalest! You could be a "silent" celiac, i.e., being a celiac without GI symptoms. The lack of GI symptoms will make many doctors skeptical since most aren't aware that this is possible. The tangential medical issues you describe certainly can be caused by celiac disease. There is also the possibility of NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity...

As to "why?", that question is beyond the scope of the research sited in the article. It simply sought to establish statistically that it is so. "Why?" is the next step of research. But I agree with what others have said and that we know nothing about the gluten free compliance of the women celiacs in the study population. That could have a huge influence...

Yes, but the staff in the eatery at York were being dishonest when they told you they didn't have anything for you. You called their bluff and uncovered their dishonesty. I'm not sure why the staff there feels a need to act as judge and jury for those who desire to eat gluten free, whatever their reason for wanting to avoid gluten. If they have the ability...

Getting Tested
trents replied to CatherineG's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum, Deb2820! There is also the option of purchasing a home celiac test kit from a commercial provider such as Imaware. About $100 I think. -
6 yr old with celiac and constipation problem
trents replied to GGSE's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Welcome to the forum, GGSE! 1. Is she compliant with her gluten-free diet? 2. Does she get enough fiber in her diet? Even non-celiac kids that age typically don't consume much fiber. And gluten-free facsimile foods are typically lower in fiber than their wheat counterparts. I might suggest an orange-flavored gluten free metamucil-like psymllium... -
Getting Tested
trents replied to CatherineG's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My concern in this situation would be that, despite the symptomatic evidence that you have celiac disease, the test results will be negative and that might send your functional doc in a different direction as well as create doubt in your own mind. -
Getting Tested
trents replied to CatherineG's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum, CatherineG! I would not expect one week of two slices of bread to yield antibody test results that are valid. From your description of your reaction to gluten consumption it seems obvious to me you have either celiac disease or NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) and with Hashimoto's and the DQ2 gene it is likely celiac disease. Is... -
Airlines should be required to check with customers about food allergies as part of the ticket purchasing process - to have a question on the online form about their food restrictions. That way they could plan to meet needs for each flight. With the ability to cross link information in this day and age of technology that should be quite possible.

As always, these disagreement about the safety of "Gluten Free" processed foods usually boils down to your sensitivity level to gluten. I don't know why these arguments persist.

As you indicate, one value of this forum is that it provides a supportive community to help with the "feeling so all alone" thing. I certainly would entertain the idea of sitting down with the family and having a heart to heart talk with them about your need to be gluten free. I would recommend you put together a handout explaining what celiac disease...

Welcome to the forum, confusedandsick! Normally, there are two stages of testing done to arrive at a celiac diagnosis. The first stage is a blood test to look for certain antibodies that are associated with celiac disease. These antibodies are produced by the inflammation that celiac disease causes to the small bowel lining. Celiac disease is not a food...

Daughter test results
trents replied to Stephk774's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, like most lab values there will likely be some variation from one lab draw to another. The body is composed of a lot of interdependent systems and changes in any one of them can affect the others. Also, in this case, something like variations in the amount of gluten having been consumed in the weeks leading up to the blood draw compared to previous blood... -
Nutrient Deficiencies and Celiac Disease: Understanding the Connection
trents commented on Scott Adams's article in Spring 2023 Issue
Yes, in addition to the multi. B12 may not be absorbed particularly well in the gut. Sublingual B12 is absorbed better. You and your husband need not worry about high dosages of B vitamins being toxic. They are water soluble and any excess is peed out. With fat soluble vitamins there can be concerns with high doses.- 15 comments
