Extreme itching at night found relief!
trents replied to Night misery's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Yes, that theory has been around for quite awhile an probably originated with the book, Dangerous Grains by Braly and Hoggan. However, I do not believe it is given much credence by the scientific community. Your body actually needs carbohydrates to maintain health. -
Do We Really Need Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease?
trents commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Diagnosis, Testing & Treatment
Hi, Maggieinsc! Do you know if iHop's gluten free waffles are mixed with the same equipment, cooked on the same surfaces and handled with the same utensils as their gluten counterparts? -
Negative celiac bloods but persistent blistery rash
trents replied to Rosie82's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Welcome to the forum, Rosie82! Yes, it is possible to have DH with negative blood antibody test scores. A small percentage of those with DH do not have GI involvement. What I would suggest is that you have your skin biopsied during an outbreak. Find a dermatologist who knows about celiac disease/DH and who knows how to do a proper skin biopsy to check... -
Eightysix, welcome to the forum! The test abbreviations you post are different than we are used to seeing. The most common celiac antibody test ordered by physicians and the most well-rounded one is what we know to us as the tTG-IGA. I'm not sure which of your posted results would correspond to that. Would that be "TTA-Iga" or "Tissue Transglut ab"?...

Achieving a truly gluten free lifestyle is much more difficult than most think when they first start. Gluten is present in so many places in the food industry that you would never expect to find it and can be hidden by terminology such as "malt flavoring" found in many breakfast cereals. And then there is the issue we call "cross contamination" where non...

What you describe seems normal to me. And you are very early in your gluten free journey. I would expect the bouts of ataxia to become less frequent as you continue to distance yourself from gluten and progress in your healing. You stated you are probably NCGS. Have you been formally tested for celiac disease?

Welcome to the forum, Coranne! It will vary significantly from person to person and depends in large part on how much damage has been done to you neurologically. And some people never get complete resolution because the damage has progressed too far. But, you will help the healing process along significantly if you deploy some good, gluten-free supplements...

A very common experience, Treza. I was essentially a silent celiac and only diagnosed because of persistently elevated liver enzymes for 13 years leading up to diagnosis. There is much ignorance and outdated knowledge in the medical community, especially among general practitioners concerning the wide range of presentations and symptoms in celiac disease...

TTG IGA results - Confused?
trents replied to LDawn89's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum, Lyndsay! Please include the reference ranges for each reading. Without that we cannot comment as each lab uses different reference ranges for what is positive vs. negative. There is no industry standard. Also, the units are different for those two results. One is using kU/L and the other is using CU. It would be like comparing apples... -
Child with repeat low positive TTG IGA
trents replied to Sareliza's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Three years? That's ridiculous! Okay, in that case I'm changing my recommendations. I feel strongly that you need to place your son on a strict gluten free diet NOW and see if his symptoms improve. If you wait three years you are risking damage to his body systems. If he has celiac disease (and all current indicators suggest he does) you risk stunted growth... -
Child with repeat low positive TTG IGA
trents replied to Sareliza's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
More complete serology testing through your provincial/national healthcare system might be difficult to obtain. However, there are third party labs that do this for private pay. Do you have a GI consult scheduled yet? -
Child with repeat low positive TTG IGA
trents replied to Sareliza's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum, Sareliza! Have any celiac antibody tests besides the tTG-IGA been run on your son and has his total IGA been checked? If total IGA is low then it can cause individual IGA scores, such as the tTG-IGA, to be lower and even cause false negatives. I certainly would push for a total IGA test just to be sure his other IGA scores are being... -
Check with the staff and make sure they are not using the same utensils to cut, stir and serve the gluten free food that you eat during the morning and evening meals and that it isn't being cooked in the same pots and pans. What about medications and supplements? Wheat starch can be used as a filler in pills. Have you checked to see that all those thing are...

GLUTEN FREE CHALLENGE FOR BIOPSY
trents replied to STE9900's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
20 parts per million ("ppm"). Same as in the U.S. and I think that is pretty much the standard everywhere to qualify for advertising something as gluten free. But, some celiacs are very sensitive and the 20ppm standard is inadequate to keep them from having a reaction. There are a couple of internationally recognized certification groups that use higher standards...- 18 replies

GLUTEN FREE CHALLENGE FOR BIOPSY
trents replied to STE9900's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
How long have you been on a gluten free diet? Studies show that many people who believe they have been eating gluten free are actually practicing lower gluten consumption but not gluten free. This is particularly true of those still eating out. It takes time and education to get a good grasp of the many places and ways (think, "terminololgy") gluten is found...- 18 replies

GLUTEN FREE CHALLENGE FOR BIOPSY
trents replied to STE9900's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is true that in the UK if the antibody test numbers are 10x normal or greater then physicians can declare an official diagnosis without a biopsy. What I'm not sure of is if this is yet a universal practice in the UK. Have you communicated with your primary care physician about doing this?- 18 replies

GLUTEN FREE CHALLENGE FOR BIOPSY
trents replied to STE9900's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum STE9900! What country are you in? I understand that in the UK, if you have an official diagnosis of celiac disease there are government supplied stipends for gluten free food and also celiac follow-up care. If where you live there are similar tangible benefits if you have an official diagnosis and if the official diagnosis depends...- 18 replies

New and Seeking Help
trents replied to toothdoc's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Welcome to the forum, toothdoc! It is best to be a 100% gluten free household for a couple of reasons. First, is the one you have already mentioned. Supportiveness. If the whole family is gluten free, your celiac member is less likely to feel deprived and the odd one out. Second, and very importantly, is that a 100% gluten free household will make cross... -
Confusion
trents replied to Heidi Johnston's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
@Russ H, This is simply not true for many celiacs. Many of us reliably get violently ill in a short time after consuming gluten. With me, it's predictably about 2 hr. if I get a good slug of it. This is in contrast to being almost a silent celiac before diagnosis and going gluten free. -

Confused
trents replied to tkimzey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
"but I don't know if that's the lack of gluten for so long and my body is just like what the heck or if it's celiac. " It's most likely both and. Forgive me for being so frank and judgmental but it seems to me you are in denial about having celiac disease and there is no point in pursuing an endoscopy and the two weeks of torture you are likely...
