ARCHIVED Found Out Why Alex Is Still Sick!
Fiddle-Faddle replied to cdfiance's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Wow. Alex is so lucky you were there and figured out to call 911 and get her to the hospital. I hope things continue to improve. -
ARCHIVED Trouble Breastfeeding
Fiddle-Faddle replied to natalie's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Donna, the lactation consultants are correct in almost every case. Babies are made to nurse nearly constantly during the first few days or even the first few weeks. That's how the mom makes milk, just like every other mammal. The problem is the idea that there should be a scheduled break between feedings. That idea came from formula, but it doesn... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Or Gluten Intolerance?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to nitu's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I just wanted to add that, while Celiac is practically unheard of in Asia, it becomes more and more prevalent with each generation of Asians living in Europe and America and eating the typical Western (wheat-filled) diet. We have Chinese friends whose son is allergic to soy. We are wondering whether the huge number of vaccines given to infants is at... -
ARCHIVED Peanut Butter Brownies
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Umm, I tried to make it clear in my original post that I made them and they turned out really well (not just okay). I would not have posted the recipe if they had not turned out well. Thanks, Juliet, for the explanation! I always wondered how those peanut butter cookies turned out so well without any flour! -
I don't have any experience, but wanted to tell you of an acquaintance's experience. She had implants twice--and her body rejected them both times. I gotta wonder--we've got enough autoimmune problems already,it does worry me to think of adding implants into the mix. I have some baby teeth still. There never were secondary teeth underneath them, so...

ARCHIVED Trouble Breastfeeding
Fiddle-Faddle replied to natalie's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had the same problem--pumped every three hours around the clock for five DAYS and didn't get a drop until the fifth day. I had been given magnesium sulfate to prevent seizures--and it also prevents lactation, apparently. What I did have was good advice from the La Leche League. THey said to stop pumping after 10-20 minutes max. They also gave me the... -
ARCHIVED Sooo--elisabeth Had Dinner With The Queen
Fiddle-Faddle replied to sixtytwo's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Since Bill Clinton is allergic to wheat, I imagine the White House chefs didn't have a problem making Elizabeth's dinner safe... -
ARCHIVED What Should I Call "it"
Fiddle-Faddle replied to pedro's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The only difference is, celiac is officially diagnosed by having blunted or damaged villi, as seen via biopsy. If you are gluten sensitive or gluten intolerant and continue to eat gluten, the result is blunted or damaged villi. At some point, the medical community will wake up and realize that gluten sensitivity/intolerance is just early stage celiac. -
ARCHIVED Double Scheduled
Fiddle-Faddle replied to rebz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've never had a colonoscopy, but I have had 2 endoscopies done without sedation, and it was really nice to not worry about side effects or risks of anesthesia. It was also nice to get up, go home, and not waste the rest of the day recovering. I do think that 30 minutes would have been extremely tough, though--I have a horrendous gag reflex. I told the... -
So what were the brain lesions? (Please pardon my ignorance.) I am particularly interested in this as the wife of a colleague has MS.

ARCHIVED New To The Board And Oh, So Confused
Fiddle-Faddle replied to bnsnewman's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Natalie, unless you find a machine that has a specific gluten-free cycle (I remember reading that there really IS one, I just can't remember which), it's actually easier to bake the bread in the oven, and it turns out better in the oven, too. At least, that's what all my gluten-free baking books say...But maybe someone here has better luck with the bread... -
ARCHIVED Left Doctors Appointment Feeling Perplexed....
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Islandgirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sounds like your whole family is at high risk for gluten intolerance! I was just wondering about your reaction to the DH Casein Protein Powder--did you check the ingredients? Maybe it contained barley malt? Or wheat germ? I don't have the Dr. Fine link, but I bet you could google him ("Dr. Fine celiac colitis")and come up with lots of info. -
ARCHIVED New To The Board And Oh, So Confused
Fiddle-Faddle replied to bnsnewman's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, Natalie, welcome! I cried for two days when I figured out (no help from the doctors, of course) that I had to eliminate gluten. But it actually was so much easier than I'd expected! You can replace storebought bread with home-made, if you have the time to bake (it takes a lot less time than I'd thought it would)--and kids LOVE to help with... -
ARCHIVED What Do I Do Now?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Electra's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't agree that the genetic test will necessarily give you any information. Sure, if she has the genes that predispose one to celiac, that would be a probably answer, but what if she doesn't? It is possible to LACK the genes that predispose one towards celiac, and still develop celiac. -

ARCHIVED What Should I Call "it"
Fiddle-Faddle replied to pedro's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As far as I can tell, celiac disease (as diagnosed by intestinal boipsy) is what happens when a gluten-intolerant person continues to eat gluten, regardless of genetic predisposition. Those genes cannot guarantee that you will develop celiac; lacking them does not guarantee that you will never get celiac, as evidenced by people here on this board who... -
ARCHIVED Please, If You Believe In Prayer
Fiddle-Faddle replied to jennyj's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Sending prayers now--I had toxemia, too, and delivered a severely underweight baby(3 weeks early, only 4 1/2 pounds) , who is now (12 years later) doing very well. I hope mommy and baby do well! -
ARCHIVED Forgive Me For I've Been Bad
Fiddle-Faddle replied to JerryK's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Famous Amos cookies? Really? Gee, I always thought they tasted like sweetened sawdust even when I could eat gluten. What I loved were Freihofer chocolate chip cookies. Luckily, there's a great gluten-free recipe that tastes almost exactly like them: Open Original Shared Link It's the second recipe down, and it's so amazingly good, I have never... -
ARCHIVED Left Doctors Appointment Feeling Perplexed....
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Islandgirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Allergists don't seem to know much about celiac, as it's not technically an allergy. If you keep your appointent with this ignorant, narrow-minded doctor, you might want to emphasize to him that what you are seeking is health. Do you really care what he calls it if either way you shouldn't eat gluten? You wouldn't wait until a peanut-allergic... -
ARCHIVED Left Doctors Appointment Feeling Perplexed....
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Islandgirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My IgG was the only thing that was high--and it was off the charts (and I had been gluten-free for 4 weeks). But the doctor called that a negative result. My endocrinologist, on the other hand, said it was a clear diagnosis of celiac. One thing to keep in mind is that if you are officially diagnosed with celiac, insurance companies (health and life... -
ARCHIVED How Long Does It Take?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Walter S's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, Mj25, welcome! You might need to cut out some other foods to start with. Many celiacs are unable to digest millk products until their intestines have healed. Some are just intolerant to both gluten and casein. And most of us found that eating a lot of gluten-free breads, cookies etc., in the same amounts as we had eaten the gluteny versions... -
ARCHIVED Telling Your Friends
Fiddle-Faddle replied to TrillumHunter's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm not necessarily a wise one, but is it possible she was joking? Or maybe "intolerance" sounds mild, not at as severe as an allergy. My immediate question to her would be, "why on earth would I want to waste a few days at home with anemia and fatique?" You might want to mention that unchecked, it it is linked to all kinds of other autoimmune disorders... -
ARCHIVED Omg...i Might Be On To Something
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Rachel--24's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
One Thousand Pages--Woo HOO!!!!! Here's to the best (and most informative) thread EVER! Thank you for starting it, Rachel! And thanks to everyone else from whom I have learned so much. Question--what is the subject for the next thousand pages? "OMG--I might be on to a thousand somethings?" Change subtitles every thousand pages (rather... -
