I grew up in home which in 1960's and 1970's was quite unusual..as my mother had an idea that being exposed to germs kept us healthy. She cleaned home of course and used cleaners and bleach but wasn't off the wall about washing hands or playing in dirt outside. We were not sicker than any other neighborhood children. I married husband who is "Felix...

ARCHIVED Leaving Job: What Reasons Has Anyone Ever Given For
debmidge posted a topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Has anyone ever been in spot where you had a job you hated, but didn't want to tell the exact truth to them when you left as to why you were leaving because the truth could be turned around and used against you if anyone ever called them for a reference? -
I like classic names too; but I like Gunther as a first name. I think it could be a German orgin anyway so it would fit with the last name. My sister in law wanted to name her girl some odd sounding name and my only comment was "make sure it doesn't mean something else (that could be a bad word) in another language...." I've always - since the 1...

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Else Done This?
debmidge replied to Kyalesyin's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
As a mixed marriage (celiac and non celiac) we do it this way: house is about 95% gluten-free with exception of pre-packaged Lean Cuisines in freezer which get popped in microwave and do not contaminate anything. I keep a loaf of regular whole wheat bread for me for my lunches and I make my lunch every morning making sure to keep table wiped well afterwards... -
ARCHIVED Just On The News - Wheat Gluten The Cause Of The "bad" Pet Food
debmidge replied to cycler's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
(I originally meant that if cycler is probably as busy as I am he/she probably doesn't get to know the news as fast as others do). That's a full day for you Larry to read entire newspaper a day and watch TV so frequently. I keep AM station on a work but I am on the phone working too much to listen to it intently enough to be kept up to date. It's... -

ARCHIVED Just On The News - Wheat Gluten The Cause Of The "bad" Pet Food
debmidge replied to cycler's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
there are times I am so busy that I don't get to listen or watch the news for a few days. so I can understand Larry's delay in getting this information. For instance, I cannot watch newscasts before I go to bed as I'll have nightmares. Been like that for years. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Watch Dancing With The Stars?
debmidge replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Nikki: Despite Heather being on "Dancing" our press here over the past few years haven't been portraying her as "mentally well". I recall years before her leaving Sir Paul that the NY Post reporting that she has problems telling the truth (putting it mildly). Something about her story about being homeless was a fabrication. As to her performance... -
ARCHIVED Any Phd Chemists Out There?
debmidge replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Karen Rather than go to basement try eating something that has natural (gluten-free) mold like melon or banana or something fermented and maybe it'll help.... -
Condolences on the loss of your Dad. take a deep breath and recall his life in good memories. the sadness may lift after a while but he'll be in your heart forever. it took me about a year to stop bursting out in tears in public.

ARCHIVED 17 Years Of Misery
debmidge replied to cat40's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I concur that you need a good medical workup anyway. So have gluten and get tested - but if results are negative, and you feel better going gluten free, then by all means go gluten free from then on. Hoping you feel better and get a conculsion on this health problem. Don't feel shy about asking any questions. Someone will definitely know the answer... -

ARCHIVED How Do You Cook Rice?
debmidge replied to alamaz's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I purchased a "diffuser" which is metal and goes over the burner to keep the flame from getting too high on the burner and ruining the rice (or anything else I may cook for that matter). -
ARCHIVED Getting Life Insurance With A Diagnosis Of Celiac
debmidge replied to shelby1's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Metlife wrote a life policy for my husband last year and we were upfront about it. They gave him rates for a healthy person (not high risk). They did not shy away from celiac disease. -

ARCHIVED "special" Circumstances
debmidge replied to clbevilacqua's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Question to world travelers then: would it then be safe to presume that when US person is traveling to countries whose official language is English, even if you had to ditch your supplies it wouldn't be so difficult to buy new ones when there? Especially when going to countries who acknowledge celiac disease more than ours does? -
ARCHIVED Poll:cut Or Wear Your Hair How You Want?
debmidge replied to LoveBeingATwin's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I rather have my husband admire and fantasize about my long hair, which he prefers, than constantly wishing for my short hair to grow in and admiring someone else's long hair..... It's such a small request of his and although it does not take any more maintenance (for me) than it does for short hair (when my hair is short, unless I curling iron it or... -
ARCHIVED Please Help! Kitchen Question
debmidge replied to mf in CA's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
for us some items were thrown away, some things were purchased new (toaster and utensils); I kept my gluteny toaster however but it's stored in plastic bag in cabinet in case I need to use it; and somethings were washed throughly and now are gluten-free use only. Purchased new: macaroni strainer, toaster, utensils, fry pan, bread machine. As to foods... -
ARCHIVED Whole Foods Market Labels
debmidge replied to pugluver31902's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
funny that you mention this story but my WF no longer has the little blue flags on the shelf by the product which states gluten-free status. This might be the future of WF as regards labeling gluten-free items on the shelf. Proceed with caution in how you approach WF as you might give them reason to never label gluten-free items again....but in either... -
ARCHIVED Random Question- Is Anyone Good At Political Science And Bsing Papers?
debmidge replied to es2443's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
What do you mean about "human nature is constant"? Constant in that thru the eons man has created societies, wants to be social but yet is basically evil, constantly batting his evil nature to stay within the reins of a complex societal format? And that a limited government represents the complex societal format; this government then creates, implements... -
sometimes people with blood sugar issues get boils a lot - diabetics or pre-diabetic. I have trouble with them too and I occasionally wash with an iodine wash from drug store......the reddish wash that they use in hospitals prior to surgery.

ARCHIVED Translation Please?

sometimes hard candies have barley in them and the problem is that manufacturers do not as yet have to list barley as the allergen, only grain they have to identify is wheat (right?). -
ARCHIVED Need Help With A Recipe
debmidge replied to Guhlia's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have found that using a little corn flour in the place of corn meal helps; but I have never made Hush Puppies so this would be experimental for them.....I get corn flour from Kinnikinnick in Canada
