ARCHIVED Malabsorption - Celiac Disease = Catastrophe Living
debmidge replied to Ms. Skinny Chic's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My husband had been misdiagnosed Celiac for 27 years and became malnourished due to malabsorption. The gastro who finally diagnosed him said that there's nothing else wrong other than celiac and soy allergy (and hiatial hernia and two or three duodunem uclers which are healed) and he has no idea why my husband cannot gain his weight back. My husband... -
We did the same thing - went thru the trouble of writing letter to insurance company and got "permisson" to see dietician. The visit was a waste of time. This forum and celiac.com and the celiac organizations provided much more information than the dietician did. Had I known I would not have wasted the time and effort.

ARCHIVED Is It Silly To Worry About Lunch Meat?
debmidge replied to mr. moore's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I buy these and they aren't bad.....I just have to remember to take the meat out of the container before I use my whole wheat bread (I am not the celiac, husband is). I do not handle the bread until after the meat is taken out of the container and it's put back in the refrigerator. Only then do I handle my bread so that I know I am not contaminating... -
ARCHIVED Doctors - How Do I Get Them To Listen?
debmidge replied to JRock's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Jen Not that this is a factor for you, but when I was one "The Pill" I used to get migraines very often. I never got the connection between medication and headache until I got off Pill. I like the email messaging to Dr. That's a great idea....at least it gets a short message over to the Dr. so they have something to refer to when you do actually... -
ARCHIVED Relationships With Someone Without Celiac
debmidge replied to nickjc055's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Nick We've been married for 29 years....my husband was not diagnosed until 5 years ago but had been very, very ill for over 29 years. As the non-celiac, I have great compassion for him and am always there for him. You have to be very selective of whom you chose to share your life with you - after a couple of dates you should know if the person... -
Bumped up for other member who is traveling to Newark NJ
-
I have a friend who does not tell tales. Recently in Union, NJ she was in strip mall parking lot on Route 22 West and some men attempted to abduct her. She's about 68 years old. This was between 3:00-3:30 in afternoon on a weekday. She was walking out of her car, a dark panel van with blaring music pulled up. The doors opened and 3 men came out...

I can talk to you about Newark NJ....however it's a big city - where in Newark will you be headed? Downtown? Will you be renting a car when you get there? Will you be staying Downtown or near Newark Liberty Airport? Even your general location in Newark will help me provide you with an answer. Just recently another board member had to go to downtown...

ARCHIVED Post Egd/gluten-challenge Rant
debmidge replied to julirama723's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Jaime: Try getting a life quote from MetLife. My husband got a policy and we were upfront with the celiac info. The underwriter actually knew what it was and the agent got a quote. He isn't on the Preferred rates, just the standard rates. At least he has life insurance now. D. -
ARCHIVED Post Egd/gluten-challenge Rant
debmidge replied to julirama723's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Dear Juli Sometimes there's a benefit to not having a formal diagnosis.....for purposes of obtaining health insurance or life insurance. Perhaps it's not a bad thing after all....but you know you should go gluten free and that's all that matters. You live your life without gluten and see if that improves your condition and if somehow you need a formal... -

Warning Avon makes a great Wash-off waterproof but I don't know if it's gluten free. Any Avon ladies here to verify? -
ARCHIVED Campbells Soup And Swanson Broth Alerts
debmidge replied to LDJofDenver's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Everyone who knows me knows my husband has celiac, not me. This being said I have to add I have an Italian background. My Italian grandmother never put wheat (nor sugar or corn syrup) in her sauce - and I'd never eat sauce with wheat in it - yuck! As my grandmother would exclaim "Amerigan!" If sauce is made correctly, it does not need thickener... -

ARCHIVED Your Moms Pie Crust
debmidge replied to melrobsings's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I second Jenny's message - down to the extra xanthan gum. However, I can't use a whole box - makes too much (4 pie shells) ; so I judge half of the mix and make half. I have never been disappointed with the mix. Additionally, Whole Foods sells a frozen gluten-free pie shell which is good too..... -

Hopefully they can work something out (on those ingredient labels) to help those who can never consume gluten. -
ARCHIVED Symptom Of Undiagnosed Celiac Disease?
debmidge replied to debmidge's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
wel.....she has been with multiple B.M.s for many years....she doesn't go to her doctor anymore. She was put on a "halter monitor" for about 4 days and nothing substantial showed up although he put her on some kind of heart medicines, which I do not think she takes any more. She hasn't had a faining spell since a couple of years ago, but that one... -
ARCHIVED I Could Just Scream!
debmidge replied to mysecretcurse's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have an explanation to offer.....no it's not my philosophy, but it's the only conclusion I can come up with is: close relatives could be in denial about your disease. Or could be testing you to see if you "really" react to gluten, as sick as that sounds. These are 2 things which my husband has gone through with his family and his solution... -

ARCHIVED What Soap And Shampoo Do You Use?
debmidge replied to frec's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We use DHS Fragrance Free shampoo (no perfumes or colors , no gluten). It's pretty basic. I get it over internet at "drugstore" stype store. -
ARCHIVED Avon?
debmidge replied to Ladycates's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Good to hear that there's someone who will answer on behalf of Avon, but it would be better to hear it from corporate. -
ARCHIVED Neutrogena
debmidge replied to frec's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There could be oat protein in the product, so that would mean yes wheat-free, but no gluten free... I switched to DHS shampoo made by Person & Covey Inc. from Glendale CA. I get it over internet. It's fragrance free. Do not buy this fragrance free shampoo because it has wheat in it: Earth Science. I purchased it in error. -
ARCHIVED Symptom Of Undiagnosed Celiac Disease?
debmidge replied to debmidge's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It's my celiac husband's sister.... I am trying to get her to get tested for celiac disease but she is resisting...but has some gas & stomach issues and makes more BM's than average (all this has been going on for years). She eats and is painfully thin. Lately she's having fainting spells - so bad that last summer she fell from fainting after she... -

Can you use TEA-Lauryl Sulfate? I use gluten-free shampoo called DHS, but it has the above ingredient in it. DHS is made by Person & Covey, Inc. of Glendale CA
