ARCHIVED Endoscopy - Biopsy
debmidge posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had endoscopy this week as I have been having non stop "D" for a month now. Dr. told me he took biopsy for the H. Pylori bacteria and to rule out celiac disease. My question is: wouldn't he see flattened villi to determine celiac? (I did not have flattened villi). How would dr. then get a determination of celiac from a tissue sample? Thanks... -
Please, please stop smoking. I am non-smoker and I have seen the pain smoking brings in the way of disease so I have nothing but sad stories. 1) My aunt smoked since she was a teen. When she was 57 she lost a lung to cancer. Dr. removed the cancer - got it out all the way - it even inflitrated the heart sack and he said had he known...

The Smithville Inn advised me that they can accomodate a gluten free meal but you must ask the server/manager so that the chef knows what to do. I believe the manager's name is Heather (I lost her business card). The Owners of Smithville Inn also own Fred & Ethel's Tavern and they can do gluten free too (they are more like a casual tavern, the...

ARCHIVED Top Three Worst Gf Products
debmidge replied to anerissara's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Don't want to mess up this thread but have a funny EnerG bread story When my husband was first diagnosed I purchased loaf via mail & had it delivered to my office. It was around Christmas time and we do receive food presents from clients and vendors. The day my package came one of the managers (not my Dept.) intercepted the box (it clearly... -
ARCHIVED Starbucks To Debut Gluten Free Cake
debmidge replied to savvvyseller's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi It's unheard of here in USA to have a cafe/coffee shop offer a gluten free bakery item. If it happens it's rare. My thinking is that the shops are afraid that they will not be able to sell the gluten-free items and they will be stuck throwing them away. -

ARCHIVED Private Health Insurance
debmidge replied to wschmucks's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Firstly, you have to read your current health insurance policy to see how they would respond to health issues when you are temporarily overseas (foreign countries). You have to find out what their definition of "coverage territory" and "temporary" is (3 months, 6 months?). COBRA is available only if your employer meets certain criteria .... -

ARCHIVED Anyone Here Allergic To Cats?
debmidge replied to Armae's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I am severely allergic to cats to the point that they trigger my asthma. I do not own a cat - I can't be in the room long enough - 20 minutes is my limit - so I can't even try self-desensitization. I asked allergist for the shots to desensitize (forgive my spelling) and her response was she was not going to put that into my body unless I already had... -
ARCHIVED Betty Crocker gluten-free Mixes
debmidge replied to purple's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Great news! Now the next question: is the product made on gluten-free dedicated lines? This would be necessary for the super-sensitive celiacs. -
ARCHIVED The Funny Pages - Tickle Me Elbow - The Original
debmidge replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
No, just agree with her repeatedly. A Couple of years ago a condo assn went up for 55+; my husband being 55 was eligible so I called the contractor's office to discuss pricing, etc. The woman who answered the phone spoke with me a while and then said : "...your voice is so young....you can't be 55 years old (to qualify) (I was younger than 5... -
This topic makes me curious now to do an "at home patch" on me and my husband and see how/if each of us have a skin response and if my husband has a "glutened" response in any other way. My test would be showing how a non-celiac would respond, if at all. However, I do have allergies to plants and my test might show some irritation of some sort. Does...

Raisin, I wanted to ask you about the band-aide glutening....what was the reaction?...was it confined to your skin area where the sticky part of the band aide sticks? Was it a brand-name band aide or an Off-Brand? On a side-note, my sister in law is allergic to the ingredient in detergent which acts as a whitner & britener. She's allergic... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Cough Syrup?
debmidge replied to debmidge's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks - Cough syrup is one of those things that when you need it, you need it immediately. The worst part of "shopping" for it, is when the manufacturer closes at 5 PM and you're in the drugstore or supermarket buying it and it's after 5 PM and you can't get an answer but you need the medicine badly. At that point you are wishing the manufacturer would... -

ARCHIVED 100% gluten-free Shampoo?
debmidge replied to raisin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
None of the ingredients on its label are gluten-based, as per my gluten free ingredient guide from the Celiac Sprue Assn. but if it's a concern to you then please do not use it then since we do not know if it's made on a CC-free manufacturing line. I now wonder if when a "regular" company like Palmolive, Dove, Alberto-Culver, Protor and Gamble has... -

ARCHIVED 100% gluten-free Shampoo?
debmidge replied to raisin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We use DHS brand but I can only find it at drugstore dot com it's made by Person & Covey, Inc. and it's the fragrance free Clear Shampoo. L'Oreal advised me that they cannot ascertain if their shampoos have gluten due to the fragrance as that is where the gluten is hidden. -

ARCHIVED Hoping To Meet People Like Me
debmidge replied to C.S. Blogsmith's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Dear Blogsmith, My husband had the same experience when he first became sick in 1977 - but he did not know he had celiac disease; thought it was colitis. When he was 26 years old his boy-hood friends left him flat one by one. To this day none of them keep in touch with him. He is better off without them. We married after he got sick and pretty... -
Hi Elonwy: Been long time since we spoke, but I wanted to back up on your item....you met him at a panel! Please tell more...I've only recently started watching House. I was amazed that he is a Brit but can convert to USA accent so well. As a matter of fact, he actually sounds like he's from NJ, considering that is where the fictional teaching hospital...

I had a nodule & dr. said that when biopsy of thyroid is done, they sometimes don't get the diseased tissue & end up biopsying healthy tissue & the patient gets a false negative -- so they just took the half of the throid that had the nodule and now I take thyroid supplements for the rest of my life to reduce chance of growing new nodules.

I use in gluten-free Pantry bread mix, but it makes only a little difference. I add a few tablespoons into the flour mixture and increase water by maybe a tablespoon.
