Hi Walter, just remember that family = the only people that you didn't ask for and that you've got family here. I get along well with my parents, maybe because they don't visit me, I visit them. Just a thought. I think it's great that you went to work; keeping a routine will help you more than breaking it, at least it does for me when I've been down. ...

Hey, hey, that's gluteniah, if you's a maineah.

I am wondering what Joanne's blood test was? I've been off-line for a few days, so may have missed it. And....what is the actual difference between gluten intolerance and celiac? Shades of JerryK.

I appreciate your asking this, as I've kind of wondered after reading the board for a while what actually constitutes a celiac (and this may be tangential to what you're asking, Lisa). Is a celiac someone who was born that way, or someone who has had some kind of trauma and then had symptoms? Or is it some kind of standard that (perhaps not everyone) can...

ARCHIVED Super Simple Hot Dog Buns
miles2go replied to Guhlia's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thank ye, goddess! It is unusually warm here these last few days, more than a few coworkers were out grilling last night and they all seemed to think it righteous to cook hamburgers and hot dogs for the first grill and I too, am tired of those little tin-foil molds. Margaret -
ARCHIVED Do You Celebrate Your Celiac Diagnosis Day?
miles2go replied to gfgypsyqueen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Absolutely! And I got a kind of nebulous dx, so I celebrate that day in September and also the day I went completely gluten-free in January, so I get two days. We can eat anything we want, just as long as we know how to substitute. It is great to feel well! Partay on! :D -
Hi Joanne, I went through that uncomfortable stage too, when I didn't know what to call myself, since I was only diagnosed with wheat and other allergies by skin and blood tests and couldn't be tested other than genetically because I'd been gluten-light for around eight years. For a while I contemplated doing Enterolab, but the diet had proven itself...

I agree with Carla, my huge problem has waned a bit and age may play a factor in that, since I think that Carla and I are still both 29. And I still get shampoo in my mouth on occasion, so good advice there! The longer you've had the problem, the longer it will take to heal and just because you might have a fast metabolism, doesn't necessarily mean that...

ARCHIVED Ok, Ok, I Learned My Lesson...
miles2go replied to SunnyDyRain's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This one is easy! Stonyfield Organic plain in the 32 oz. containers in the winter, add your own yummies and save a couple of tablespoons to make your own from milk later (saving about half the cost if using organic milk) and then in the spring/summer/fall buy from your local farmer's market the sheep/cow/goat yogurt that they make. Pure heaven! Margaret -
I am one of those who skin-tested highly allergic to corn who also wonders about the effects of such and agrees that there is certainly not enough testing by the FDA or the other powers-that-be about this particular foodstuff. It peeves me that it isn't listed among the 8 most common allergens that are now required to be on food labels, because it is quite...

I have been that way since thru-hiking the AT twice 16 & 17 years ago, and that was about 15 years pre-diagnosis. Maybe all those AYCE's along the way helped my brain into thinking this way, but I still struggle with keeping weight on. What seems to work for me is eating all morning long and then another meal in the early afternoon. After that, I feel...

Yeesh, that is a bad day! You remind me of why I am so happy that I still paying a bit extra to be on a comp care plan where no one except myself orders tests for me. I learned the hard way about always keeping a stash, not just in my desk at work, but always with me. I went on a day-trip with a friend last fall and didn't bring enough food because we...

ARCHIVED Would You Worry About Cross Contamination With Marijuana?
miles2go replied to lorka150's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I sometimes take responsibility for things that I don't need to, so if this is the case, just ignore what I'm about to say, but I'm kind of laughing here. Last year, someone mentioned that they added protein powder to their smoothies. I remember who it was, but don't want to drag them into an argument...anyway, soon after that I was at the health food store... -
ARCHIVED Negative Tests, But Severe Anemia
miles2go replied to GFJan's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think mine was around 9 the last I was tested in late January and my doc said that I'd probably have to go about a year before getting it to something normal. We're in mid-April now and I'm feeling a heck of a lot better so, probably you should be thinking something long-term, although it does get gradually better unlike celiac healing, which seems to... -
A gluten-free foodie friend reminded me of something that we all probably know, but may have forgotten because of the brain fog. There are lots of great books that are mentioned on this forum from time to time and...you don't have to go out and buy them. Just visit your local library, whether on-line or in person and request said title. If the library...

ARCHIVED 10 Things I Hate About Celiac

No tears here, blueeyedmanda, we eyeball them free-range chickens next door daily. -
I am really hoping that explosive D in ASL is something along the lines of spelling out wheat and doing the tummy rub sign. Glad your daughter's catching onto ya! Margaret

ARCHIVED 10 Good Things About Celiac
miles2go replied to Mtndog's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
1. Redbridge will find it’s way to central Maine, or else I’ll get off my butt and use the beer brewing equipment that I’ve had for almost 6 months now. J 2. Ovaltine isn’t everything and there’s still chocolate and I might try to make my own phyllo dough one of these days. 3. Eating really good food that nature or myself has prepared. Cooking has actua... -
ARCHIVED 10 Things I Hate About Celiac
miles2go replied to Mtndog's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
1. Knowing that I was born a certain way, like everyone else and then earning stories about beings who may be undiagnosed gluten-intolerant for whatever reason. 2. Gluten sneaking into every processed product imaginable. 3. The FDA. 4. People who stood in line for hours on end in the past in Northern Europe for a product that probably wasn’t good for t... -
Hi angel42, Like you, I really never run a fever and like you, my stomach is killing me and has been bothering me on and off for a few days now and yesterday I threw up. I don't know where you are, but I think what I have is indeed a stomach virus, especially since I was in three doctor's offices and the hospital last week; I think I picked up something...

ARCHIVED Black Jelly Beans

Aw, don't be sorry about the UMaine thing, but thanks for the anthropological data anyway. And keep on keeping on with those Jelly Bellies. Goodness, there. -

The manufacturers that be will put wheat into anything. -
Hi lizardorb, I would suggest Cafe Nouveau in Bangor as a good stop for gluten-free dining if you're there at dinner. Lunch is not such a good call. Thistle's could also probable accomodate you; it's been a while since I was there and wasn't gluten-free at the time, but the food was fabulous. I'm guessing that Perri House could equally suffice. As...
