I eat at many "hole-in-the-wall" Mexican and South American places with no problems. Always cc possibility, I guess. I give the Celiac Quiz: Is your rice cooked in any type of broth? Please make sure it's just water. Is there any flour in your beans (sometimes used to make them serve more, go further)? Are your corn chips...

Onion Rings, Pizza, Betty Crocker, And Cuban
brendygirl posted a blog entry in Gluten Free Breeze (formerly Brendygirl) Blog
I found a house to buy, so since I'm moving out, might as well mess up the kitchen here....So I tried the beer batter onion ring recipe on this site, but the first "test" rings came out without the batter on very well, so I had a brainstorm and after dipping the raw rings in batter, I coated them in gluten-free Orgran bread crumbs. They turned out crunchy... -
I agree that Godiva is not gluten free. HOwever, I've eaten several times at the Cheesecake Factory and had no problems. I get the tacos without sauce or the seared tuna. I ask tons of questions and specify that I have many food "allergies".

I have family in Ft. Myers. We get gluten-free groceries at Ada's Natural Foods. We eat out at Bonefish Grill, since they have a gluten free menu. Other places that have been recommended but I haven't tried are Island Cow, Aurelio's Pizza, and Carraba's. I think Roy's Seafood would be good in Naples, not too far away. Enjoy your trip.

I always eat frostys. Never had a reaction. I don't eat any sort of potato or fries there, because cc. I only eat fries at Chic-Fil-A and In-n-out.

Bgf, Creep Shield, And Bone Edges
brendygirl posted a blog entry in Gluten Free Breeze (formerly Brendygirl) Blog
Funny to realize that going "against the grain" for years has opened my palate to foods I never would've enjoyed BGF (before gluten free). Baked goods with nuts. I liked some nuts BGF, but never baked into stuff. Now, I love Pamela's ch.chip cookies with walnuts and Trader Joe's Flourless Chocolate Walnut cookies, which taste more like brownies to me. ... -
ARCHIVED Vlasic Pickle Relish
brendygirl replied to violet2004's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I see a lot of possible culprits. First of all, many celiacs have trouble digesting lactose or whole cream or sour cream. Possibly due to my doctor misdiagnosing lactose intolerance, then I went off lactose, and in doing that, you lose the ability to digest it! I slowly re-incorporated it back in...I can drink milk, but I can't tolerate cream at all, only... -
ARCHIVED Kissing A Non-celiac
brendygirl replied to Sulevismom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think it happened to me. It wasn't a planned kiss, and we hadn't been eating, so I guess gluten wasn't on my mind that he may have eaten prior to the kiss and I should ask. -
I agree with the arm in the blender. I flew in to be a bridesmaid, having ordered the dress by phone, and it fit perfectly. I left it there and my mom wore it for a bachelorette party where everyone was to wear old bridesmaid dresses as a theme party. I'm known by my friends as "classy" and I was around all these girls who all smoked and cussed like...

ARCHIVED Need Opinions: Living On Campus Vs Living At Home
brendygirl replied to Ashley's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I lived in the dorms at a small private University, and it was an experience that cannot be matched. Like everything, there are pros and cons, but I'll tell you this: I know people who wish they'd lived in the dorms, but I have never met anyone who wishes they'd lived at home during college. The bonding is immense. Also, the college girls who have visited... -
ARCHIVED Your Favorite Paintings/artists?
brendygirl replied to C.S. Blogsmith's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosch. I almost got kicked out of a museum in Spain for having a friend take a picture of me by it (pics are allowed but the flash accidentally went off). On a recent visit to NYC, I saw a stage performance acting it out. It was very mind-stretching. -
ARCHIVED 5 Kitchen Essentials For A gluten-free Kitchen?
brendygirl replied to grnjellyshoes's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't use a toaster at all. I've been gluten-free for 3 years now. I have a ritual I do with the microwaving, where I defrost a slice or two of gluten-free bread and then cook for 15-20 seconds. I also fry the frozen bread in a pan with butter or spray butter, on recommendation of someone in my support group and it is DY-NA-MITE! My favorite gluten... -
ARCHIVED Struggling With Costs...tips?
brendygirl replied to inskababy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
At work, I signed up for the 125 Flex Spending Account where I don't get taxed on the money I spend on gluten free products above the price of regular products. I needed a note from my doctor saying I require gluten free products. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Salad Dressings
brendygirl replied to jkr's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use Private Selection poppyseed dressing. It's the grocery store brand. It's disributed by interamericanproducts. I order individual packets of Ken's dressings (some are gluten-free) from that website (forgot the name) where you can order individual packets of stuff and if you buy $20 worth, shipping is free. I read the labels and as long as they use... -
ARCHIVED Mascara Brands gluten-free?
brendygirl replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use Cover Girl pink and green, but there are many formulas, so I READ THE LABEL to make sure it's the kind with shellac and not wheat protein. I buy it when it's on sale 2 for the price of one. -
ARCHIVED Dior Makeup
brendygirl replied to Crayons574's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use Dior lipsticks and some mascaras. I read the labels. Some mascara formulas have wheat protein in them of many brands. My favorites are Benefit products, especially the Bad Gal eyeliner and Mr. Frosty highlighter stick (on the inner corner of the eyes and under the brow bone and a little on top of undereye concealer to bounce light off the dark areas... -
G1, Guys, And Glutenfreelosity
brendygirl posted a blog entry in Gluten Free Breeze (formerly Brendygirl) Blog
Bigg Papi is what the charm on his thick, gold chain necklace reads. Take away one g and you have his license plates. What can I say? He makes me laugh. So, I took him to my friend's house to a barbeque and it was funny. I begged him to tell everyone about how, being raised as a foster kid in NY, his siblings think he has big $ out here and call him... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else With Problems With Maybelline Eyeliner?
brendygirl replied to mamabear's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I wear the expensive pencil eyeliners from Benefit and the cheap ones from Prestige (made in Germany). I use Cover Girl mascara, but I have to make sure to get the formula with shellac and not wheat protein. I get them when they go on sale 2 for one. -
ARCHIVED Need Chick-fil-a Fries Feedback
brendygirl replied to tfrankenberger's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I hate to be Downer Debby, but I got cc'd at Chick Fil A. There was a fried zucchini ball or whatever at the bottom of my waffle fries once. It was a baaa-aaad thing. I shiver to think about it. And I agree about the bun, do not "peel chicken off the bun". You must not be very sensitive as far as reacting, because that would make me sick. Reaction... -
I tried it. It was ok. The crust was kinda spongy for me. Someone else said it's better reheated.

Dippin Dots: all but cookie and certain candy flavors Chick Fil-A: They have an online menu- I usually get a bunless chic. sandwich and AWESOME waffle fries! P.F. Chang's: AsianThey... -
My lofty expectations for the Celiac Conference were met! It was AWESOME! People just like ME! Vendors cooking and catering to ME, and chucking copious samples my way. (I did have to spit some in the trash, but there were some very tasty morsels as well.) Doctors delivering diatribes about dx and diarrhea and DQ8 and disease and deflated villi and developments...

ARCHIVED May Is Celiac Awareness Month
brendygirl replied to Lisa's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Thanks so much for posting! I sent the link to my whole email contact list. -
My celiac group leader's brother died of celiac complications a couple weeks ago. It's sad and it brings to mind how seriously we have to take our treatment, which is our gluten free diet. Today I read the thread here about Joe C, the rapper who died of celiac. It makes me so somber. I wish celiac was diagnosed quicker and more accurately, before it...

Last night Travel Dude came over for our indulgence night of American Idol, chili dogs (we pour Wendy's chili over Hebrew National lowfat hot dogs he bakes in the oven and I use Kinnickick gluten-free bun), and romancin. He also brought over Ruffles and (gluten-free) brownies from the pickup window at Outback Steakhouse, but I was too stuffed to eat mine...
