  1. Pammala's white cake mix has a recipe on the side for making it into a spice cake or carrot cake. Add some cream cheese frosting (Betty Crocker is gluten-free) and you've got a cake that EVERYBODY I know has loved. Delicious. IMO, you're better off letting people know ahead of time about the gluten problem. But you know the family and I don't. richard
  2. Unfortunately, no one can actually tell you how long after exposure your son's lesions appear. Just like with how long it takes to get better and how long internal smptoms appear or how long they last, it depends on the individual. richard
  3. Babs is right. Everybody is different so there's no one answer. I slowly started improving after about a week (partly because of the iron and other things I was being given) but it was weeks before I was really functional again. richard
  4. I'm assuming the poster was out with friends or family. I'd NEVER try to tell dining companions they couldn't eat gluten -- unless of course I never wanted to eat out with them again. richard
  5. Don't know for sure if they re the same but they certainly should be gluten-free. Rosemary is not an unusual flavor additive in poultry but it's not always listed as rosemary. richard
  6. Other than some weird "beer" cheese, every cheese I'm familiar with is gluten-free. But I've never heard of Bothwell. richard
  7. The ultimate proof for me is that the vast majority -- a huge percentage -- of folks with celiac eat any meat they like and are perfectly fine. In fact, on my doctor's orders I ate meat at every meal as I was recovering from undiagnosed celiac that nearly killed me, and yet I made a full and complete recovery after 11 days in the hospital and missing 10 weeks...
  8. I don't know of any food colors anywhere that have gluten. richard
  9. You "read" wrong. richard
  10. Well, if this is truly the whole story, then you sister sounds quite ill and in serious need of help. Her children are at risk for all kinds of problems. richard
  11. Gluten in newsprint is not something to be concerned about. Soy inks are indeed common. richard
  12. That looks a lot like my DH looked, but it's pretty hard to diagnose from a picture. richard
  13. I think eight days is too soon to really conclude much of anything. richard
  14. I have to agree with Sylvia. Artificial flavors just don't contain gluten that I know of. richard
  15. If you're in the U.S., then you have things completely reversed. If it IS wheat, it will say so, which is VERY, VERY rare. If it doesn't say wheat, then it's something else and safe, which is nearly always. richard
  16. Tell them about anemia, severe fatigue, and fogginess so bad that you can't function mentally. richard
  17. You cannot reproduce gluten that you've normally eaten, especially anything breadlike tha'st flaky and fluffy. But there are many tons of good things for people with celiac to eat. richard
  18. I am. 19 months. richard
  19. I know plenty of folks with celiac who use KC. richard
  20. It sounds like to me you're having symptoms with the aching, bad teeth, anemia, and so on. My father took dapsone for many years and a couple of times his DH just completely disappeared for an extended period of time -- even a couple of years one time. Then it came back. I was on dapsone for 20 years and my DH would wax and wane in severity. I'd try going...
  21. Krista, envision this. My symptoms also slowly built up, essentially taking decades to come to a head. But when it hit, it hit. Eleven days in the hospital after I was no longer able to walk on my own or even carry on a conversation, 10 weeks off work, months before I felt "normal." Believe me, you don't want to go there. richard
  22. This particular item would not be near the top of my list for CC concerns, but, yes, fast-food places in general are dangerous. richard
  23. No medical proof of this, but I'd tend more to agree with your doctor -- if you didn't have DH before and you've been strict for 3 months, it's unlikely this is DH. Maybe psoriasis? BTW, my father's DH came and went over the years even while he was still eating gluten (and iodine). Mine disappeared almost immediately when I quit gluten (but never avoided...

    ARCHIVED Argh

I'm sorry, but it's hard to believe you got glutened simply wiping your nose on your sleeve or a gulp of water at work. And any new folks, this simply in NOT something your average person with celiac has to worry about. richard
