It won't "kill" it because it isn't alive. An extremely high temp will in fact render the proteins harmless, but fryers don't get that hot AND anything that hot will also turn your food into an inedible black lump. richard

ARCHIVED Grrrrrrrr . . .
lovegrov replied to VioletBlue's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am sorry that you or others are allergic to soy. But in this case, BC set out to make a GLUTEN FREE product. The company did not promise a SOY FREE product. Somebody here posted an opinion suggesting that because of the soy, this product is not safe for people with celiac. This is most definitely not true -- it's safe for the majority of people with celiac... -
ARCHIVED Nestle Butterscotch Chips Got Me

Never heard of barley being hidden in spices and I have yet in 9 years to find rye being hidden in anything at all. Do you have some examples of this happening? richard -
ARCHIVED What Is The *purpose* Of Adding Flour To Everything?
lovegrov replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
In fact it does cost more to make some things gluten-free. In some things, the ingredients cost more. Just think how much xanthan gum is. Most other flours also cost more. And with other products it's a matter of economies of scale. It's cheaper per unit to make 100,000 of something than just 1,000 of them. As for soy sauce specifically, the wheat DOES... -
ARCHIVED Cheese Balls- Like The Hickory Farms Ones?

Generally speaking these are gluten-free, but to be certain you'd need to call or e-mail. I don;t see ingredients online. richard -
ARCHIVED Grrrrrrrr . . .
lovegrov replied to VioletBlue's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Obviously I can't answer that for certain but I can guess. The soy flour night be cheaper than something else they were using. Or, the gluten-free mix might not have been selling well enough and a taste/texture test showed that those who tried it liked the soy flour recipe better. My original post was reacting in part to this part of a post -- "The last... -
ARCHIVED Kroger Deli gluten-free Sign
lovegrov replied to lovegrov's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is not the case with Private Selection and Boar's Head beef. In another update, a second Kroger I checked slices JUST Private Selection and Boar's Head. They have Sara Lee but it's presliced and packaged elsewhere. richard -

And even if barley were included in the allergens, they don't have to list them at the bottom separately. They just have to be in the ingredients somewhere. richard -
ARCHIVED Kroger Deli gluten-free Sign
lovegrov replied to lovegrov's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
A clarification. I checked the Kroger my father went to and all of the deli meats and cheeses that they slice are Private Selection and the sign he saw and that I have now seen confirms that ALL Private Selection meats and cheeses are now gluten-free. So the slicer they use for those will be gluten-free. Other Krogers also have Boars Head meats and cheeses... -
ARCHIVED Omaha Steaks

Here is their current allergen list online. It notes not just wheat but gluten as well. Based on what I've seen there, I'd trust it: Open Original Shared Link As for the items Ms. C checked, stuffed sole and potatoes au gratin are pretty much ALWAYS going to have gluten commercially, and indeed the list says they do. I don't understand why stuffed baked... -
Kimbalou, fried rice ALWAYS has soy sauce. In commercial places, soy sauce pretty much always has wheat. AND Panda Express is most definitely NOT a place I would even attempt to eat. I know you're new at this, but a cardinal rule is that you check food BEFORE you eat it, not after. About the only way to eat Chinese commercially is to avoid anything that...

ARCHIVED Grrrrrrrr . . .
lovegrov replied to VioletBlue's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Last I looked the mixes said GLUTEN free. I'm sorry for those who can't tolerate soy or potatoes, but nowhere do I see the mixes guaranteeing soy or nightshade free. Most celiacs I know tolerate soy just fine, and, yes, a product that is free of wheat, rye, barley, and oats but has soy is in fact gluten free. If a mainstream product had to avoid every intolerance... -

ARCHIVED Kroger Deli gluten-free Sign
lovegrov posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I can't say this is universal at Kroger because I almost never get meat or cheese from the deli, but my dad saw a sign at a Kroger deli in Roanoke, Va., recently that said EVERYTHING they slice, deli meats and cheese, is gluten-free. No need to worry about CC on the slicer. richard -
There's no program I know of in the U.S. and I'm sure that won't change any time soon. I can afford to buy expensive specialty gluten-free foods but simply choose not to because I don't think it's worth it. I do buy pasta regularly and I get the Nut Thin crackers, but they aren't all that expensive. Every now and then I buy bagels or make something from scratch...

ARCHIVED Popcorn At The Movies
lovegrov replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Plain popcorn at the movies will always be gluten-free and the chance of CC is so minimal that I can't imagine anybody losing sleep over it. In addition, the largest maker of toppings in the U.S., Flavacol (sp?) has said its toppings are gluten-free. This is just my personal experience, but after years of searching and checking labels and calling, I've never... -
ARCHIVED Don't Revive Ancient Threads!
lovegrov posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, folks. I'm posting this strictly as my own opinion. Recently we've seen several threads that were more than six years old revived because somebody had a thought to add to them. New thoughts on any topic are always welcome, but when you revive a a thread from 2004, you're often reviving very old and inaccurate information, particularly since that was... -

As a guy, I'll join in the chorus. No matter how hard you tried, you weren't going to change him. In fact, in most cases a person like this becomes even MORE controlling after marriage and sometimes even violent. You would have been completely miserable and divorce would have been inevitable. richard -
ARCHIVED Vinegar
lovegrov replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Folks, malt vinegar is from barley, not wheat (although any grain can be malted). So a product with malt vinegar would NOT have to list wheat. But any time you see malt or malted and malt flavoring you have to assume it isn't gluten-free. richard
