    Generally speaking you're probably better off at a smaller college. The college I attended (pre-celiac days) has about 1,500 students and they are now very aware of diet restrictions, including celiac.     I wish I could tell you. Can you help your daughter pay for the blood panel? That would be somewhere in the hundreds of dollars. Can't say about the Thai food. Sometimes in the U.S. they include soy sauce that has wheat, even when the traditional Thai dish would not have soy sauce. You absolutely have to ask; you cannot assume. richard

    First, somebody in your family might have had celiac in the past but either it was never diagnosed as such or the symptoms were so mild the person who had it never needed to be diagnosed.     I'm not endorsing this, but the fact is that the VAST majority of people with celiac have or will cheat. I have not done so in 8 years, but I am no saint. richard

    I've had both and they weren't the slightest bit alike other than some itchiness (the DH was MUCH itchier). My DH was in the form of blisters filled with clear fluid, much like a burn. The itching was horrendous. Since going gluten-free, the DH is gone. My psoriasis is mostly these flaky patches that can also be itchy, but NOTHING even close to the itchiness...

    Again folks, "natural flavors" in meat MUST list anything that adds nutritional value. This, according to my phone calls to the USDA, includes any grain. If anybody has evidence to the contrary, please post it here. Do not just make a blind claim.     This is most definitely NOT what the USDA told me. When I called them, I was told all I had to do was read the ingredients because ANY grain added in ANY way had to be listed. What did they tell you? And I have NEVER found a broth or flavoring added to meat that contained undisclosed gluten. richard

    Call the company to be sure, but gum in general is gluten-free. Unless I see wheat or malt listed (and I can't think of one single gum where I've seen that), I don't worry about it. richard

    It's not because of gluten unless you ignored listed gluten. ALL gluten must be listed in meat. richard

    All meat must clearly list any gluten. If it doesn't say wheat, rye or barley, it's gluten-free. Separate rule from the allergen law. richard

    Your best bet is to call the company. Many will give you the CYA statement -- we don't put gluten in it but we can't guarantee our suppliers. When you hear that, you're almost certainly safe. The reality is that VERY few medications in the U.S. have gluten. It's really a very tiny risk for us. richard

    Well, if there were wheat, it would have to be listed. Can anybody provide specific examples of deli meats that they know DEFINITELY have gluten. Tell us which country. I remember a pickle loaf meat (ughh) that once had it (Boarshead), but the wheat in that has since been eliminated. richard

    I will get the regular flu shot (as I always do) but probably not the swine flu (I'm 54 and apparently have some resistance as a result). Neither decision has anything to do with celiac. richard

    Most don't because there's no official limit yet. But there's a requirement that all gluten be listed in meat. richard
