  1. IMO, Capt. Morgan's is gluten-free. Some manufacturers avoid saying it IS gluten-free because the U.S. has no gluten-free standard yet. If the barrels were "coated in wheat paste," I imagine they would say that. richard
  2. There's no brand I know of that doesn't have some gluten-free flavors. richard

    ARCHIVED "specialists"

Different tests have different levels, but on the most common one in the U.S. anything below 20 is considered normal. As for seeing a specialist, the GI is the specialist for this. You apparently have one who doesn't know about celiac. richard
  4. "Make sure it doesn't say "modified food starch" on the ingredients list. " In the U.S. modified food starch from wheat would have to list wheat. I guess that technically it could be made from barley or rye, but I've never seen it or heard of it. MFS is almost always corn or perhaps tapioca. richard
  5. I generally trust manufacturers that if they don't list wheat, it's not there or at least isn't supposed to be there. I also trust them if they tell me it's gluten-free even if it doesn't have that label. Because the U.S. doesn't have set standards for what's gluten-free yet, there are many things that are gluten-free but aren't yet labeled that way. Of...
  6. Because your daughter can function perfectly well with celiac, i can't imagine you can get any kind of benefits. In addition, the diet need not be expensive if you avoid the gluten-free substitutes or make your own from scratch. If you feed her food that's naturally gluten-free, it won't cost any more. I realize that with some things that might be easier...
  7. I can't remember ever seeing any evidence that how you eat will affect whether or not the baby has celiac. richard
  8. A quick search will give you more than you want to know. It's been in lots of stuff for a long time. This used to be a red flag ingredient for people with celiac, but now in the U.S. any wheat would have to be listed. "Hydrolyzed protein is protein that has been hydrolyzed or broken down into its component amino acids. While there are many means of achieving...
  9. No, you will not have an intestinal reaction simply from touching flour. For one thing, you don't absorb flour through your skin. richard
  10. Definitely call the caterer. They should be glad to help. That said, all of these COULD be gluten-free: Burgers Hot Dogs Steak Chicken Potato Salad Shrimp Cocktail Steamer Clams Corn on the cob Baked Potato richard
  11. In more than 7 years I've found just one hot dog that wasn't gluten-free, and that was Nathan's. The wheat in it is clearly marked. I've never found a regular marshmallow that isn't gluten-free. That's not a guarantee that there couldn't be CC. Few facilities are completely gluten-free, although a number of lines within the facility might be. In addition...
  12. I was so ill I was in the hospital for 11 days. I was relieved they found something and that it wasn't something fatal (lymphoma was one possibility). richard
  13. I ALWAYS crave these things!!! But if you didn't before I'm not sure why you would now. richard
  14. My anxiety about traveling continued for a quite a while and still pops up some 7 years later. My wife also has to point out every now and then that I'm hoarding/buying too much food, something I didn't use to do. Overal,l though, my mental state was much better in about a year. richard
  15. Your approach sounds pretty good. "Disease" is a bad word to be using now. Stress that this is something that's completely controllable by diet -- not medication or surgery. I think your idea to offer to bring your own is good, but if they offer to accommodate you, I think you should accept and keep your fingers crossed. The tough part here is that there...
  16. BTW, we went to a higher end place here and one of the options was a meal with a certain number of courses at a certain price. The chef made it up as he went along, but he also had only certain main ingredients on hand. We wanted to try it. I have celiac and my wife can't have shellfish. The chef came out and talked to us and it was apparent he was into the...
  17. While I cannot guarantee that every hot dog in the world is gluten-free, the only one I've found that has gluten in 7 years is Nathan's. And it very clearly lists wheat. This includes some really cheap and really red ones. richard
  18. Please do not take this as a criticism or anything of the sort. Kids do sometimes learn they can use any discomfort -- or even make one up -- as a reason to get out of school or to be closer to a parent. I know that my non-celiac daughter tried it a time or two. I have no idea about your situation, but thought I'd put it out there. richard
  19. If I've never been to any restaurant, I call ahead, and if a high-end place with a real chef does a good job, I'll go back without calling ahead. richard
  20. Those natural things might help some, but healing from RSF requires prompt treatment with antibiotics. The few people I've known who have had it all recovered but a couple were ill enough t be in the ICU. In those cases it wasn't diagnosed early. Good luck. richard
  21. gluten-free. It's a sugar. richard
  22. While might not be (although I have my doubts what to believe about what you think you have found, it sure as heck reads that way. The very best of any celiac research shows it exists and that gluten is the problem. richard
  23. I agree that it's all fine and good to explore various options, but I'd be very careful about telling people there's no such thing as celiac disease or that gluten isn't the problem. Reading stuff on the Internet, some of which is no doubt bogus (this is true in any subject), is a far cry from studying it scientifically. richard
  24. Eventually this will feel easy to you. Yes, the social part will always be tough, but feeling better is great. richard
  25. Sarah, I'm not usually on this thread, so you probably don't know me. But you absolutely need a lawyer for this. Do NOT give in to anything without professional advice. I have an SIL who had no idea anything was going wrong and then found out her husband had been having an affair for two years. For those two years he had also been hiding money and hiding...
