  3. This just popped up on the celiac listserv: Dear gluten-free friends; It is with sadness and a heavy heart that I share this news and ask for your support - one last time - for a dear, sweet lady - Bette Hagman. Bette Hagman is seriously ill. She is trying to be strong by is weakening quickly by this illness. We want Bette, the author of...
  4. "that list was pages long and barley malt was one of the things listed along with loads with chemicals and antibiotics." USDA says otherwise. They've told me more than once that barley MUST be listed if it is added to raw meat. richard
  5. I had DH and I absolutely do NOT react to gluten on the skin -- either in the gut or on the skin. I simply do not believe gluten is absorbed through the skin. richard
  6. Women who wear lipstick most certainly do swallow some. If I were a woman I would without question make sure my lipstick did not contain gluten. richard
  7. I've ridden Amtrak just once since diagnosis and my memory is there were a couple of gluten-free things in the dining car. The menu changes, though. I try to call them first.
  8. If this is truly DH you need dapsone. richard
  9. Might also look into bacterial overgrowth. richard
  10. Won't be any consolation to you, but it's NEVER happened to me. Although I take more calculated chances than I used to, I've never in nearly six years cheated in the way you've described (I took a sip of non-gluten-free beer one time). richard
  11. It does sound like DH and that means you are now symptomatic. In fact, being diagnosed by blood work AND biopsy means you are symptomatic because celiac has already damaged your small bowel. I'm stunned that anybody would tell you not to go gluten-free after positive tests. If it was your doctor who told you that, find a new doctor. You need to go gluten-free...
  12. "Chicken Broth will often contain barley malt as a flavoring and this does not need to be disclosed on the label." When the "broth" is in raw meat, such as poultry, barley would most certainly have to be disclosed. The USDA has had this rule for years now. Anything that adds nutritional value, and that includes all grains, must be listed. richard
  13. I'm so sorry. richard
  14. Just stay away. richard
  15. If the ingredients don't list gluten, it doesn't have it. The USDA requires any grain be listed in raw meat. richard
  16. Considering the blood tests and his symptoms, he's got it. Don't doubt your doctor. Get the biopsy if it'll help prove it to you. There's no question whatsoever that celiac can be triggered at any age. Mine happened at 44. My father was diagnosed at 70. richard

    ARCHIVED Is This Dh?

My DH was always in the form of blisters. They looked nothing like zits. And they itched like crazy. richard
  18. I never used them but there are other doctors who recommend exactly the same thing to all people who have just been diagnosed. richard
  19. I would also suggest that it might be best to take a break from college to heal. Stress can make any autoimmune disease worse. richard
  20. The celiac group at delphi forums has a fairly extensive list. Natural flavoring and broths are things you have to check into. If natural flavoring has wheat it has to be listed, so really your only concern is barley, and the risk of even that is pretty low. Call the company and ask. I've never found rye as a hidden ingredient in anything. One exception...
  21. You're not going to find MFS made from oats or rye, and I can't ever remember finding it made from barley. I can't even remember finding it made from wheat, but legally it can be. It's usually from corn and sometimes from things like potato and tapioca. I'm no expert in the food industry, but in my personal opinion, MFS is extremely low on our risk list....
  22. I would agree with your nutritionist, but I despise companies that use these CYAs. richard
  23. All first degree relatives should be tested but the 11-month-old is too young now. Maybe when she's two. BTW, that means you and the dad should be tested. richard
