Ice Cream Maker?

So a friend is bringing me some home made vanilla ice cream. She is using organic milk so there is no corn contamination from vitamin D fortification. But she just mentioned that she has used a recipe in the past that had flour in it. So my question is, can an ice cream maker that has had flour in it ever be cleaned well enough to prevent CC? I won't turn the ice cream down and hurt her feelings, but if it isn't safe I'll be giving it away later. (She's bringing it to my shop where I have no freezer so I'll be running home with it as soon as she brings it, while a friend watches the shop for a few minutes.)

But if it IS safe it'll be a great treat.

Honestly, if I thought my friend was capable of thoroughly cleaning her appliances AND she had made many things in it since the recipe

with the flour (so it has been washed many many times) I would say that I would eat it.

My ice cream maker has a metal bowl and a hard plastic paddle. I can't see where any "trapped wheat flour" could hide.

I have to ask though...what ice cream recipe would possibly contain wheat? Did she use cookies in it or something ? Just curious!

She said it was a vanilla recipe that contained actual flour. :(

hmm....that's unusual. I make vanilla bean all the time and it's just a custard base.

Flour in Vanilla Ice Cream?   Where's that puking smiley when I need it.

I agree that if it has been a while and it is thoroughly cleaned in between uses you should be fine.  Ice cream makers wouldn't be ideal if they had nooks and crannies for things to hide in and not get churned with the rest of the batch.  Almost all commercial ice creams are made on shared equipment, since there is no poofy flour factor going on, it is much easier to clean off.

I guess the recipe was this or something similar: Open Original Shared Link

Anyway, she doesn't like that recipe as much as the one she used on this stuff she made for me. This has half and half, milk, whipping cream, organic sugar, and vanilla. I'll be going home shortly and I'm going to have some. I'll let you know how things turn out.

I'm having SUCH a great day! Had delicious ice cream for breakfast, came to work and one of my students stopped in. He's showing SO much progress and MASTERED the new song I gave him only YESTERDAY! Then I was goofing around with his guitar and he told me I'm better than the best guitarist in town. (I'll take the complement!) And THEN a former "regular" who moved to Arizona a few years ago stopped in (he's on vacation here) and we played some music together.

My jaw pain has let up recently (don't worry, it'll be back  .) But the vitamins I found at Shopko are doing their job so my energy level is up. So all in all, today is a BEAUTIFUL day!

I would think that it would be okay as long as it was washed really good.

Yes.  Now, if you hit your finger with a hammer once, wouldn't you do your best not to do it again?  You have identified a direct connection between gluten and pain.  Gluten is your hammer.  Now you have to decide if you need a medical diagnosis.  Some countries have aid benefits tgat you can get if you have the diagnosis, but you must continue eating a gluten-normal diet while pursuing the diagnosis. Otherwise the only reason to continue eating gluten is social. There are over 200 symptoms that could be a result of celiac disease.. Celiac Disease and Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity  both cause multiple vitamin and mineral deficiency.  Dealing with that should help your recovery, even while eating gluten.  Phosphatidyl Choline supplements can help your gut if digesting fats is a problem,  Consider that any medications you take could be causing some of the symptoms, aside from gluten.

Welcome to the forum, @Ben98! If you have been consciously or unconsciously avoiding gluten because of the discomfort it produces then it is likely that your blood antibody testing for celiac disease has been rendered invalid. Valid testing requires regular consumption of generous amounts of gluten. The other strong possibility is that you have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease but does not have the autoimmune component and thus does not damage the small bowel lining. It is 10x mor common than celiac disease. There is currently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. Some experts in the field believe it can be a precursor to the development of celiac disease. Having one or both of the primary genes for developing celiac disease does not imply that you will develop active celiac disease. It simply establishes the potential for it. About 40% of the population has the genetic potential but only about 1% develop active celiac disease.

TTG blood test and total IGA tested on many occasions which have always remained normal, upper GI pain under my ribs since 2022. I had an endoscopy in 2023 which showed moderate gastritis. no biopsy’s were taken unfortunately. genetic test was positive for HLADQ2. extreme bloating after eating gluten, it’ll feel like I’ve got bricks in my stomach so uncomfortably full. the pain is like a dull ache under the upper left almost like a stitch feeling after a long walk. I am just wanting some advice has anyone here experienced gastritis with a gluten issue before? thank you

"Conclusions: The urinary iodine level was significantly lower in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis, and iodine replacement may be important in preventing osteoporosis"  Body iodine status in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis Low iodine can cause thyroid problems, but Iodine deficiency will not show up in thyroid tests.  Iodine is important for healing, its job is to kill off defective and aging cells (Apoptosis). Skin, brain fog, nails, muscle tone all inproved when I started taking 600 mcg (RDA 150 - 1000 mcg) of Liquid Iodine drops. Some with dermatitis herpetiformis, Iodine exacerbates the rash.  I started at 1 drop (50 mcg) and worked up to 12 drops, but I don't have dermatitis herpetiformis.
