Are You Happy?

Silly question, right?  Maybe not.

hap·py adjective \ˈha-pē\

1 feeling pleasure and enjoyment because of your life, situation, etc.
2 showing or causing feelings of pleasure and enjoyment
3 pleased or glad about a particular situation, event, etc.

I realized lately that I'm happy. I think I was just too busy complaining and feeling sorry for myself to see it before.

1:  Yes.  I'm alive for one, I am able to enjoy the company of others, am able to walk and go places, can talk and express myself and help others and see beauty all around me.  I have a roof over my head, enough money to keep the roof and provide food and transportation to go where I want.

2:  Yes.  I can make others smile, empathize with others, offer sound advice, make other feel good about themselvs and take joy from all around me.

3:  Yes.  I'm alive works for this one too.  I can draw and paint.  Listen to music and dance.  Feel the wind on my face, feel the cool rain, be cozy in the winter in front of the fireplace and spend time with family and friends.

You can't feel happy without the sad or there is nothing to compare it to.

Take a long look at your life, are you happy?

Not anymore... Analyzing my life makes me unhappy! Lol

But making stupid jokes makes me happy! So I guess I am back to happy!

GF Lover Rising Star

  Your Unicorn makes me happy too.   :D

kareng Grand Master

It makes me happy to change my signature every month or so and to have a little picture to go with it!

I have lost all of my family - mother, father, husband, sister, grandparents of course, and quite a few close friends. I never had kids. I am basically alone in the world.

But I moved to the place I have always belonged (but didn't know it) ten years ago. Since then I have been happier than I've ever been in my life. I opened a business and spend my days doing what I love. I have made new and very close friends.

I guess we're not supposed to talk religion here, as on most websites, but I will say I am closer to my Lord than I have ever been. That makes me worry a lot less because I know it's all in His hands.

And I have the key to happiness. That key is gratitude. You can't be unhappy and be grateful at the same time. I'm gratefull that I had the best family anyone could ever hope to have. A lot of people didn't. I'm grateful for every single thing that ever happened in my life because it made me who I am and brought me to the place I am now.

My Dad had very bad asthma that eventually killed him. As his health got worse and worse he found he couldn't do a lot of the things he used to do and love. He said, "Hey, I already had a chance to do those things. Now that I can't do them it frees up time to learn new things." No matter what life throws my way I know that if I can keep that attitude I will always be grateful, and be interested and engaged with life. That will keep me happy until it's time to check out.

I'm glad to see other people are happy. :D I know I am. Life is far from perfect, but I'm doing something I love, I have a decent doctor helping sort out my health, another decent one treating my pain condition, and an awesome husband who takes really good care of me. Well, I think we take care of each other. My girls are both headed out to live in the dorms at college this month for the first time, one to be a teacher and one an engineer. Other than the fact that I'm broke as hell, life couldn't be better. But who doesn't want more money?

Oh... and comic con is in just under 5 weeks. It's so close now that I get so excited I can't sit still thinking about it. And we're getting Eve Myles AND John Barrowman.

85790.gif18628.gif85790.gif

My husband keeps pointing out that John Barrowman is gay. I keep pointing out that Captain Jack Harkniss will flirt with literally anything alive. I'm not deterred.

Loved your post Bartful.  PGIJ! (Praise God in Jesus name!)

Oh yeah, there was a question...

But first an astute obsirvation.  Crayon, u didn't really need to tell us about the signature changes every month, now did u?  :D  We fingered that one out all by ourselves, really... :)

Yes, I'm happy.  In the morning I wake up and thank God for bringing me through another night.  He doesn't havter do that after all.  I gots a gray cat named Muffin that keeps my lap warm too.  And relatives that are mostly on speaking terms as long as I am at a good distance.  When I move closer tho we'll see!  The Lord my God is a mighty God and keeps me and blesses me.  And I am not suffering from adrenal fatigue since it doesn't exist.  And I get more selenium now... :)

Colleen it's great that you are enjoying your art making.  I haven't been making art for a while but I may get started again after I move.  It's sure fun stuff.

Adalaide, bring me a back a sonic screwdriver and I'll send you a dead mouse courtesy of Muffin, the furry hunter.  Capn' Jacks morals are a little too loose for my taste tho.

I completely agree with the sentiment that you can create your own happiness even if your life is full of chaos.  My life story is full of tragedies and terrible things, and in my current state I have a number of terrible illnesses to deal with.  The way I cope is looking at the positive.  If you don't know how to do this, please do the most loving thing you can do for yourself and seek counseling.  It can be hard to be happy when a lot of things are going bad, but in the end it teaches you what truly matters.

Hey Paul,  I've turned my attention more toward painting now.  I really love it.  I completely lose myself for hours and it feels wonderful.  I just finished painting three 5 x 7 Christmas Cards for this year.  I'm going to color copy them and send out instead of doing all individual but I can still individualize the writing on the copy.  Are you moving before Christmas?  Send me your address again.

We have a very happy life. We have our strong faith in God and we have a number of dear friends who we love and enjoy spending time with and we have a close knit church family who is there for us as well. Also, I have my health. Though it's a difficult diet to follow, I'm so thankful that I found out relatively early in life that I couldn't tolerate gluten, it's been a real blessing to watch my physical and mental health improve since going gluten free 4 1/2 years ago.

Yesterday, we went with our friends who have 6 kids to a water park. After spending some time with  everyone, the parents of the 6 kids went off for awhile to have a date and some alone time, and we watched their kids as well as ours. Their kids are well behaved and a real joy and it's delightful to have close friends who we can really spend quality time with.

My kids are growing up so much too! (My kids are almost 8, 5, and 2) It's fun to see all the new things that they learn. My oldest is going into 3rd grade and I'm looking forward to another great homeschooling year. :)

Most moments I choose to be happy...spent too much time sick to sweat the small stuff ... hell I don't really sweat the big stuff any more as long as I've got my family and friends that remind me what's important and make me laugh...all is good : )

"spent too much time sick to sweat the small stuff ... hell I don't really sweat the big stuff any more as long as I've got my family and friends that remind me what's important and make me laugh...all is good : )

2nd best advice I ever got --came from my friend Tommy:

"Don't sweat the small stuff...ah hell,  everything's small stuff, Gin." ^_^  smart guy.

Best advice ever--from the hubs who said;

"99.9% of the shyte we worry about never comes to fruition...no point in worrying in advance," which was the same as my Gramma's "don't borrow trouble".

They are both right.....total waste of time. We use up all our energy on "maybes and what ifs" , so that when the real shyte hits the fan, we're too burned out.

I already had the "worst that could happen" happen....so, now, I just live each day....one at a time. Each day is a gift. Small joys in the most unexpected places, people and  things...

Enjoy each moment as it comes....ooooh...hold on....oh, look! the sunset...gotta go watch it.   ^_^ caio

Love you guys!!

When I started reading this thread, I wasn't happy but it has made me realize that I have plenty to be happy for.  I finally, after all these years, know what is wrong with me.  That in turn led to the diagnosis of my daughter so hopefully she will never have to suffer like I have.  I have two amazing kids, amazing parents, a few damn good friends, and the best boyfriend a person could ask for.

Now if only that pot of gold would show up at the end of my dream rainbow, things would be perfect.

still early here....and quite warm when i leave my igloo...so I've got one word that should be good for a few giggles:

Cannonball!

Adalaide Mentor

I love that song! And as an added bonus it always makes me smile when I remember how much it irritated my mother.

After my entire life fell apart I was completely and utterly miserable. In a moment of perfect clarity I realized that I could choose to be happy. And so I did.

I don't sweat the small stuff. But I also make sure to value the small stuff because it's those little things that we forget about that can remind us we're happy. I noticed last week that somehow a marigold is growing in the middle of a row of my vegetables. I have no idea how, I've never planted flowers at all in my veggie garden but there it is with one little flower on it. And every night I go out to turn on the water it always makes me smile.

Hello, @asaT, I'm curious to know whether you are taking other B vitamins like Thiamine B1 and Niacin B3.  Malabsorption in Celiac disease affects all the water soluble B vitamins and Vitamin C.  Thiamine and Niacin are required to produce energy for all the homocysteine lowering reactions provided by Folate, Cobalamine and Pyridoxine.   Weight gain with a voracious appetite is something I experienced while malnourished.  It's symptomatic of Thiamine B1 deficiency.   Conversely, some people with thiamine deficiency lose their appetite altogether, and suffer from anorexia.  At different periods on my lifelong journey, I suffered this, too.   When the body doesn't have sufficient thiamine to turn food, especially carbohydrates, into energy (for growth and repair), the body rations what little thiamine it has available, and turns the carbs into fat, and stores it mostly in the abdomen.  Consuming a high carbohydrate diet requires additional thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  Simple carbohydrates (sugar, white rice, etc.) don't contain thiamine, so the body easily depletes its stores of Thiamine processing the carbs into fat.  The digestive system communicates with the brain to keep eating in order to consume more thiamine and other nutrients it's not absorbing.   One can have a subclinical thiamine insufficiency for years.  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so the symptoms can wax and wane mysteriously.  Symptoms of Thiamine insufficiency include stunted growth, chronic fatigue, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi (diarrhea, abdominal pain), heart attack, Alzheimer's, stroke, and cancer.   Thiamine improves bone turnover.  Thiamine insufficiency can also affect the thyroid.  The thyroid is important in bone metabolism.  The thyroid also influences hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, and menopause.  Vitamin D, at optimal levels, can act as a hormone and can influence the thyroid, as well as being important to bone health, and regulating the immune system.  Vitamin A is important to bone health, too, and is necessary for intestinal health, as well.   I don't do dairy because I react to Casein, the protein in dairy that resembles gluten and causes a reaction the same as if I'd been exposed to gluten, including high tTg IgA.  I found adding mineral water containing calcium and other minerals helpful in increasing my calcium intake.   Malabsorption of Celiac affects all the vitamins and minerals.  I do hope you'll talk to your doctor and dietician about supplementing all eight B vitamins and the four fat soluble vitamins because they all work together interconnectedly.

Hi Jane: You may want to try the D3 I now take. I have reactions to fillers and many additives. Sports Research, it is based in the USA and I have had no bad reactions with this brand. The D3 does have coconut oil but it is non GMO, it is Gluten free, Soy free, Soybean free and Safflower oil free.  I have a cupboard full of supplements that did not agree with me -  I just keep trying and have finally settled on Sports Research. I take NAKA Women's Multi full spectrum, and have not felt sick after taking 2 capsules per day -  it is a Canadian company. I buy both from Amazon. I wish you well in your searching, I know how discouraging it all is. Florence.

highly unlikely  NOTHING and I mean NOTHING else has ever caused me these kinds of symptoms I have no problem with dates, they are a large part of my diet In fact, I eat a very high fiber, very high vegetable and bean diet and have for many years now. It's considered a whole foods plant based or plant forward diet (I do now eat some lean ground turkey but not much) I was off dairy for years but recently had to add back plain yogurt to meet calcium needs that I am not allowed to get from supplements (I have not had any problem with the yogurt)   I eat almost no processed foods. I don't eat out. almost everything I eat, I cook myself I am going to keep a food diary but to be honest, I already know that it's wheat products and also barley that are the problem, which is why I gradually stopped eating and buying them. When I was eating them, like back in early 2024, when I was in the middle of moving and ate out (always had bread or toast or rolls or a sub or pizza) I felt terrible but at that time was so busy and exhausted that I never stopped to think it was the food. Once I was in my new place, I continued to have bread from time to time and had such horrible joint pain that I was preparing for 2 total knee replacements as well as one hip! The surgery could not go forward as I was (and still am) actively losing calcium from my bones. That problem has yet to be properly diagnosed and treated   anyway over time I realized that I felt better when I stopped eating bread. Back at least 3 yrs ago I noticed that regular pasta made me sick so I switched to brown rice pasta and even though it costs a lot more, I really like it.   so gradually I just stopped buying and eating foods with gluten. I stopped getting raisin bran when I was constipated because it made me bloated and it didn't help the constipation any more (used to be a sure bet that it would in the past)   I made cookies and brownies using beans and rolled oats and dates and tahini and I LOVE them and have zero issues eating those I eat 1 or more cans of beans per day easily can eat a pound of broccoli - no problem! Brussels sprouts the same thing.   so yeh it's bread and related foods that are clearly the problem  there is zero doubt in my mind

Thank you for your post, @nanny marley It is interesting what you say about 'It's OK not to sleep'. Worrying about sleeping only makes it much harder to sleep.  One of my relatives is an insomniac and I am sure that is part of the problem.  Whereas I once had a neighbour who, if she couldn't sleep, would simply get up again, make a cup of tea, read, do a sudoku or some other small task, and then go back to bed when she felt sleepy again.  I can't think it did her any harm - she lived  well into her nineties. Last week I decided to try a Floradix Magnesium supplement which seems to be helping me to sleep better.  It is a liquid magnesium supplement, so easy to take.  It is gluten free (unlike the Floradix iron supplement).  Might be worth a try.

It could be a fructan intolerance? How do you do with dates?  https://www.dietvsdisease.org/sorry-your-gluten-sensitivity-is-actually-a-fructan-intolerance/
