Discomfort After Eating Oats - Is It A Problem With Avenin Or The Fibre?

Hello

I am living in the UK and we are about to celebrate "St Andrew's Day" the Scottish way with a gluten free haggis.  Having at first not been able to go near an oat since diagnosis I have noticed in recent months the odd oat biscuit seems to be OK although this week I am noticing I have discomfort in my stomach, and a sort of general soreness in my abdomen, having eaten a dozen!  Reminds me of the good old days pre-diagnosis.

Going back to St Andrews Day, oats are a key ingredient in haggis and my Scottish friend has managed to source a gluten-free variety, which I am hoping to eat.   I can live with this discomfort but what I am wondering is how do I know if I am one of the small number of celiacs who have a problem with avenin?  Is the only way of finding out a blood test? Or is it, what my nutritionalist seems to think, that I have a problem with this particular type of fibre.  I do encounter a similar sort of pain after eating lentil soup so maybe?

Many thanks

Hi Cristiana,

I don't have any answers...not very helpful of me I know. But I wanted to share that since my diagnosis I have tried oats on 3 separate occasions with bad results each time. I miss oatmeal...especially on cold mornings.

I know... me too.  And flapjack - if you have that in the States?   It is difficult to know whether we have this problem with avenin or whether our stomachs are still sore.

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
