I just wanted to point out that yes, it IS possible for the human body to live on very little (such as a banana and some water). Most women, at some point in their lives will do it, and do it SO SUCESSFULLY that they can create a healthy baby at the same time.

Morning sickness!!! Most women have it during pregnancy, with many not being able to keep anything down for days at a time.

Most of the women on my mom's side of the family (except for me thank goodness) actually had hyperemesis during all their pregnancies. Hyperemesis is morning sickness that lasts 24/7 for the whole nine months. All my mom was able to keep down on a consistent basis was saltines. But she'd eat anyway, just hoping that for the couple minutes something would stay in her stomach, somehow, some of the nutrition was getting to me.

So, yes, I believe that a person can survive by eating just bananas. The human body is designed to make every attempt to survive by any means available.

MSFL, I hope you start feeling better soon. I'm glad you've joined us here.

:)

Amusing!

All

THings have not got much worse one good thing have happened and one bad thing. I lost my job a while back due to my ex calling and trying to stir up conflicts at work. However, i just got a new job and that feels great. The bad part , i offically is from tonight homeless :-(

That means no computer or internet for a while and i can just read the messageboard at work. However.

The celiacs is no change. Still the same situation. I got some fluids from the store and could keep it down due to the spoon size i used.

I have connected the celiacs with the level of stress now when im more focused on it. Its alot more "activity" in the stomach when the stress hits.

Im trying to stay away from all the gluten free food. But at the same time i dont know how it going to be for some 5 days before i get my paycheck so i can rent a place.

Well thank god the weather in Florida is getting warmer again...

Hang in there MSFL- That's great that you got a job! Maybe things will start to look up for you. Do you have a friend you can stay with?

Guest nini

maybe you could contact your local Celiac support group chapter and see if anyone has any ideas for you. It might help to talk to some people in your area. Are you in Miami?

Hi MSFL:

I don't know what the social safety net is like down in Florida, but is there a shelter you can go to that has resources to get you some social assistance and help you find subsidized housing? You need to do what you have to to make sure you don't take steps backwards (ie losing this job due to not having any place to sleep, etc.) Perhaps the shelter might have a doctor who volunteers his services there and he might be able to point you in the right direction for the case you need......

Keep up updated.....

Good Luck!

Just pointing out a quite amazing co-incidence, nothing more......

I've read on another thread or celiac forum where one man was prescribed a round of steroids to get the inflammation in his intestines to settle down so that he could begin healing from his celiac. I'm sorry that this thread created such a ruckas; I've been on this forum for 5 months now and am really embarassed by some of the postings. On average, the people here are friendly and very helpful. And they are also very knowledgeable. I've learned more from this forum than I had on my own in the past nine years when I developed celiac. On the plus side - I'm glad to hear that you haven't quit trying, that you have always looked forward and have even found a new job! Congratulations and remember, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Despite the bizarre turn this thread has taken we're pulling for you MSFL. Some of us have been in your shoes and survived. This is happening for a reason that is not clear right now. Keep going and it will get better.

MSFL- We are all rooting for you! i'm glad you found a place to stay last night. Pride is atough thing in general, but especially with illness. I tend not to want to ask for help either but after a year or so of dealing with this, I've realized that sometimes you haver too. And when you're feeling better, then you can give back.

The most important thing right now is getting your health back. I too have heard of people doing a round of steroids so that they could heal.

Hang in there and keep us posted. I am sorry this thread went so awry- let's give it back to you. This really is an INCREDIBE group of people. Best, B

Hi MSFL:

How did the visit go last night with your friend's brother who is a doctor? Hope it went well.....

I have heard quite often actually about people doing a round of steriods to get things under control and I have heard many positive things about this treatment. Perhaps it could be an option for you in order to avoid incurring any additional medical expenses (other than just filling the prescription). Perhaps your friend's brother will be able to help you out in that dept......

Keep us posted!

Dear, Dear MSFL--

My heart goes out to you and your situation.

I have some ideas for you but will wait to hear from you and see what the friends dr. brother had to say.

I PRAY he can help you. I can relate to not eating because your so neasous and it flies right through..I was like that for 2 months.

But--- you must EAT. If you don't anything you try to eat will fly right through you.

My chiropractor told me to use something called benefiber(I MUST CK THIS OUT)---it's a power that makes a clear liquid to drink and slows down the digestive process. I think I even have a free c/o for it I could send you. It's like $8.00+ but I'll ck first to get the EXACT name of the product becasue some of them in this line have gluten.

There is the BRAT diet...where all you eat for 4 days is Bananas, rice, applesause, toast (now that can be a problem because the breat is so $$) This will get the digestive system to start working so it can start excepting food. This is what they fed to patients at my hospital. Anyway, you need some dr to help you...we are here for you emotionally and to help educate you but your first priority, as I see it, is to get to urgent care or this friends dr and get some professional medical support.

WE ARE HERE FOR YOU

HANG IN THERE--PLEASE KEEP US POSTED.

Wow, I am totally stunned. I slip away from this forum for 2 weeks only to come back and find an unimaginable uproar? What was the big deal? So what, this guy needs help, as many of us did when we first got here. Business as usual on this forum.

Did someone mainline a bunch of gluten into Celiachap's bloodstream? That's the only reason I can think for this vitriol.

Stef - you rock. Absolutely no offense taken - I agree with you on this wholeheartedly.

MS - I hope you are doing ok. I will be thinking about you. What you are going through is very rough and I hope you can get some answers. Not all Americans are so unfriendly.

I've had a rough weekend and was looking for something to cheer me up. This is freakin' depressing.

Chill.

I know, and I was gone only 4 days. How's the new job going Stephanie? I'm hoping MSFL hasn't given up on us, I sure hope he gets relief and his health back soon.

My recent blood tests were excellent, and the report reads, “Results do not support a diagnosis of celiac disease.”

As far as this thread: That person's first few postings didn't sound right. Armetta initially agreed with me.

If you'd read his postings as they came, objectively, you may have been skeptical as well. I've seen a lot of scammers, hypochondriacs, strays, and other types over the years that join boards - complete with fantastic claims of medical catastrophes and stories of how their lives were destroyed by "evil" spouses, the United States Government, and other alleged wrongdoers. If the postings in question had not been blatantly melodramatic, I wouldn't have questioned them. The claim to be living on a single banana a day did not ring right, and other statements were also suspicious-sounding.

I am not heartless regarding legitimate problems and suffering. I believe my posting history shows that.

Hi all again..

Back at work again so i have a internet connection.

The friends brother did not have any solutions but promised to call around. However he told me i had to go to the hospital because i was dehydrated.

So i have been at the hospital again ........ this sucks... they did the same thing again. Fluids. nasua meds and some pain meds. They took a normal x-ray and saw nothing that was not normal. So 3 in the morning they let me out again.

Celiachap.. One banana is all i can eat at the current time. Its not a fantasy, but i think its a part of being scared to eat and then run to the bathroom. Banana does not make me do that. When you are living on a budget as i do.. you cant do much. Thank god my court date against my ex is coming up the 25th.

As of right now i have given up to get help from the heathcare. Seems like celiac is something that Dr dont know anything about or dont really understand the symptoms and the treatments.

MSFL- The most important thing you can do right now is drink lots of liquids- water, Gatorade or Pedialyte. Pedialyte is designed for children to keep them hydrated when they are sick and you can get it over the counter at a drug store. I don't know how much it costs but if you are budgeting for food, try to budget this in. And rest, make sure you rest.

I understand your fears of having to run to the bathroom, but you have to eat something besides bananas (although bananas do have lots of good nutrients). Try the BRAT like someone else mentioned before- bananas, rice, applesauce and the T stands for toast but forget about that for now. The T can also stand for tea so maybe try some decaf Lipton. You've GOT to stay hydrated.

Will you get health insurance with this job?

You know we are all rooting for you!

Hi MS--I've been following your story and everybody had such good advice and suggestions that I could't think of anything else to add. I did want to say that I hope things begin to turn around for you. The new job is a great start. I completely understand why you only feel comfortable eating only banana. I had the urgency also before I went gluten-free. One food that I could eat during that time was Cream of Rice. It's cheap, and easy to find at a regular grocery store. You can make it in a bowl, in a microwave, or in a pan--whichever's easier for you (all you add is water). You can top it with the banana. Like Bev said, liquids are very important--especially now that you aren't absorbing much. Not doing so can be hard on your kidneys. Keep in touch with us--we're all behind you!

I am so glad you posted to give us an update. It's too bad the friend's brother couldn't have been more help to you. Have you given any thought to trying to add potatoes to your diet? Potatoes are my safe food, the only one that doesn't hurt me when I am in pain......

Keep us updated.......

The recommendation for Pedialyte is a good one. You can get it at any drugstore and it is an over the counter liquid. I existed on that for one month. My husband dried up the supply at every drug store within a 10 mile radius. I could not even keep dry toast down. The drug stores do have a generic brand that is cheaper, but I threw it up - so we kept to the pedialyte. At first I could only keep a couple of spoonfuls down, but was finally able to keep a full glass down, but that took about 3 days. I was also severly dehydrated.

And Celiachap, yes I questioned the initial post at first, but I did not go into all the type of comments you made. I personally found your attitude deplorable. To quietly question the initial post is one thing, but then to go on as you did, is quite another.

When I had questioned the first posting, I had forgotten about brain fog, until someone else brought it up. And then I could totally relate. 10 days before my diagnosis I had insisted on a colonoscopy and completely forgot to take the enema pills - remembered the enemas, but not the pills. I had had many other colonoscopies in the past and certainly knew the procedure. Just did not have a brain at that point in my life. To say the doctor was more then displeased would be a mild statement LOL. My GP and I have decided that my next colonoscopy will be by a different doctor LOL.

It is important MSFL that you get vitamins and nutrients into your body. I spent MONTHS without any staying with me and my brain was greatly affected. Part of it has come back. But, I am not where I was by a long shot. Big IQ and big vocabulary went bye bye. You have to feed your brain cells as well as your body. GOOD LUCK.

I sincerely hope you feel better!

@MegRCxx, it is common for people with celiac disease to have other food intolerances as well. Most common offenders are oats (even gluten free oats) and dairy. Soy, eggs and corn are less common but not rare. So, factor into your consideration.
    • MegRCxx
Thank you @Scott Adams!! I will definitely have a read through these! If anyone is curious to what i had eaten and am worried about it was the tescos finest frozen bourginoun and creamy mash, only allergen stated was milk but it does contain yeast extract which i am aware can be a bit of an odd one. Once again thank you 🙏🏻

The short answer is that it would be good for you to learn more about how to read labels, but sticking to looking for "gluten-free" on packaged foods is a great place to start. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):    If you have some time for a good read, here is chapter 1 of a full book published on Celiac.com that deals with the social aspects of celiac disease:
    • MegRCxx
I have recently started a gluten free diet (waiting for confirmation via endoscope biopsies) I had started to reduce after the biopsy and then had a McDonald’s which confirmed to me my suspicions so decided to go full gluten whilst on holiday as i wanted to enjoy myself, since being back i have noticed that i have got increasingly more anxious due to feeling sick when i had accidentally eaten some on holiday. And not im reading labels worrying if everything doesnt state is gluten free but the ingredients look like they check out may still have gluten in.  Im panicking myself making myself feel worse and seem to be at a bit of a loss, i dont know anyone else with coeliac disease and am finding it all quite overwhelming. any advice is greatly appreciated:)
    • Scott Adams
We've done some articles on this over the years: https://www.celiac.com/search/?q=colleges&quick=1&type=cms_records2 You might also check College Confidential or Reddit’s r/Celiac for firsthand student experiences. Some schools, like the University of Arizona and Oregon State, are known for their allergy-friendly dining halls—calling their nutrition services directly can give you specifics. If you’re touring campuses, ask about dedicated prep spaces, ingredient labeling, and student support groups. A guide focused solely on this would be so useful—maybe someone here has found one?
