Celia.....I thought you're joke was pretty good!

Andrea,

You can find those Capri pants everywhere....I've been living in them the past 2 summers. A couple weeks ago I got a couple new white ones that are really wide-legged....like bell bottoms but they are capris. Everyone loves them and they are totally comfy. OMG...I love clothes!!! :D

Ummm...there was other stuff I wanted to reply to but now I cant remember.

Well....I gotta get my butt outside....for reals this time. ;)

I had some time to waste so I'd already checked out johnnyrivers.com :lol: I recognize a couple of the songs. I wish there were more pictures, there really aren't that many...

, yeah I live on the wild side :lol::lol: (<---joking :lol: )

Julie - - now you know - - Not something I tell most people and now, well guess I"ve told the whole world..... You can find more pictures if you go to his chatboard, click on some of those posts and people have put photos up. He actually is very sexy and a very good performer the few times I saw him.

Yup, you wild girl, I like some of the aging rockers myself......but refer some of the aging actors actually....

I'm not sure about Amish and facilities. I do know they don't have modern conveniences...cars, electricity, maybe phone. The people in your community are probably mennonites which are like amish but not so conservative. It is actually a mennonite homeschool program that I will be using. Don't kick me out but I tend toward the more conservative side now. I don't wear bonnets though and I don't impose my dress on anyone else. I actually saw some cute wide legged capri type pants when I went to campmeeting, more of the loose fit if you shopping gals can tell me where to find them...I'd like to pick some up. :P I have a baseball style hat somewhere...don't know where it got to. I gave all my Mariner hats to the boys over the years (Mitch's boys) and only have an Amy Grant and my horse 4h hat left. I wonder where the horse hat is too.

Let's just say our farm can be any dress style people are comfortable with...as long as they are dressed.

Yes,

Andrea lets have them be dressed please.! <_< I joined my husbands church when were married, it is Mennonite. The most progressive of all, the ones you have seen while shopping are probably Pennsylvania Dutch Mennonite or black bumper Mennonite Or Old Mennonite. All of the groups are offshoots of the Amish who wanted to progress somewhat. Ours is known as the "Peace Church", we do missionary work either sending out or supporting. We also founded MDS (Mennonite Central Committee) and send people to disaster areas to fix up buildings & whatever needs done. In the winter we had groups going down to Louisiana to work several times, one fellow was manager of work projects there. Not bragging, just telling. :)

Andrea, I like your picture and you have good looking children!! evie

Andrea - great picture! - the pants you're looking for for your Amish home school :P are probably culottes, you can find them everywhere. I'm particularly fond of Marshall's for shopping, give it a try. If we do see you wearing a bonnet in your avatar, we'll be concerned.....oh, guess we woudn't see your avatar any more as you'd no longer be allowed to have a COMPUTER.......

Went back to sleep for two more hours and now feel guilty. Ah well, it's Sunday, my favorite day, and that's allowed and obviously I skipped church today  that part, I don't like. LOVE my church.

:lol::lol::lol:

Actually the mennonites aren't as strict as the amish. They are more modern at least with conveniences. I won't be wearing a bonnet any time soon. :)

Thanks for the tip on the culottes....I'll look for them...they look comfy anyway.

We've been lazy about getting to church with the little one. It messes up his day so much....but then so did our errands last night. When we live 1/2 hour or more from the gluten free stuff it takes a while to run errands and he's still not up for long stretches except in the evening. Also with church being 50 miles away and having a new used gas hog van we will be staying home more. There is a church that is closer to us we want to check out...it's pretty small and probably doesn't have a very good Sabbath school which is why we've stayed with our old church.

Evie - wonder if you know about Fresno Pacific University (that's FPU, BTW), very good mennonite university here, all I remember is that the religion was founded by Menno Simons.....offshoot of Amish....but the school here's really progressive. Oh, I kind of got run out of that grad office, I was a little too, shall we say, ebullient, in a very sober and serious gaggle of professors and mennonite staff....bored out of my mind - used to cry at night (and this is when the heavy wine-drinking began  ) and not know why - - then I realized I was living the term BORED TO TEARS  I was a rather bad secretary (admin assistant) and was SOOOOOOO bored that I got quite distracted and caused a bit of mischief to entertain myself (remember - gluten haze in permanent residence in my brain).....I had many fans but a couple of stronger enemies and finally left. What a relief...then moved to Monterey - - for the years of madness from which I am now recovering.....

My life is starting to interfere with this thread.

Oh and Andrea, how beautiful you all are and your little girl looks soooo much like you. :)

:lol::lol::lol:

Do we have a life anymore outside of this thread?

My daughter not only looks like me she is like me. Just like I'm like my mom, and so on. The female side of my family is very head strong, although I've gotten better since becoming a christian. My daughter is very difficult for me since we are the same personality. I feel sorry for my hubby. My oldest son is a little more laid back and easier for me to deal with. My hubby has more problems with him since they are more similar in personality. Don't know about the baby yet. Probably in between. :P

I didn't do very well on my first day of my "new" diet... I forgot about the water when I woke I plopped a cup of tap water into the microwave for instant coffee and drank it...... dear gaaawwwddd I'll never get this right

Be easy on yourself Celia. We all need time to adjust to new things and new routines. :P

Sheeesh.....am I the only one here who just heard of the Mennonites? Maybe I gotta get out more often.

I'm thinking I'm not as conservative as some of you are as far as clothes go. Will I still be allowed on the farm??

I could never dress like the Mennonites I saw...and not just because of the tomboy factor...but...welll...I just love clothes WAY too much! They all seem to wear the same thing and long dresses on a hot day is not a good thing in my book. <_<

I think I dress appropriatelly for each occassion though. Today its freakin hot outside and I'm wearing shorts and bathing suit top. Thats comfortable for me. If I go to the store...I'll throw on a tank top and sandals. Can I still live in Rachelville??

Yes, Susan I have heard of it but am more familiar with Buffton college of Bluffton, Ohio and Mennonite U. of Newton, Kansas since they are closer to Iowa. When my husbands uncle passed away my husband saw to it that money went to both those universities, hubby was the administrator. Relatives got a bit too, not much, too many of us!! You are right, Menno Simmons was the founder.

I think some of our young people think the Mennonite colleges might be a bit stodgy too. So you were administrative assisstant too!! Our middle daughter is also one @ Wm Penn. U. here in Iowa, helped her finish her degree a few years ago. Been wondering how the job thing is going for you, did you get the offer

that would restrict you a lot for 3 years ahead or do I have you mixed up/ someone else? :o evie

Wow Evie, I really like the Mennonite homeschool program. I think the Mennonites and Adventist share a lot of the same beliefs. One thing I'm confused about is that they don't associate with those outside their faith as far as business anyway. That may be a more conservative group though. We have ADRA for our disaster response team. They work worldwide and are often there right alongside Red Cross when disasters strike. Our church is also very mission minded. The program we use is Rod and Staff, are you familiar with it. Talitha will be starting first grade this year, she's excited to start school and I told her she need to wait until the beginning of September. She's just now starting to be interested in learning to read...my oldest son wants to too since his sister is. :P Just on a side note, I'm not into church bashing and don't want to get into a debate over who's church is best. Church is for believers to come together but Jesus is the reason. Everyone has different beliefs and I respect that and know most if not all of you respect that as well.

Rachel, you might be the only one!

My parents grew up in an area in Kansas where there was, still is, a Mennonite community. A lot of their classmates were Mennonites.

Andrea, I was going to say your daughter looks just like you, a "little Andrea"!

job thing..... :(:(:( no real job...the artist I"ve been working for has been gone three weeks, hence all my time in the garden, with friends, painting the house, sewing curtains, AND ON THIS FREAKING SLUMBER PARTY CULT that is so entertaining and addicting.....

Sadly I had to tell those people that I couldn't handle the schedule of that job. They are considering me for other things, nothing's open yet, but I know they liked me quite a lot (that's what they told me) and had already mentioned me for a job in ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE.....um, I laughed out loud with the cop and said, sir, you really don't want me working with numbers.....I"m a word girl and a people person.

But, it was at that time I told him that I had been SO sick that I am on disability (I alluded to beign sick during the interview but didn't go into detail), which they would find out during the backgroudn check. And guess what, haven't heard a thing since. I don't really know what to do - they can't rule me out for part-time work due to disabilty....but I feel a little "shut out" since that revelation.... :(

Trying to talk my parents into buying another fixer-upper in this town - - -I refurbished two homes for them, LOVED doing it, with great success and profit for them. Would like to do that here.....am goign to work on them for that.

I do wear dresses and skirts BTW and I dress modestly when I'm out. If you're more comfortable in other things I'm not going to knock you for it (as long as your dressed). I'm definately not into nudist colonies...do those things even still exist? We all need to live with our conscience and try not to offend others at the same time...a delicate balance to say the least.

My husband and I love to take day/weekend trips to Lancaser, Pa. It is such beautiful country, and a lot of Mennonites and Amish people live there. Their farms are so picturesque--it looks like a painting! There is a shop there in Kitchen Kettle Village where the Mennonite women make and sell homemade jams, jellys, baked goods etc--they are so good. I just love it there.

Speaking of clothes, today I'm sporting a paper face mask because of all the sanding dust in the bedroom. We just came home from Home Depot--had to get ceiling paint. It must be 95 out there. The guy on the radio said 95-100 tomorrow :o

So true AndreaB, to each his own whatever the faith or?? Bashing of any kind is non productive in many ways. I know very little about Adventist but all true religions have good things about them. Sounds like you have a good group going there with Rod and Staff. When our granddaughter & family lived in Wyoming they had a Penn Dutch Mennonite family take care of their little girl, they really liked the way they took good care of her. They now live in Arizona and daughter will start to public school this fall. The parents are teachers but in high school. Have a good day!! Hot/ mugginess here!! :) evie We have a few families here who do home schooling and do a good job of it.

Rod and Staff is a Mennonite publishing company in Kentucky that does the homeschooling program as well as reading books. I would assume they use the same materials for the most part in there schools. I really like the program since it is so Jesus based, unlike alot of homeschool stuff out there.

That sounds like fun Patti. My husband's family is from Milton PA and his brother and wife as well as mother still live there. I've always wanted to visit an amish community just because all the pictures I've seen look so beautiful and peaceful. I like quiet...hope that won't get me kicked out of Rachelville.

Of course we couldn't eat the baked goods anymore.... :(

I always hated wearing masks...I used to wear the pollen masks so I wouldn't get so bad mowing the lawn. They made me so hot. I hope you don't get sick from all this.

Good morning you crazy crazy gals!!

As far as Rachel's meds, what if it is the thing that works? I think when we are so sick for so long and we've been doing everything in our power to get better, going to doctor after doctor for help, taking all kinds of pills, and capsules, and powders, eating all different kinds of foods, doing weird and crazy healing rituals (coffee enemas, liver flushes, just to name a few) it might be just easier to give up. But NO, Rachel does not accept that as an option. I admire her for fighting and for trying again and again and again.

Julie: AMEN AND AMEN!!!!! I was trying to come up with a way to express my thoughts, but, girl, you said it beautifully!!! A line from a poem keeps floating around in my brain, but I can't for the life of me remember the title of the poem. The line describes Rachel and all the rest of you courageous, never-give-up folks: "...to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield!" Ring a bell with anyone?

About that jigger of Jack - A while back the subject of alcohol dazes came up, and I said that I wouldn't want to give up having my Jack Daniels on Friday and Saturday nights. Someone answered that Jack was gluten free. :):)

Susan, and I can't remember who else asked - Yep, it was Jerry Lee Lewis! My baby sister and her best friend went rock and roll crazy, and were sort of hanging around the fringes of their idols. (Those nutty kids even cut a record of one of their duets. It was hilarious! To say they couldn't carry a tune in a bucket is like saying Mt. Everest is a hill.) Somehow they met Jerry Lee Lewis, and baby sister decided to fix him up with a blind date with our other sister, without telling her of course. (Other sister was a dignified stewardess with a charter airline.)

Anyway, daddy was sitting at the dining room table, drinking coffee and reading the paper. When the doorbell rang, he glanced out the DR window and spied JLL on the front porch. As he jumped up and dashed toward the front door, mother asked, "T., where are you going?" That's when daddy, who had never said an unkind word about anyone in his life, uttered the words that have gone down in our family history: "I'm goin' to throw a piece of white trash off my porch!!!" And so he did.

There's another family story about JLL, involving an aunt who worked for him years later as caretaker for his mother, but I won't bore you with that one. I STILL love his music!!! :P

Rachel - I have a problem with the sun too. It started a long time ago with a sunburn, and to this day I can't get in the sun, without tons of sunscreen and a very wide-brimmed hat. I hope you get well real soon, so you can write that book!

I'll be everlastingly grateful for what I've learned on this string about managing this yucky disease! I admire all of you for keeping on keeping on, for sharing your knowledge, AND for laughing!:lol::lol:

Celia's joke: :P:P:P

Okay, so here I am again responding to things that were discused 1,000s of pages ago, lol.:lol:

Goat milk. Couldn't stand the taste of any of the brands of goat milk I tried, but I love goat milk yogurt and goat cheese. I haven't tried any since going dairy free in December. I think I'm afraid to try. I haven't had a single sinus infection since November and I'm afraid to mess that up, lol. I was getting them (sinus infections) every 5-6 weeks without fail. I would love to have yogurt again though. The brand of yogurt I bought was a little runny but it was good, course I added sugar free syrup which is all chemicals, so wouldn't do that now, but I might try stevia which I'm finally getting to be able to tolerate taste wise.

Clothing on the Farm - yes, please, lol. I love you all, but some form of clothing please. For the record I'm wearing a workout type tank and shorts, so we're all good there.

Taste and sense of smell - I haven't had a sense of smell in ages and my taste is off too. I noticed some improvement after going gluten free which was wonderful.

Stopping supplements - I stopped all mine too when the msg issue popped up on this thread. I've been thinking of reintroducing them one at a time. I did start taking my Vit C without problem (although stopped a week or so before my biopsy).

Sun sensitivity - YES! I am supposed to have nice Italian olive skin, but I have been burning so easily in the last few years. Thursday, my mom commented on how pink my face was...sheesh I just walked from the car to the hospital--in that short sun exposure my face got "pink".

I am loving EVERYONE's new pictures!

Susan - I don't have a lot the sensitivities that others on this thread have either, but I think we've all learned and helped each other, so I'm am glad you are here (as I am glad everyone is here).

Andrea - you might also want to check out gauchos...gaucho pants and the coulottes (sort of the same thing anyway).

I love shopping...can we have our farm within a couple of hours of a shopping mall, lol.

Desperately need a vitamin D supplement. I've reacted to most brands I've tried.

Raising you vitamin D will increase absorption of calcium automatically without supplementation of calcium.  A high PTH can be caused by low D causing poor calcium absorption; not insuffient calcium intake.  With low D your body is not absorbing calcium from your food so it steals it from your bones.  Heart has priority over bone. I've been taking 10,000 IU D3 a day since 2015.  My doctor says to continue. To fix my lactose intolerance, lots of lactobacillus from yogurts, and brine fermented pickles and saurkraut and olives.  We lose much of our ability to make lactase endogenosly with maturity but a healthy colony of lactobacillus in our gut excretes lactase in exchange for room and board. The milk protein in grass fed milk does not bother me. It tastes like the milk I grew up on.  If I drink commercial milk I get heartburn at night. Some experts estimate that 90% of us do not eat Adequite Intake of choline.  Beef and eggs are the principle source. Iodine deficiency is a growing concern.  I take 600 mcg a day of Liquid Iodine.  It and NAC have accelerated my healing all over.  Virtually blind in my right eye after starting antihypertensive medication and vision is slowly coming back.  I had to cut out starches because they drove my glucose up into the 200+ range.  I replaced them with Red Bull for the glucose intake with the vitamins, minerals and Taurine needed to process through the mitochodria Krebs Cycle to create ATP.  Went from A1c 13 down to 7.9.  Work in progress. Also take B1,B2,B3,B5,B6. Liquid Iodine, Phosphatidyl Choline, Q10, Selenium, D and DHEA.     Choline supplemented as phosphatidylcholine decreases fasting and postmethionine-loading plasma homocysteine concentrations in healthy men +

@catnapt, Wheat germ has very little gluten in it.  Gluten is  the carbohydrate storage protein, what the flour is made from, the fluffy part.  Just like with beans, there's the baby plant that will germinate  ("germ"-inate) if sprouted, and the bean part is the carbohydrate storage protein.   Wheat germ is the baby plant inside a kernel of wheat, and bran is the protective covering of the kernel.   Little to no gluten there.   Large amounts of lectins are in wheat germ and can cause digestive upsets, but not enough Gluten to provoke antibody production in the small intestines. Luckily you still have time to do a proper gluten challenge (10 grams of gluten per day for a minimum of two weeks) before your next appointment when you can be retested.

Hello, @asaT, I'm curious to know whether you are taking other B vitamins like Thiamine B1 and Niacin B3.  Malabsorption in Celiac disease affects all the water soluble B vitamins and Vitamin C.  Thiamine and Niacin are required to produce energy for all the homocysteine lowering reactions provided by Folate, Cobalamine and Pyridoxine.   Weight gain with a voracious appetite is something I experienced while malnourished.  It's symptomatic of Thiamine B1 deficiency.   Conversely, some people with thiamine deficiency lose their appetite altogether, and suffer from anorexia.  At different periods on my lifelong journey, I suffered this, too.   When the body doesn't have sufficient thiamine to turn food, especially carbohydrates, into energy (for growth and repair), the body rations what little thiamine it has available, and turns the carbs into fat, and stores it mostly in the abdomen.  Consuming a high carbohydrate diet requires additional thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  Simple carbohydrates (sugar, white rice, etc.) don't contain thiamine, so the body easily depletes its stores of Thiamine processing the carbs into fat.  The digestive system communicates with the brain to keep eating in order to consume more thiamine and other nutrients it's not absorbing.   One can have a subclinical thiamine insufficiency for years.  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so the symptoms can wax and wane mysteriously.  Symptoms of Thiamine insufficiency include stunted growth, chronic fatigue, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi (diarrhea, abdominal pain), heart attack, Alzheimer's, stroke, and cancer.   Thiamine improves bone turnover.  Thiamine insufficiency can also affect the thyroid.  The thyroid is important in bone metabolism.  The thyroid also influences hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, and menopause.  Vitamin D, at optimal levels, can act as a hormone and can influence the thyroid, as well as being important to bone health, and regulating the immune system.  Vitamin A is important to bone health, too, and is necessary for intestinal health, as well.   I don't do dairy because I react to Casein, the protein in dairy that resembles gluten and causes a reaction the same as if I'd been exposed to gluten, including high tTg IgA.  I found adding mineral water containing calcium and other minerals helpful in increasing my calcium intake.   Malabsorption of Celiac affects all the vitamins and minerals.  I do hope you'll talk to your doctor and dietician about supplementing all eight B vitamins and the four fat soluble vitamins because they all work together interconnectedly.

Hi Jane: You may want to try the D3 I now take. I have reactions to fillers and many additives. Sports Research, it is based in the USA and I have had no bad reactions with this brand. The D3 does have coconut oil but it is non GMO, it is Gluten free, Soy free, Soybean free and Safflower oil free.  I have a cupboard full of supplements that did not agree with me -  I just keep trying and have finally settled on Sports Research. I take NAKA Women's Multi full spectrum, and have not felt sick after taking 2 capsules per day -  it is a Canadian company. I buy both from Amazon. I wish you well in your searching, I know how discouraging it all is. Florence.

highly unlikely  NOTHING and I mean NOTHING else has ever caused me these kinds of symptoms I have no problem with dates, they are a large part of my diet In fact, I eat a very high fiber, very high vegetable and bean diet and have for many years now. It's considered a whole foods plant based or plant forward diet (I do now eat some lean ground turkey but not much) I was off dairy for years but recently had to add back plain yogurt to meet calcium needs that I am not allowed to get from supplements (I have not had any problem with the yogurt)   I eat almost no processed foods. I don't eat out. almost everything I eat, I cook myself I am going to keep a food diary but to be honest, I already know that it's wheat products and also barley that are the problem, which is why I gradually stopped eating and buying them. When I was eating them, like back in early 2024, when I was in the middle of moving and ate out (always had bread or toast or rolls or a sub or pizza) I felt terrible but at that time was so busy and exhausted that I never stopped to think it was the food. Once I was in my new place, I continued to have bread from time to time and had such horrible joint pain that I was preparing for 2 total knee replacements as well as one hip! The surgery could not go forward as I was (and still am) actively losing calcium from my bones. That problem has yet to be properly diagnosed and treated   anyway over time I realized that I felt better when I stopped eating bread. Back at least 3 yrs ago I noticed that regular pasta made me sick so I switched to brown rice pasta and even though it costs a lot more, I really like it.   so gradually I just stopped buying and eating foods with gluten. I stopped getting raisin bran when I was constipated because it made me bloated and it didn't help the constipation any more (used to be a sure bet that it would in the past)   I made cookies and brownies using beans and rolled oats and dates and tahini and I LOVE them and have zero issues eating those I eat 1 or more cans of beans per day easily can eat a pound of broccoli - no problem! Brussels sprouts the same thing.   so yeh it's bread and related foods that are clearly the problem  there is zero doubt in my mind
