Plus, Gluten free Living just had an article on this saying that most Celiacs should be able to handle oats if they are not contaminated.

I would love to try oats again, but I'm nervous! Prior to diagnosis I went through a phase of eating steel-cut oatmeal every single day, and my symptoms were the worst ever. As my husband put it, I had rash on top of rash. That could just be a coincidence though. I am very curious....

I ordered one bag of oats from the gluten free oats people in Wyoming. I should be getting it in a couple of weeks. I am not sure if I will try it! I have visions of me just staring at the bag of oats. If I do try them I will post.

I know there is debate among those that are experts. From what I understand a certain percent will react to the protein in oats because it is very similar to the wheat protein.

Peronaly I think it is as simple as some ppl are oat intorlant in addtion to celiac disease, not becuase of. Only problem is... how do you know?

I samples the oats from the cream hill in canada and they were wonderful. I didn't get sick , but I think both websites say to start out very slow when adding them to your diet.....

Please let me know what you think of the oats from Wyoming, as I might order from them as it will be much cheaper shipping. Pm me as I don't always remember to get back to each thread. Brain fog has got ahold on me!!!!!!

Thanks, broncobux, I just printed out the order form, and will call to place an order tomorrow! I don't know if I can handle oats (probably not, since I can't handle other grains), but I will try them to see what happens.

I have made oat porridge from whole oats by boiling it until they break down. I have not done this since I found I could not eat wheat, so I don't know if rinsing them prior to cooking would remove any cross-contamination.

I so miss oats. That was always my favorite hot cereal maybe I will get hold of cream hill.

      Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute.
