Results From Upper Gi Series Test And Dr. Appt.

Well, had the upper GI series yesterday.

I ended up having to drink more of that barium stuff because when they took me back in to do more pictures, the stuff had already gone through me. The technician said I was what they call "rapid transit", LOL, "No Kidding Bub! More like Super Sonic!" LOL! :D<_<

Anyway, I had to stick around the hospital until 1 pm for the doctor appt to discuss the results. I get on the elevator to go outside, and lo and behold, there is a pizza delivery man with about 8 large pizzas delivering to some people at the hospital. How cruel!!!! :angry:

When I got into the doctor, he said that he didn't see any indication of any ulcerative jujenitivis (or whatever that name is......) or cancer. He did say that it was very difficult to see the bowel though because it was absolutely full of water. He also said he wanted to do another biopsy to check the villi, so that is booked for June 14/06. He also wants to start me on IV iron, but not until after the biopsy.

He said that our next course of action will be to try a stronger regiment of prednisone and for a longer period of time. But he did say that even if this works, usually it will only be for awhile, and it will come back again, back on prednisone, etc. etc. Basically, he said it will be a chronic, ongoing thing.

So, that's where we are now.......

Well it's good you don't have cancer! and you're having your biopsy on my 16th birthday, hope it goes well!

I remembered that you mentioned you were going for this test--thanks for letting us know, I was wondering how it all went. I wish that there was more that could be done--hopefully the treatment will work for longer than they expect--maybe even enough time for them to think of something else. I really hope so. :)

Hi Karen,

Hopefully the prednisone will work for you. I hope they see lots of little villi standing on guard when your endoscopy is done. Is your tTg level still high?

Did you want to trip the pizza guy? :rolleyes:

Good luck with your endo. Let us know how it goes.

Hey Karen, maybe I am in the dark here, but why were you having the tests done? Are you still having problems after going gluten-free? I hope things get better for you!!! I am glad that the doc didn't find anything too serious!

Tiffany, Karen has a chronic D problem due to a disease that she has besides the Celiac. She has been gluten-free for a long time, but has been hoping they would solve the problem. It is really tough news for her. It is great she does not have Cancer as that can happen with the disease she has. Her villi have always been flat with every exam they do. I hope this next one shows some soldiers standing at attention. It has to be tough to raise four children with the exhaustion due to the D problem. She has a wonderful supportive husband and great kids. I always keep her in my prayers.

Karen, you have my prayers and kindest thoughts for your Dr. to find a resolution to your chronic D and get you back in good health.

Hey Karen,been thinking about you.

Well at least they didn't find anything sinister with the barium.

I'd imagine you're not looking forward to the Pred -but fingers crossed a higher/longer dose may kick start your stubborn little villi guys into growing back a little,and maybe lessen the D ?

Well, it is a real blessing they didn't find cancer or something like that! ...but I understand that knowing that doesn't 'make it all better' for you. Glad you're having the iron treatment done...I remember us talking about that a while back. So did you decide that the SCD wasn't for you? Here's to being frustrated and sad with you friend... Hang in there...

I'm sorry that he said that what you are goin through is chronic :( That is not fun news. But you can prove him wrong! Be strong :)

Aw Karen you have been through so much and then to run into the pizza guy! Are they making sure the barium they are giving you is gluten-free? Not all are, we found that out the hard way. I hope the prednisone helps, it was one of the few things prediagnosis that did for me. I'm glad they didn't find anything awful but I hope they can give you some relief soon. ((((((((((Hugs)))))))))

Karen, Sorry to hear what the doctor said about being on Prednisone for so long. It would of been nice if the Doctor could of told you more though after going through all that. Don't get it why can't you see through the water,......anyway I don't know what I'm talking about either. I'll be praying for you in June. Keep strong. {{hugs}}

Sorry that I am so late responding. Have not been on the computer for several days, as it's been a little hectic here. I know that you are disappointed that no solution was found but your a trooper and I feel that there is one just around the corner. So keep the faith girl.

When you get down, just remember that you are the official God-Mother of our Celiac world. You pick us up when we're down, you cry with us when the tears just come, you make us laugh at ourselves and you have an incredible sence of justice, caring and faith. So cheers to you and that happy husband of yours.

      Celiac Disease and Skin Disorders: Exploring a Genetic Connection

      Maybe they can attribute certain skin conditions to either being susceptible to getting Celiac......or the other way around....but I have to ask if certain people are prone to Celiac because of genetics and some people aren't. It's kind of the same thing as what came first.....the chicken or the egg.?

      @xxnonamexx, There's labeling on those Trubar gluten free high fiber protein bars that say: "Manufactured in a facility that also processes peanuts, milk, soy, fish, WHEAT, sesame, and other tree nuts." You may want to avoid products made in shared facilities. If you are trying to add more fiber to your diet to ease constipation, considering...

      What kind of practitioner did the blood test? Was this a medical doctor, a naturopathic doctor, a GI doc? I would certainly follow up with them and ask why they advised you not to eat red meat. I mean, it could be something like they, themselves, are a vegetarian and give that advice to everyone. Have you had an endoscopy with biopsy of the small bowel...

      @EndlessSummer, You said you had an allergy to trees. People with Birch Allergy can react to green beans (in the legume family) and other vegetables, as well as some fruits. Look into Oral Allergy Syndrome which can occur at a higher rate in Celiac Disease. Switching to a low histamine diet for a while can give your body time to rid itself of...

You may want to avoid products made in shared facilities.   If you are trying to add more fiber to your diet to ease constipation, considering eating more leafy green vegetables and cruciferous vegetables.  Not only are these high in fiber, they also are good sources of magnesium.  Many newly diagnosed are low in magnesium and B vitamins and suffer with constipation.  Thiamine Vitamin B1 and magnesium work together.  Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine has been shown to improve intestinal health.  Thiamine and magnesium are important to gastrointestinal health and function.

      Welcome to celiac.com @sha1091a! Your experience is a very common one. Celiac disease is one the most underdiagnosed and misdiagnosed medical conditions out there. The reasons are numerous. One key one is that its symptoms mimic so many other diseases. Another is ignorance on the part of the medical community with regard to the range of symptoms that celiac disease can produce. Clinicians often are only looking for classic GI symptoms and are unaware of the many other subsystems in the body that can be damaged before classic GI symptoms manifest, if ever they do. Many celiacs are of the "silent" variety and have few if any GI symptoms while all along, damage is being done to their bodies. In my case, the original symptoms were elevated liver enzymes which I endured for 13 years before I was diagnosed with celiac disease. By the grace of God my liver was not destroyed. It is common for the onset of the disease to happen 10 years before you ever get a diagnosis. Thankfully, that is slowly changing as there has developed more awareness on the part of both the medical community and the public in the past 20 years or so. Blessings!

      I found out the age of 68 that I am a celiac. When I was 16, I had my gallbladder removed when I was 24 I was put on a medication because I was told I had fibromyalgia.   going to Doctor’s over many years, not one of them thought to check me out for celiac disease. I am aware that it only started being tested by bloodwork I believe in the late 90s, but still I’m kind of confused why my gallbladder my joint pain flatulent that I complained of constantly was totally ignored. Is it not something that is taught to our medical system? It wasn’t a Doctor Who asked for the test to be done. I asked for it because of something I had read and my test came back positive. My number was quite high.Are there other people out here that had this kind of problems and they were ignored?

      Welcome to celiac.com, @EndlessSummer! Do you react to all vegetables or just specific kinds or families of them? What you describe with green beans sounds like it has an anaphylaxis component. Like you, walnuts are a problem for me. They will often give me a scratchy throat so I try to avoid them. Does it matter if the vegies are raw or will-cooked in how you react to them?
