:( NNOOOOOOOOO! I have it.... I don't understand what all these tests means but....I have the celiac gene..... :o

It's difficult to except. I thought I was milk intolerant. I was hoping I wasn't gluten intolerant.

Well, all these tests mean you're definitely gluten and casein intolerant, have mild malabsorption, and have two celiac genes. Welcome to the club.

The bright side is, that now you KNOW what the problem is, and you have the power to change your diet to get better. No more guessing and fooling yourself. It's hard, but you will manage, because you have to. Your only two choices now are to deny the facts and stay sick, or accept the diagnosis and find out what you can still eat (a whole lot) and get busy getting well!

I believe the choice is clear. All the best, you can do it! B)

Thank you ladies (sniff) :( How long does it take for the wheat cravings to stop? I was almost 4 weeks and I was still having cravings...

You know this is really hard for an Italian to hear. Spaghetti was my favorite. Yeah, I know, rice spaghetti. yuck. :P

Thank you for the cat compliment. He knows he's cute. When he wants me to feed him he roles over on his back and strikes a pose.

Welcome to our club... :D The cravings get better. I think it took 2 months before I stopped craving things. I came real close to giving in when my hubby bought Dunkin Donuts for breakfast one day this weekend. I loved the cinnamon munchkins... I do miss them.

Corn spaghetti is better than the rice spaghetti.... I haven't tried Tinkyada yet, but I hear it's great.

I remember that moment... & the roller coaster ride that followed... oh, no more pasta... but I'll finally get rid of that anemia... but no more french bread... but no more rushing for the bathroom...&c.

In the long run your health is much better than even the most delicious food. And doing without wheat gets easier when you start to get well.

Whenever I get down in the dumps & feel sorry for myself because I can't have something I want, I go to the thread that has all the good things gluten-free has done for everyone. It's a real mood-lifter for me.

Before you find something out you always think to yourself... it's okay, I can handle it... but once you know it to be true, it's hard to deal with.

You do realize I have a lot of cleaning out the pantry to do...

It helps if you cook the gluten-free pastas a little differently, boil them for a minute & then let the water cool down, testing frequently for doneness.

Tinkyada taste just like regular pasta - none of my friends notice the difference. The Italian gluten-free pastas are quite good as well. Celiac is actually quite common in Italy, and many of the better replacements come from there. There's a LOT of Italian stuff that is naturally gluten-free or naturally made gluten free. Bread's the tricky one, but the fish and meat dishes, as well as many of the vegetable dishes that are 'standards' can be made gluten-free relatively easily. And risotto - it's a celiac's dream come true! The best part about good Italian food is that it's made from scratch - so you control what's going into your food when you're cooking it. :)

Get Annalise Roberts' GLuten-free Baking Classics. The chocolate chip cookies taste just like the best gluten ones I've ever made, and the coconut cake is the best cake I've ever tasted (and I've always baked form scratch, even before going gluten-free this year)!

DEFINITELY try the Tinkyada pastas. They even have a lasagna noodle. All of their pastas taste and feel just like the real thing. They withstand quite a bit of overcooking too.

Get Bette Hagman's book "The Gluten Free Gourmet cooks Comfort Foods" it is AWESOME! There are some amazing cake recipes in there as well as so much more. For the flour blends she uses, I usually just substitute whatever all purpose gluten-free flour mix I have on hand. (I just "guesstimate" how much to use based on what the recipe calls for of her flour blends based on what types of flours are in my particular gluten-free all purpose flour)...

They're more of the cake donut variety ( I always liked cake donuts better anyway) but yummmm. If you order them online, be sure to put them in the freezer as soon as you get them to keep them fresh. Many Whole Foods carry them, there is a store locater on the site as well.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! :) I will get those cookbooks. This morning it was difficult. I woke up and I couldn't get back to sleep because I was upset. Then I thought: "Maybe these results are wrong, who know's this lab could be not a good lab and the doctor who did the tests is incompetent" Would you call that "denial"? I'm bummed today. My sister said even lipstick has gluten in it! :o What brand of lipstick do ya'all use?

I also told my two sons that I wanted to get them tested and my 16 year old said "So? I'm still gonna eat wheat" Now what can I do? I need a really good bread for their lunches any suggestions. Any that I bought at th store was either too wet (rice/almond) or way too dry (tapioca bread yuch)

Nars cosmetics are all gluten free and they have beautiful, highly pigmented lipsticks -- they're kind of high-end and an indulgence for me as a graduate student, but I don't wear lipstick that often. There are plenty of other gluten-free lipsticks out there, I'm sure -- and you can do a search on the boards for other people's favorites.

Welcome! I felt much as you did at first, but I've actually come to realize how lucky I am that this was all that was wrong with me! I also feel and function better than I have in my entire adult life after five months into this -- I should look a lot better too once I've put some more weight on! I'm a huge food person and this felt like an irreconcilable loss for me, but that's actually what's made it easier to get through the change in habits -- if you know how to love and appreciate something, that doesn't go away even though the way you love and appreciate it might have to change!

Welcome to the club. I'd like to add that though Tinkyada pasta tastes fine to me - I much prefer the corn, rice, soy blend made by two Italian companies. Bi-Aglut is my fave with Dr. Schar coming in as a close second. I've only found them online - www.shopbydiet.com and a few other sites carry them. Schar crackers fooled my gluten eating freinds. Seven months into my new life, I find the diet is easy to follow (though difficult to learn) and I don't do without wonderful food. I eat more organic things now and try not to overindulge in the wonderful baked goods I've found. Check out www.123glutenfree.com for the best browines, pan bars and cookies. They are to die for yummy!

Hi! HLA-DQ 1 is a gene predisposing you to gluten sensitivity. You have TWO, which means you got one from each parent. This means all of your children will have gotten at least ONE gluten sensitivity gene as well. They are not the main celiac genes, but still mean your body doesn't tolerate gluten. Two copies mean" there is an even stronger predisposition to gluten sensitivity and the resultant immunologic response may be more severe."

Hope this helps. Also, Lancome's "Rouge Absolu" lipstick is gluten-free. Pricey, but very nice! I have a 13 yeat old who doesn't want to give up his wheat and a sixteen year old who's a vegetarian who I don't want to! Sigh...

DQ1 subtype 6 is a gluten sensitive gene, but the DQ3 subtype 8 (also refered to as DQ8) is a celiac gene.

My test results also showed one celiac and one gluten sensitve gene...I was simultaneously in denial but also relieved to have answers. Just sent my son's test kit to Enterolab today, but he's not quite 5 so hopefully he'll be receptive to any potential dietary changes.

I sooo feel your pain :( But it will get better, it will get better, it will get better.....

Right???

      Hello, @Jordan Carlson, So glad you're feeling better.   Tecta is a proton pump inhibitor.  PPI's also interfere with the production of the intrinsic factor needed to absorb Vitamin B12.  Increasing the amount of B12 you supplement has helped overcome the lack of intrinsic factor needed to absorb B12. Proton pump inhibitors also reduce the production of digestive juices (stomach acids).  This results in foods not being digested thoroughly.  If foods are not digested sufficiently, the vitamins and other nutrients aren't released from the food, and the body cannot absorb them.  This sets up a vicious cycle. Acid reflux and Gerd are actually symptoms of producing too little stomach acid.  Insufficient stomach acid production is seen with Thiamine and Niacin deficiencies.  PPI's like Tecta also block the transporters that pull Thiamine into cells, preventing absorption of thiamine.  Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are difficulty swallowing, gagging, problems with food texture, dysphagia. Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are symptoms of ADHD and anxiety.  Vyvanse also blocks thiamine transporters contributing further to Thiamine deficiency.  Pristiq has been shown to work better if thiamine is supplemented at the same time because thiamine is needed to make serotonin.  Doctors don't recognize anxiety and depression and adult onset ADHD as early symptoms of Thiamine deficiency. Stomach acid is needed to digest Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in fruits and vegetables.  Ascorbic acid left undigested can cause intestinal upsets, anxiety, and heart palpitations.   Yes, a child can be born with nutritional deficiencies if the parents were deficient.  Parents who are thiamine deficient have offspring with fewer thiamine transporters on cell surfaces, making thiamine deficiency easier to develop in the children.  A person can struggle along for years with subclinical vitamin deficiencies.  Been here, done this.  Please consider supplementing with Thiamine in the form TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) which helps immensely with dysphagia and neurological symptoms like anxiety, depression, and ADHD symptoms.  Benfotiamine helps with improving intestinal health.  A B Complex and NeuroMag (a magnesium supplement), and Vitamin D are needed also.

You'll want to get checked for nutritional deficiencies and start on supplementation of B vitamins, especially Thiamine Vitamin B 1.   There's some scientific evidence that the fat pad that buffers the aorta which disappears in SMA is caused by deficiency in Thiamine.   In Thiamine deficiency, the body burns its stored fat as a source of fuel.  That fat pad between the aorta and digestive system gets used as fuel, too.       Wow! You're pretty young to have a diagnosis of SMA syndrome. But youth also has its advantages when it comes to healing, without a doubt. You might be surprised to find out how your health improves and how much better you feel once you eliminate gluten from your diet. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that, when gluten is consumed, triggers an attack on the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestines where all our nutrition is absorbed. It is made up of billions of tiny finger-like projections that create a tremendous surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the person with celiac disease, unchecked gluten consumption generates inflammation that wears down these fingers and, over time, greatly reduces the nutrient absorbing efficiency of the small bowel lining. This can generate a whole host of other nutrient deficiency related medical problems. We also now know that the autoimmune reaction to gluten is not necessarily limited to the lining of the small bowel such that celiac disease can damage other body systems and organs such as the liver and the joints and cause neurological problems.  It can take around two years for the villous lining to completely heal but most people start feeling better well before then. It's also important to realize that celiac disease can cause intolerance to some other foods whose protein structures are similar to gluten. Chief among them are dairy and oats but also eggs, corn and soy. Just keep that in mind.
