So the first night I pre-looked over the menu at the place we were going to be eating and they had roasted chicken with a vegetable and I thought, perfect! It comes out breaded  ....who has ever heard of a roasted chicken that is breaded?? That's like an oxymoron

Then the second night I was talking to the waitress about wheat allergy/gluten intolerance and asked her a bunch of questions for the manager (i.e. dedicated fryer for fries, wheat ingredients in the hamburger patties, could I just get a plain grilled chicken breast, etc) She comes back and says, "the manager can say with somewhat certainty the hamburger patties don't have gluten but not sure about the bun..." X 10

Jools - I just read this again...........my gawd!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :blink::lol::( :(

You know, I think it's a bit different in California.....lots of nouvelle cuisine/bistro cuisine, people really are a bit more up on things, and these days I rarely encounter such idiocy as you describe (it's even LESS likely in the larger and WAY MORE COOL cities  than this hell hole  )

I'm sorry that happened for you.....but Nik is right, the more you eat out, the easier it is, and I"ve found that the tiny/private restaurants/bistros are very safe.

but you have to laugh - and cry - about her comments about the burger

Um, for any newbies who have suddenly jumped in and read this post of Jess's: Lyle is NOT a boyfriend nor husband. Jus' makin' that clear........ .. .

Yes, that must be clarified, wouldn't want to scare anyone away or summat

sillies - I have not been taking care of myself - - eating CRAP :( Very lazy about my diet (strict gluten avoidance, but wayyyyyyy too much sugar-y stuff and crap - not enough cooking - too many dinners of TJ's mini chicken tacos and stuff like taht)

It's caught up with me - have to go on MASSIVELY healthy detox diet now. I think I am seriously addicted to sugar :( Two weekends in a row I have eaten a whole pan of brownies  and it's been YEARS since I've done that.

I did get my period three days early, though, which explains some of it

anywho, I feel like RUBBISH and must turn this around tout-sweet - - going to be hard giving up the sugar, esp. since the boys at work just got a HUGE case of Dove Chocs.......

help me

Oh Suze, I hear ya on this one.....sigh.....it's so hard to give up cuz it's so addictive. I've tried every which way to do it, have had some success but it's a never ending process <_<

Just say NO to the Dove chocolate!!!!

Sillies - - dreamt I was in Australia and then flew to New Zealand (somehow a six-hour flight in my dream) and was in a plane with a detachable roof  Kind of open- air.....

Anywho, in NZ I found a kitteh that is my very own Kit Kit  Put him in my purse and then was about to fight w/ customs to get him home.........

 wackl

Oddly enough, I probably do use it 10 times a day

That's our Jess :D

Julie!! I have been thinking 'bout you! Just now in the shower (honest to gawd) I reminded meselph to send you a note so see if all was well. I also wanted to tell you that I was out near Ulta on Saturday, so (natch) I went in and they had the Kurl Karma! B) Love it!! It's creamier than the Curlinterrupted, and I think slightly better suited to my finer, thinner hair. (end of hair tawk)

Glad you had a nice, pampered getaway.....and yeah about the phood..

Lotsa snaugh for you too Patti, a winter wonderland there in PA....

Thanks for the info on the Kurl Karma. I really want to try that one as well, not so sure I like the CurlInterrupted on me hair. I plan to pick up the Kurl Karma sometime this week and give it a test run, I'll let you know what I think. Other than that I might have to go to their gel or mousse (if they don't have gluten in it). I also might try the smoothing line just for kicks, again if the ingredients are acceptable.

Been thinking bout you too friend, know lotsa changes are on the horizon and hope you are holding up ok :)

Awwwwwww . . . and so now it's in the crockpot?? . . . I seem to remember some recipe of yours which called for animal flesh and vegetables . . .What's fer supper, Jess?

OMgosh we were having a convo this weekend about eating different animals/wildlife, venison, ducks, pheasant, someone mentioned squirrel......the HORROR.

Just got a terrible image of squirrel and crockpot

.....chews the Weezel (seriously)

This made me SNORT wildly!!!

Bizee kitee

PATTI!!! Thanks for the link - having looked at pics Tel definitely does NOT have shingles........looking at pics Tel's look just like hives...and anti-histamine seems to have taken the edge off the swelling

Gawd!!....his immune system is such a drama queen!!!!!!

Hi Nik Nik :) I am alive!! I made it through the weekend, barely

Oh no not the dreaded hives for Tel :( Hives are the bane of my existence, hate them with a passion, BUT good news the anti-histamine is helping. Hope he continues to improve

Stay warm all youse in snaugh territory!! :D

Patti-

I just saw your post count....was it you who sent the fluid rush here at work on Friday? I am sure only a large post roll-over could be to blame!

I've been using Brocato hair products. I phound out about them at the salon where I had me Deva cut last month. Julie told me that they were available at Ulta (and more resonably priced than at the salon).

I use the Splassh shampoo and conditioner--which is a good basic everyday shampoo/conditioner, and the two curl balms that I mentioned. None of these have gluten--some of their stuff does.

Open Original Shared Link

I highly recommend :D

Me too, I like it. Very good prices at Ulta also for great big containers, they often run sales and send out a coupon in the Sun papers.

Good return policy as well, they let you try it and you can always return it if you don't like it/doesn't work for you.

I have been using the Splassh s & c and then once a week use the Saturate (more moisturizing formula).

I think they have a smoothing line too that i mentioned wanting to try, Suze that might work for you??

Sillies, OMG, did I tell you I went out Sat. night to hear this PHAB band and......the Old Lady shut the bar down? I was taken home in a cab at 2 am :o:lol:  I think the last time I was out that late was about......10 years ago?

another reason I feel like rubbish

OMG!!:lol::lol: Well did ya have phun, or can you remember?!?!? Do tell....

Which reminds me, where I went they have an English style pub on site and we tried to get in one night for dinner but it was full, I so wanted to go and experience its pubi-ness and do Nikki proud :lol:

but you have to laugh - and cry - about her comments about the burger

I know, crazy!!!

I have a lot to learn about eating out gluten-free that is fo sho

Jools, so sorry you didn't get into the pub!

I think we should ALL gather in a pub today in a cold, snowy city wif a big, blazing fire......absinthe and cinnamon bread all around......a big limo w/ tiger pigs to drive us to a chalet wif crutch-tip infused ho'tubs

Must check out this smoothing stuff at Ulta.....feeling that it's dangers to even go in there, though

Of course - I am PHIGHTING the curl in my hair, constantly <_< Just got it cut, TOO SHORT, hate it and feel like a van-driving soccer mom :lol: (with no offense meant to same)

:o

Thank gawd my kids don't play soccer or I would suspect you might be talking about ME!!!

:lol::lol:

Actually I would LOVE to NOT drive a van . . . but it does haul a lot of crap stuff . . . and it's really difficult for the kids to ding the neighboring parked cars when the doors can only slide.

All right, all right. .. . . E-NUFF about the life-saving products for curly-heads.....! Someone please give me the name of a product (that will NOT cost me arm and leg) that will make my poker-straight, thin, fine hair gorgeously thick-looking, shining and full of body, and will magically keep it holding a style all through the day.

Please.

Someone....anyone.

I must say, Nik, that when we were in London I was very impressed with how knowledgeable ALL of the restaurants were that we visited. I think all of the servers knew what the words "celiac" and "gluten" meant - - unlike here - - and we seemed to have much less trouble finding gluten-free choices there than over here.

Tel doesn't have shingles! :)

Um.. . ...why are they called shingles?

And Nik got a wee frog. . . .. are you sure, now? Were you possibly in a hypnotic state? :P:rolleyes:

So, this one time, when I was about 16, a squirrel killed itself on our power lines and took out the whole neighborhood. My 13 yr old neighbor, who was a great friend, decided to ask his mum if we could eat it. So she told him to chop it's head off and clean out its guts, which he did, and we proceeded to have Sparky Stew. Tastes like chicken. (They're from Arkansas, whaddaya want?)

Yeah, we got a whole FOOT of snow here in CT. Boyfriend is thrilled at the delay in spring cleanups.

Hi y'all! No measurable snow here....just nasty bitter cold wind! Not a pleasant day here. All of this talk of eating rats and squirrels brings to mind Euell Gibbons and Living off the Land!!! I tried lots of things..but mostly plant - stuff. Did you know that Nettles and Milkweed are actually pretty good? (By the way E. Gibbons made his big splash in the 70's). I did not eat rats or squirrels....which as far as I'm concerned are pretty much the same thing! :P

Suicidal squirrels- so sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We just gotta foot o' snaugh too! Yikes! Sure is purty though!

...might browse Ebay....see if I can pick him up a new immune system (ERROR on his existing!!!)

Niikerler- If you find 'em buy me one too- I'll pay you back. I am SO glad that Tel doesn't have shingles- my dad had them last winter and they were SO painful!

Alright. I'm gonna go out on a limb here. This is difficult to prove, since NONE of us has offered up substantiating evidence, but I'm gonna declare that my knee bruise trumps all y'alls banged-up-body-parts bruises. The coloring is quite dramatic...

I no believe it wif out yer substantiating evidence!

Patti- You are NOT a ninny! You are a composed, lovely lady (who's got a ton going on right now!).

Nobody can see in, right? Click here to see the audience yesterday! :o

On some occasions there have been two, but yesterday just the one. First time we've been able to catch it in a photo.

SO CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the big mural I've just finished for DD's room.....she's got a thang fer zebras,

Em- THIS is absolutely incredible! I'm speechless!

Lots happening around here. DD and her boyfriend, David have an apartment together. David has been working as a substitute teacher. He obviously won't be able to work over the summer, and the economy the way it is.......it'll be hard for him to find something. David is like family, and in hard times......you take care of your own. So hubby offered to let them live with us to save money. With snow days and holidays, it's been tough going for them, too....so they're going to move in next month.

I think this is happening more and more. Not that I'm happy with the economy, but in some ways, it's kind of nice. My cousins built a duplex in their mom's backyard (years ago)- it's like their own compound. Would love my sister to live closer (so I could steal my goonies more often)!

This morning my sweet, adorable Lyle left me a rat. On my bed.

I know it was just for me because it wasn't even nibbled on. :)

Soooozie! What an av pic.....I just LOVE it - - Weezie's phace is priceless.:wub:

JULES!!! You survived!!!!!

GAWD..it makes me heart sink Jools :(

I think eating out gluten-free gets easier the more you do it - the more you do it, the easier it gets to ask questions/get a feel for a place AND not feel like you're a pain in their arse (which of course we are NOT, but you know what I mean)

Glad you had some fun though :D

Gawd!!....his immune system is such a drama queen!!!!!!

Jules- Glad you had phun but sorry about the breakout and the difficulty eating out. I was looking at a "gluten-free menu" the other day and I SWEAR this place thought milk had gluten in it

It does get easier but usually takes a lot of splainin! I agree- I have MUCH better luck at small places with chefs as opposed to cooks.

I think we should ALL gather in a pub today in a cold, snowy city wif a big, blazing fire......absinthe and cinnamon bread all around......a big limo w/ tiger pigs to drive us to a chalet wif crutch-tip infused ho'tubs

Em... I just have to say again....that mural is astounding! Just love it! Wanna do one for me? B)

Leeasah.....company comin to stay! I agree with you that families should take care of one another! It's not easy for adult children to come home....all the way around. I hope it all goes smoothly for you.

How's Tel...Niknik? Hives are no phun. Hope he's better soon.

Ju-lee...I sympathize with the restaraunt thing. Around here, when we were attempting to still eat out, I've gotten some really strange comments. Even had one manager tell me...."Oh, my husband had that but he got over it!".....after they poisoned me. (This was in an Outback that has a gluten-free menu). "Oh...you can't have potatoes..right?" I love the way they set the bread directly in front of you after you tell them you can't have it...and the croutons on the salads.....We do NOT go out to anyplace anymore...have not in about a year...I'm too paranoid

Uuuups......we're not supposed to talk about that here....are we?

How's the knee!?! We need a progress report....please

Drinking age is 19 here. And the way Ontario now has its graduated licensing in place, kids who get their learner's permit at 16 aren't driving independently for two years afterward - - until they're 18. SO. . ......... .. they really begin to drink and drive in earnest at about the same time. . .. . .....<_<

So next - - a leopard face, this one unsettlingly close. . .. . ...not gonna want to go to bed with it starin' at me, fo sho......will decidedly NOT be a bedroom piece.

I think the drinking age should invariably come two years before the driving age. Most people have burned themselves out by then on binge drinking, and those who haven't, will just drive drunk anyway. It's so strange that our driving age is 16, smoking/lotto 18, and drinking 21. You get a deadly weapon before you can smoke a bloody cigarette whilst scratching a lotto ticket?!?!?!?

You need to throw the voting age into all this.........At 18 you are presumably old enough to make a momentous, potentially far-reaching democratic decision, but ya gotta wait a year later to start legally getting hammered.......

I was a soccer mom for many years, but hardly stereotypical. No van.....no short hair. Kids would ask me if I was a hippy  .....mind you , they have no clue what a hippy really looks like!

Thanks to all for the positive support......I think it will be good for alll of us.

Tinkerbell is an indoor cat, but she did find a mouse in the house once and put it in DD's shoe! :P

Speaking of rashes and pain....when DD got tested for Lupus, it did come back positive for the skin version. DD was given topical cream and an oral prescription of some kind. The pills seem to help, but she still occassionally gets a HORRIBLE itch that is so bad it brings her to sobbing tears............and it is not where there is a rash........nothing. Now the derm thinks maybe it's not lupus. Jeez..........the first diagnosis before that was scabies..........WRONG  ....so it's a vicious cycle of misdiagnoses!

Excessive dietary tyrosine can cause problems.  Everything in moderation.   Sulfites can also trigger migraines. Sulfites are found in fermented, pickled and aged foods, like cheese.  Sulfites cause a high histamine release.  High histamine levels are found in migraine.  Following a low histamine diet like the low histamine Autoimmune Protocol diet, a Paleo diet, helps immensely.    Sulfites and other migraine trigger foods can cause changes in the gut microbiome.  These bad bacteria can increase the incidence of migraines, increasing histamine and inflammation leading to increased gut permeability (leaky gut), SIBO, and higher systemic inflammation.   A Ketogenic diet can reduce the incidence of migraine.  A Paleo diet like the AIP diet, that restricts carbohydrates (like from starchy vegetables) becomes a ketogenic diet.  This diet also changes the microbiome, eliminating the bad bacteria and SIBO that cause an increase in histamine, inflammation and migraine.  Fewer bad bacteria reduces inflammation, lowers migraine frequency, and improves leaky gut. Since I started following the low histamine ketogenic AIP paleo diet, I rarely get migraine.  Yes, I do eat carbs occasionally now, rice or potato, but still no migraines.  Feed your body right, feed your intestinal bacteria right, you'll feel better.  Good intestinal bacteria actually make your mental health better, too.  I had to decide to change my diet drastically in order to feel better all the time, not just to satisfy my taste buds.  I chose to eat so I would feel better all the time.  I do like dark chocolate (a migraine trigger), but now I can indulge occasionally without a migraine after.   Microbiota alterations are related to migraine food triggers and inflammatory markers in chronic migraine patients with medication overuse headache https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11546420/

Then we would need to cut out all meat and fish as they are richer sources of tyrosine than nuts and cheese. Something else about certain tyrosine rich foods must be the actual culprit.

I agree that KAN-101 looks promising, and hope the fast track is approved. From our article below: "KAN-101 shows promise as an immune tolerance therapy aiming to retrain the immune system, potentially allowing safe gluten exposure in the future, but more clinical data is needed to confirm long-term effects."
    • Scott Adams
Thank you so much for having the courage to share this incredibly vivid and personal experience; it's a powerful reminder of how physical ailments can disrupt our fundamental sense of self. What you're describing sounds less like a purely psychological body dysmorphia and more like a distinct neurological event, likely triggered by the immense physical stress and inflammation that uncontrolled celiac disease can inflict on the entire body, including the nervous system. It makes complete sense that the specific sensory input—the pressure points of your elbows on your knees—created a temporary, distorted body map in your brain, and the fact that it ceased once you adopted a gluten-free diet is a crucial detail. Your intuition to document this is absolutely right; it's not "crazy" but rather a significant anecdotal data point that underscores the mysterious and far-reaching ways gluten can affect individuals. Your theory about sensory triggers from the feet for others is also a thoughtful insight, and sharing this story could indeed be validating for others who have had similar, unexplainable sensory disturbances, helping them feel less alone in their journey.
    • Scott Adams
The most common nutrient deficiencies associated with celiac disease that may lead to testing for the condition include iron, vitamin D, folate (vitamin B9), vitamin B12, calcium, zinc, and magnesium.  Unfortunately many doctors, including my own doctor at the time, don't do extensive follow up testing for a broad range of nutrient deficiencies, nor recommend that those just diagnosed with celiac disease take a broad spectrum vitamin/mineral supplement, which would greatly benefit most, if not all, newly diagnosed celiacs. Because of this it took me decades to overcome a few long-standing issues I had that were associated with gluten ataxia, for example numbness and tingling in my feet, and muscle knots--especially in my shoulders an neck. Only long term extensive supplementation has helped me to resolve these issues.
