Biopsy Results Are In!

Well I just got my biopsy results and I definitely have Celiac Disease. It's so nice to have a confimed diagnosis.

Even after being gluten free for almost 4 weeks my biopsy was positive. Here is what the letter from my doctor says.

Dear Angela,

The biopsy of your duodenum showed changes consistant with Celiac Sprue, although they were fairly mild. I would encourage you to continue on your diet and to continue your "detective work" when trying new foods. As I suggested at the time of the endoscopy, I think we should repeat your tissue transglutaminase (the blood test for celiac sprue) in four to six weeks to see how you are doing.

A lab slip was included with the letter so that I can have my blood re-drawn sometime between 2/28 & 3/14 to see if my antibody levels are decreasing.

WOW it's such a relief to finally know with 100% certainty what my issue is.

Thank you so much to everyone here who has given me support time and time again. I would never have made it through this without this board.

I am happy that you have an answer. Even when a diagnosis is scary it is still better then the unknown.

I had a biopsy done last month that was "suggestive" of Celiac. I had blood work done last week and it all came back normal. So I am truly confused. I see my gastro next week so hopefully she'll shed some light. If I do have it, I want it to come back with flying colors. At this point I am almost hoping it is Celiac so that I don't have to go on wondering what the hell is wrong with me!

Hmmmmmm I don't get how a biopsy can be suggestive of celiac? Isn't a positive a definite positive? Maybe it was negative, but he saw signs that there had been damage there? I'd be confused to. Are you still on gluten? If not then chances are that your blood tests would come back perfectly normal. Good Luck and I really hope you get some answers soon. The worst part is not knowing :(!!

yes a biopsy can conf celiac disease or not but to get it conf you need to have blood work done to make sure

Awesome for you!!!! I think this is a sign to be encouraging to people when seeking a diagnosis. It makes things soooo much easier and I'm glad you feel better. Way to go!! It also goes to show that there are many wonderful doctors out there! So happy for you and your family!!!

Thank you everyone for your encouraging answers and thoughts. I'm so glad I fianlly know what I'm up against and the diet is working very well for me so far. My entire household is beginning to change for the better. Thank you so much to everyone here who has helped me through my panic stages.

I really wish everyone could get a diagnosis as easily as I did, but I do not wish that everyone had to go through the pain and sickness that I went through. I feel so badly for those that can't seem to get it in writing. It's not really that "important" for most of us, but it is truely a HUGE relief just to have it confirmed. I know I would have stayed gluten free no matter what, but It's just so much easier to do it diligently when I KNOW with 100% certainly what the consequences will be if I don't stick to the diet.

For those of you who haven't been able to get a difinitive diagnosis I just want to let you know that you guys are AWESOME for recognizing it and sticking with what you know if right for you. Too bad doctors wouldn't just diagnose you on symptoms and diet changes alone. Maybe some day that will be possible, but until then hopefully we'll all continue to educate others on Celiac.

The dramatic, rapid normalization of stool frequency and form after removing wheat, along with improved tolerance of legumes and plant foods, is a classic pattern seen in gluten-driven disease rather than functional IBS. IBS usually worsens with fiber and beans, not improves. The fact that you carry HLA-DQ2.2 means celiac disease is absolutely possible, even if it’s less common than DQ2.5, and many people with DQ2.2 present later and are under-diagnosed. Your hesitation to reintroduce gluten is completely understandable — quality of life matters — and many people in your position choose to remain strictly gluten-free and treat it as medically necessary even without formal biopsy confirmation.       oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

      Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.

      Under the circumstances, your decision to have the testing done on day 14 sounds very reasonable. But I think by now you know for certain that you either have celiac disease or NCGS and either way you absolutely need to eliminate gluten from your diet. I don't think you have to have an official diagnosis of celiac disease to leverage gluten free service in hospitals or institutional care and I'm guessing your physician would be willing to grant you a diagnosis of gluten sensitivity (NCGS) even if your celiac testing comes up negative. Also, you need to be aware that oats (even gluten free oats) is a common cross reactor in the celiac community. Oat protein (avenin) is similar to gluten. You might want to look at some other gluten free hot  breakfast cereal alternatives.
