Calling For A Prayer For My Sister!

Today when I got home from work, I got a call from my mom, my sister who is 20, had been up all night with bad "D" and ended up with a Dr's appointment this morning. At the Dr her blood pressure bottomed out and she passed out. She was rushed to the hospital and she is dehydrated.

I was just informed she has a Gastro Infection and has other tests pending.

I am worried, she has been healthy and never really sick now she is in the hospital and can barely breathe!!

Please send a little prayer her way. She is scared and I wish i could be there with her but she is over 2 and 1/2 hrs away.

I hope that she is okay....you must be so worried! But, the good thing is that she is getting the care she needs. Please keep us updated to let us know.

She will be in my prayers.

Amanda, that's horrible! I will keep her in my prayers. Please let us know how things go over the next few days. Hopefully they'll have some answers relatively quickly so you and and your family aren't in the dark for long. Let me know if you need anything. I'm not too far away if you need help. Anything, just let me know.

Angie-You are wonderful. I am glad you are so close. You are a great friend.

Right now she is resting, and my parents have left her. She is in a small hospital up in NEPA. She was in a room with an elderly person who was not doing too well, but they moved her into her own room, I am hoping so not to tramatize her. She has never been in a hospital.

I am a little angry, they waited until after 8 to give her an IV, she was so thirsty and hadn't had a thing, her Dr had ordered an IV at 12 when she went to the hospital, but for some reason it didn't get put in till 8 :blink: Poor girl! Hopefully she will get some sleep.

My poor mom, had to watch her daughter gasp for air and pass out a few times. I wish I could be there with them.

Your poor mother... I can't even imagine what that would be like watching your daughter suffer like that. It's ridiculous it took them that long to follow doctor's orders, especially since she was dehydrated. Hopefully that won't cause any setbacks in her recovery. Do they have any clue yet what is going on? I'm assuming she's being admitted over night, right? Does she have a boyfriend/husband/best friend who will be able to spend time with her while she's in the hospital? That always helped me. When I was in the hospital getting diagnosed with Celiac I was so sick I thought I was going to die and the only thing that brightened my day was my husband coming in and getting flowers from friends. I was in for a week. Hopefully your poor sister won't be in nearly that long. I hope they figure things out right away.

Will you be able to get out there this weekend if she's still sick or do you work this weekend?

That is absolutely negligent that she had to wait that long for an IV when she was dehydrated!

I remember when Eileen (my oldest dd, who is now 13) was 8 years old, she got sick in the morning, was sick both ends every 10 minutes all day long, and by 7 pm, her eyes sunk right in her face and she looked "off"...... I rushed her up to the after hours clinic and they took one look at her and rushed her next door to the hospital and she had an IV in her arm 2 minutes after arrival. She ended up being in the hospital for 1 week. It was a very nasty case of rotavirus......

I am hoping to get there this weekend, I dont work but with the IVF I have to go into clinic on certain mornings. I was supposed to go this past weekend...but with the interstates being closed I was stuck here, I-81 is the main way there.

No one is allowed to stay overnight, but her boyfriend was there up until they chased him out. At Hershey they allow people to stay overnight. I don't do well in hospitals (yet I work there which is odd) While I was in same day surgery and had complications in Sept, I had to stay overnight and having John there helped so much.

She might be there a few days. I personally think she should be in a better hospital, I am not knocking on small hospitals. I have a great community hospital down the street, I prefer it over my own hospital. No crowds so you get better attention. This hospital she is at, is not a place where there are ever young people. It is most for elderly residents in the area, they have not delivered babies there in years, no PEDS area, no young adults area. The ER has two beds. I think she has a better shot at a quicker recovery in Scranton. There is a little more advancement and if they get a diagnosis quicker, she will be on the mend sooner.

John and I are sending flowers in the morning.

My coworker who I share space with is also sick with a mystery stomach illness..... :unsure: I tried calling her tonight and her husband said she came home from work and went right to bed and has not been up since. She looked horrible all day, complained of stomach pain, body aches, chills, and she looked flushed. She had no energy, no appetite. Strangely my mom said my sister had been complaining about these things on and off for a few days. Yet last night, my mom saw my sister around 8 when she dropped by after her basketball game. My said she seemed fine. They ate some dinner. Now she is in the hospital. My thought food poisioning at first but now she is unsure too.

Well, I guess I will just go lie down and catch everyone up in the morning.

Any chance she ate any contaminated peanut butter??? Or that she also has Celiac on top of the infection???

She only eats JIF, and thats on occasion, she is not a big Peanut Butter fan. As for celiac, my sisters never showed signs of being sick, but they were also both adopted so they don't carry the same genes as my parents. We all do look very much alike though.

I haven't been able to get a hold of her yet this morning, I am hoping she is still sleeping. I am at work now and I am going to buy her some flowers to get delivered to my moms house and then my mom can take them to her.

Hi Amanda,

I'm just seeing this--I truly hope that by now your sister is improving and more comfortable.

I'm so sorry for all your family is having to go through--it's a very scary thing. I will keep your sister, as well as your family in my prayers. :)

Another update.

She is still in the hospital, will not come home today as she had hoped. (she really wants a shower) She is very contagious, my mom is not good with medical jargon so she forgot the name. I believe it is Rotavirus. Carrie feels better, but because I am going through IVF and my other sister is pregnant they suggest we stay away for a few days until antibotics start working.

She did love the flowers I sent, it was a boutique of daisies. She sounded a little more energetic, but not as much as she nearly is and not as drugged up as when I spoke with her last night.

Wow, it sounds like she's doing much better then. That's great news. Hopefully she'll be able to come home tomorrow and get her long awaited shower. I was really worried for you guys. Tori had rotavirus last year and she was soooooooooooo sick so I can definitely sympathize. We thought we were going to have to hospitalize her for it. It's definitely not a fun thing. Ugh...

Rotavirus is a nasty little bugger :angry: --my older son had it. But he got over it just fine, and so will your sister. Sounds like the worst is behind her. Bet that shower will feel like the best one she's ever had :D

Am sending good thoughts and prayers.

A quick word of advice--ask the admitting physician or whoever is the physician to waive the policy that doesn't allow people to stay overnight in her room, and cite the fact that the IV he ordered at noon wasn't put in until 8. Your sister needs an advocate to be with her 24 hours a day. In some ways, small hospitals can be better than big inner city ones, but the nurses are still overworked, and the mistakes are made far more often than anyone will admit.

If they don't waive the policy, call your health insurance company and raise holy heck until something changes. Tell the ins. co. about the fact that the IV ordered at noon didn't get put in for 8 hours, and that your sister's life was in jeopardy.

Whatever you do, do NOT leave your sister alone.

I'm so glad she is doing better now! She will really appreciate being home again for sure.

Is rotovirus something similiar to the Norwalk (sp) virus? It does sound like it.

I am so sorry, with the whole IVF surgery I forgot to update everyone. She has been home and although looking better and overall feeling better, she still has "D" So my mom keeps making her drink pedialyte to keep her body in balance. she has been back in school, she started her internship. I have not personally seen her, but from talking to her she seemed much better.

      Hi, @Ginger38, I've had shingles in the past.  I understand how miserable you're feeling.   Not only do i have the chickenpox virus lurking about, I also have the cold sore virus that occasionally flares with a huge cold sore on my lip when stressed or exposed to gluten.  The virus lives dormant in the nerves on the left side of my face.  It causes Bell's Palsy (resulting in drooling).  The cold sore virus is also in my eye.  My eye swells up and my vision is diminished permanently whenever I have a flare, so it's of the utmost importance to keep flares away and treat them immediately if they do happen so I don't lose any more vision.   I take the amino acid supplement L-Lysine.  Lysine messes with the replication of viruses, which helps the body fight them off.   I haven't had an outbreak for several years until this year when exceptionally stressed and contaminated, it flared up again. Lysine has been shown to be beneficial in suppression of viruses like the cold sore virus (a herpetic virus), the chickenpox virus (also a herpetic virus), as well as the HIV virus, and even the Covid virus.   I also take additional Thiamine in the form TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) because Thiamine has antiviral properties as well.   For pain, a combination of Thiamine (like TTFD or Benfotiamine or Thiamine Hydrochloride), with B12 Cobalamine, and Pyridoxine B6 have been shown to have analgesic properties which relieve pain and neuropathy.    The combination of Thiamine B1, Pyridoxine B6 and Cobalamine B12 really does work to relieve pain.  I take it for pain from crushed vertebrae in my back.  This combination also works on other pain and neuropathy.   I usually buy a supplement that combines all three and also Riboflavin B2 called EXPLUS online.  However, it's made in Japan and the price with the tariffs added makes it really expensive now.  But the combination of Thiamine B1, Pyridoxine B6 and B12 Cobalamine (and Riboflavin B2) still work even if taken separately.   I can't take Tylenol or ibuprofen because of stomach upsets.  But I can take the vitamin combination without side effects.  However, you can take the three vitamins at the same time as other pain relievers for added benefit.  The vitamins help other pain relievers work better. I hope you will try it.  Hopeful you'll feel better quickly.
