Wendy's gluten-free Menu Update - Nov 07

I just got the feeling to check Wendy's site for gluten-free items. We are loyal Frosty buyers but have not been brave enough to try the fries.

I think I remember reading that the fries are gluten-free, but because not all locations have a dedicated fryer for the fries, they don't list them as gluten-free. I couldn't find what I was thinking of via search, so I'm hoping someone can enlighten me.

My daughter has not had "fast food fries" since DX in May and has been really been craving them, but scared to try them anywhere.

Thoughts?

Oh no! I just ate there for dinner! I thought their fries were safe, I had a few off the kids plates - which were delicious, I think they changed their fries, which should have had me question their safety. I ate their baked potato and chili, both I know are safe. I didn't even think to ask, but I will next time <_< !

The only fries I am not horrified of are the waffle fries at Chick Fil A. I don't know of any other safe ones at this time.

It indicates that they may be cooked in the same oil as several allergens. Oddly, the chili no longer lists soy in it. Used to have soybean oil.

I never did the Wendy's fries because of the chicken nuggets. Sometimes they would get mixed in together..I was afraid of CC.

I wonder how recent this change is. I just sick after eating the chili just a month or so ago.

Do you guys have New York Fries kiosks in your malls in the States ? All they do is fries - I read somewhere that they are safe BUT some seasonings aren't so either stick to just salt or look it up (I guess they have different ones ?). When I go to the city over Christmas, I'm going to try some !

We have boardwalk fries in a lot of malls.

Their french fries are not on their gluten-free list because many restaurants cook them in the same oil as the nuggets and fish. Here is what the website says about the Fries:

Ingredients:

Potatoes, Vegetable Oil Shortening (contains one or more of the following: partially hydrogenated canola oil, partially hydrogenated soybean oil), Disodium Dihydrogen Pyrophosphate (color protector), Dextrose. Cooked in Vegetable Oil. Note: may be cooked in the same oil as Fish Fillets (where available) and Crispy Chicken Nuggets.

I have found Wendy's with dedicated fryers before, but you have to ask at each one. There hasn't been any change to the fries. There are no gluten ingredients in the fries themselves, but there are CC issues from the oil or wandering nuggets in the fryer. We do eat the fries occasionally from the Wendy's near our house that has a dedicated fryer.

I never would have thought it would be safe to eat at Wendy's..I was looking at the menu, the chicken salad would be nice but I see it has a "star" next to it because it contains maltodextrin, is that gluten-free at Wendys?

what do you normally order?

blueeyedmanda Community Regular

Our Wendy's doesnt have a dedicated fryer...when I asked they looked at me as if I have a 3rd eye!

we have one, but since they have soy in them, i cant eat them anyway. I was thinking of maybe tryting the chili tho since it is gluten and soy free and just ask for no cheese. But im still afraid to eat out lol.

Paula,

I know where you are coming from. When we travel, I bring my own road snacks and John does fast food. I am still a little uneasy about the fast foods. I am getting better with sit down places though. I don't dread them as much.

Thanks much everyone! I suppose I could have dug deeper in the ingredients to figure this out about Wendy's.

We also have a Chic Filet near us so I might give that a go as well. She's very skeptical of fast food and won't do it unless I assure her it is ubersafe. It's not something she'd eat all the time, but as a special treat, knowing they were safe, would just rock her world.

I used to get the potato at Wendy's, but looks like that's out for me at least. I just usually bring my own food and then buy a soda. No one's ever said anything.

Do you have a Panera Bread near you? I have heard they will prepare a salad for you in a clean bowl. I personally have not tried it.

Another sometimes safe quick option could be Chinese. You can get steamed shrimp and veggies with plain white rice, but you do have to ask them to prepare it in a clean bowl so there is no soy sauce CC. This is sometimes difficult if there is a language barrier.

I LOVE Panera Bread!! I honestly never, ever thought this would be a place I could eat at. I can't have gluten, soy or dairy. They actually have an ingredient list behind the counter that you can look at. It has every single item in there, from salads, to dressings, soups, etc. I've never had a problem with cc there either. I love the black bean soup, and the Fuji Apple Chicken salad (I have to get a different dressing than the one it comes with though, due to soy.)

Here is the latest gluten-free list they sent me:

I got glutened at Chic-Fil-A because there was a zucchini fried something or other in the bottom of my fries.

On the West coast here, we have In-N-Out. Their fries aren't as good as McD's were back when I could eat them...

I've never eaten Wendy's Fries. Love the chili (i order it with onions) and the potato, and frosty!

Do you have an in and out burger? Everything there is fine except their buns, of course.

Last week I had a Wendy's 1/2 lb Jalapeno Cheddar Double Melt:

"Two hot 'n juicy fresh ground beef patties with pepper jack cheese, warm cheddar cheese sauce, four strips of hickory-smoked bacon and sliced jalapeno peppers."

I went inside and ordered it on a bed of lettuce in leu of buns. I watched them make it and there was some confusion about the bed of lettuce. They didn't seem familiar with the concept.

It was too rich for my tastes. The bun plays a pivotal role in neutralyzing some of the grease, peppers, melted cheese, etc. Also had fries, but as they were barely tepid, they weren't that good. Fast food fries need to be fresh and HOT.

Didn't get glutoned, but did feel a little stomach queezyness from all the grease. Wouldn't really recommend it.

best regards, lm

At the location I go to their cheese sauce and gravy are safe too! The gravy is thickened with potato starch. :)

Is this Wendy's in the US, or Canada??...Wendy's here in Canada now has the ingredient lists up on the wall before you go to the tills, with the different columns and all, so its easier to remember what is/isn't safe...

McDonald's said they have gluten free fried and do not cook them in the same oil as the onion rings.

our Wendy's has not problem putting the hamburger on lettuce and into a plastic container for me.

My daughter eats across town and her Wendy's cant seem to understand what she wants.

She finally was able to explain it and so they are up on it now.

It just takes some education for those working there.

I had wendys ceasar chicken salad last week and got very sick from it..not sure if it was the salad or just a bug..but i'm not trying it again.

I had the same problem with my local Wendy's. It took literally 10 minutes to place the order, and they continually messed it up to the point that other customers were yelling at them for being "so stupid" as to not understand what was being asked. I won't return. It's a shame, because their fryer actually is dedicated, and I'd rather have their fries than those from McDonald's. Oh well!

Have faith, you will survive. I get mine from Pipingrock.com.  500 capsules of 10,000 IU for $22.  That is almost two years worth for me.  250 caps 5000 IU for $6.69 if you only take 5,000 a day.  It's like half the price of Walmart.

Testing can't alone be trusted.  Else why would it take so many years of testing and retesting and misdiagnosis to finally be told, yes you have Celiac Disease. As to what to eat, I like pre 1950 style food.  Before the advent of TV dinners.  Fresh food is better for you, and cooking from scratch is cheaper.  Watch Rachel Ray's 30 Minute Meals for how to cook.  Keep in mind that she is not gluten free, but her techniques are awesome.  Just use something else instead of wheat, barley, rye. Dr Fuhrman is a ex cardiologist.  His book Eat to Live and Dr Davis' book Wheatbelly were instrumental in my survival.

If you have DH you will likely also want to avoid iodine, which is common in seafoods and dairy products, as it can exacerbate symptoms in some people. This article may also be helpful as it offers various ways to relieve the itch--thanks for the tip about Dupixent, and I've added it to the article:

I just want to clarify that what I posted is a category of research summaries we've done over the years, and nearly each one shows that there is definitely a connection to celiac disease and migraine headaches. The latest study said: "the study did indicate some potential causal associations between celiac disease and migraine with or without aura, as well as between migraine without aura and ulcerative colitis...this study did not find evidence of a shared genetic basis..." Anyway, there is definitely a connection, and you can go through more of the articles here if you're interested: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/celiac-disease-amp-related-diseases-and-disorders/migraine-headaches-and-celiac-disease/

Two months ago, I started taking Dupixent for dermatitis herpetiformis and it has completely cleared it up. I can't believe it! I have had a terrible painful, intensely itchy rash for over a year despite going fully gluten-free. See if your doctor will prescribe Dupixent. It can be expensive but I am getting it free. When the dermatitis herpetiformis was bad I could not do anything. I just lay in bed covered in ice packs to ease the pain/itching and using way too Clobetasol. Dapsone is also very good for dermatitis herpetiformis (and it is generic). It helped me and the results were immediate but it gave me severe anemia so the Dupixent is better for me. Not sure if it works for everyone. I cannot help with the cause of your stress but from experience I am sure the severe stress is making the celiac and dermatitis herpetiformis worse. Very difficult for you with having children to care for and you being so sick. Would this man be willing to see a family therapist with you? He may be angry at you or imagine that your illness is a psychosomatic excuse not to take care of him. A therapist might help even if he won't go with you. Also do you have any family that you could move in with (with the kids) for a short time to get away? A break may be good for you both.
