Since I'm off dairy and soy, I use coconut oil as a general butter replacement. It's great on popcorn, and I love it on toast with cinnamon, too.

My other main splurge is hemp milk for my daily latte. :-)

Oh the Hemp milk is yummy. :) I use Living Harvest. I dont drink coffee, but this looks good:

I bought this coconut oil the last time and I am REALLY enjoying it. Nice fresh coconut smell and taste:

It is a little cheaper than yours RiceGuy, but I might try yours next time and compare. This new company also sells the Macadamia oil.

Thanks for the link. It does appear a bit different than most others since it's from Fiji, and not fermented. However, even they use the same possibly deceptive wording to describe the quality of their oil. Specifically, they say it is cold-pressed from chopped and dried coconuts, but they don't say how the coconuts are dried. In my investigations, every one I could verify was dried with high temperatures, which usually gives the oil a roasted taste. Since you've found it to taste like fresh coconut, then perhaps the difference is due to not being fermented. Anyway, it's still too pricey for my wallet, but fortunately I have a local source for shredded coconut. Not the best I've tasted, but it's cheap enough.

Chebe bread mixes and Pamela's Organic Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip Cookies. I buy Chebe mixes in bulk now. Oh, and homemade ice cream. I made a killer blueberry cheese cake ice cream last week. I also tried Xylitol last week; MAJOR splurg at that price. I'm still undecided on that one though.

Organic Almond Butter mmm melts in your mouth, I use it frequently in Thai dishes replacing standard peanut butter, rich and flavorful. $6.99 @ grocery but sooo worth it! :)

For some reason, I'm not a big Almond Butter fan. To me, it's not worth the money. All the different brands I've tried have been flavorless in my opinion. I definitely prefer real peanut butter. Nothing beats it to me.

My current addiction is to Trader Joes' Gluten Free Granola. It's not that expensive but I buy so much of it that it gets a little pricey!!! I love the Fruit & Nut one. MMMMM... I could eat a whole package in one sitting... :D

Real maple syrup and maple butter from Quebec is my splurge becasuse it means going there to get it :) And REALLY good steak.

OK people....I made those grain free chocolate chip cookies. I had to. ;) I used the Enjoy Life choco chips because they are gluten, soy and dairy free. :) I know I cannot eat a lot of chocolate, so this was a definite SPLURGE. But they were oh...oh....so yummy....So I told my DH and DD to eat them all up......LOL

LOL You're so funny ;)

No Funny is my fight to resist making more today. ;)

I just ordered some of your favorite coconut oil RiceGuy. Will let you know. :)

I also purchased some Lo-Han sweetener. Anyone tried it? It says no calories and no glycemic index just like stevia. It will have a "mild" fruit flavor......

Fresh Pineapple I budget for one a week. It's so hard to not eat the whole thing when I am making a recipe with them. I love the way it drips all the way down to your armpit when your cutting it too! lol ;)

I wanna know how you cut your pineapple to get the juice to run DOWN to your armpit

OH Yum....I have been wanting to try the almond butter but it was $7.69 at the store!! OUCH!!! At least I know that it is worth it and may have to treat myself here soon. I eat PB every day, but there is no way I could to the AB at that price daily.

My splurges:

Kinnikinnick Donuts for DS

Pamela's Wheat Free Bread..I buy it by the case for bread, bagels & pizza dough

Beef Tenderloin (for Filet Mignon)

Scallops (sea scallops)

A little off topic, but what's the best way to cook expensive meat? I am too scared to buy steak because every time I have, it hasn't turned out as good as "restaurant" steaks. I don't have a BBQ, but I do have a little George Foreman grill.

Hm, my splurges right now are Glutino pretzels, Enjoy life chocolate chips (although they've been torturing me in my freezer for the last 3 weeks - on a sugar fast for one more week!), and I just bought a huge bag of frozen blueberries (the only sugar I've been eating). Mostly I splurge on recipes, as in, baking yummy things that I shouldn't be eating!

You might get better results using your oven broiler or pan searing in cast iron.

Alton Brown has a broiler technique that is really terrific. You should be able to find it on the food tv site.

Eggs are my splurge. I buy them from a local woman and with five people eating them, it is crazy. But they are so amazingly good and flavorful.

I really have to fight not spending too much money on food. I just ordered a case of LaraBars from Amazon-mmmm. they worked out to about $1 each- certainly less than the HFS, but still way expensive. I need to just order the ingredients and make my own. I also use ev coconut oil, good grassfed chicken, lots and lots of good spices.

I don't think I have as many splurges as I used to, plus as a single mom with 1 income I need to budget. Most of my money goes to organic veggies and chicken. I buy seafood too. We don't eat red meat, so I don't worry about that. I do a lot of baking so I end up spending a lot on vanilla that I like. I also use coconut oil, but not as often as I used to. I wish I could buy everything I wanted lol, but sometimes I just need to compromise like well do I really need this? It's kind of hard really.

We went to Nashville over July 4 and I visited Whole Foods, since we don't have one close by home. I stocked up on everything I can't find in the health food stores here. Some of it I put in the RV to have when we were camping. Two weekends ago, when we opened the refrigerator, it was warm and everything was thawed out. The temp in the freezer was 70 degrees! Needless to say, I had to throw out my various Bell & Evans chicken varieties as well as everything else....lost alot of money there. That trip was a wasted splurge!

sickchick Community Regular

70 degrees in the freezer! that might be a bit of a challenge! bummer.

Katsby sorry you are feeling 'pinched' right now financially- hopefully things will balance out for you and your family quickly! B)

Shay gimme a Lo-han report after you do some experimenting Doll! :)

crunchy_mama what are your favorite Lara Bars?

collete- would love for you to come cook for me! You mention some of my favorite foods.

my splurges:

endangered species dark chocolate- the one with blueberries and the one with cranberries and almonds.

Hazelnut milk- oh lord, this is so good. Almond milk is okay, this is like desert in a cup. yummy. I had never had any before going gluten-free. One good thing that came out of it.

Perfectly Praline soy ice cream by Purely Decadent. so unbelieveably creamy and buttery with no dairy at all!!! My hubby is allergic to pecans and walnuts so I rarely ever get any, so this ice cream is all mine!!!

Organic Blueberries- Pricey, but I go to a pick your own farm and they give me a discount when I pick a ton(I have spent $100 plus a visit before!!!!I freeze them). My bushes are finally starting to produce some.

organic maranatha almond butter for homemade sushi. yummy. I eat lots of peanut butter so the almond butter is a much more rare treat. But I love peanut butter

Organic bannanas. I have to have bannanas around. They are all I can eat when I get sick.

Brownie mix- taste so good, no one can tell they are gluten free.

Being a country girl I am lucky to have so much organic fruit around. All my friends with orchards and gardens grow organically, including us. Our trees aren't old yet, but we get pears, grapes, cherries, and apples from neighbors. We are blessed and I can and freeze like mad. So I splurge with my time on the canning.

sickchick Community Regular

ohhohhohh!!! I love to can too!

I was gathering all my 'quipment to make some blackberry jam. I used to grow fruit trees but that was back when I had a house with a yard. Not easy to do on deck with half shade in one-bedroom apt! LOL B)

You must be in organic fruit heaven! lucky fedora!

Praline used to be my favorite (before I knew I was lac-tarded) I'd slice up bananas and pour gallons of caramel on top :) I think I am going to figure out how to make dairy-free caramel, there has to be a way! What is in Purely Decadent? I wonder if I could find it... does it have soy lecithin or carageenan in it?

Which Hazelnut milk are you buying? Is it Pacific Foods? I can find that one but it has carageenan I think or soy lecithin.

good to see your face, pretty!

I guess my splurge is to not run out of coconut oil so I can pop organic popcorn in it. Love to crunch a bowl full several nights a week while I read. I gotta have several bags of chocolate chips in the cupboard for baking cookies and muffins...my favorite thing to do. And of course you have to have all those flours to go with them too.

To play it safe, use Vasoline Lip Therapy. No questions as to it containing gluten.

jmartes, Thank you for sharing  more information with us. Most of us Celiacs whose problems do not clear up with in a few years have to decide what to do next. We can keep seeing DR.s and hope that we will get some  medication or advice that will improve our health. Or we can go looking for other ways to improve our health. Usually Celiac Disease is not a killer disease, it is a disabling disease as  you have found out. You have time to find some ways to help you recover. Stay on your gluten-free diet and be more careful in avoiding cross contamination . KnittyKitty  and others here can give you advice about avoiding some foods that can give you the gluten auto immune reaction and advice about vitamins and supplement that help celiacs. You may need to take higher doses of Vit. B12  and D3.  About 20 years before a Dr. suggested I might have Celiac disease I had health problems that all other Dr said they could not identify or treat. I was very opposed to alternative providers and treatments. So many people were getting help from a local healer I decided to try that out. It was a little helpful but then, because I had a good education in medical laboraties she gave me a book  to read and what did I think. With great skeptism I started reading and before I was half way through it I began using the methods outlined in the book. Using those herbs and supplements I went from hardly able to work to being able to work almost fulltime. I still use that program. But because I had undiagnosed celiac disease by 10 years later some  of my problems returned and I started to loose weight.    So how does a person find a program that will benefit them? Among the programs you can find online there are many that are snake oil scams and some that will be beneficial. by asking around, as I did. Is there an ND in your area? Do they reccomend that person? If you would like to read about the program I use go to www.drclark.net

It's unfortunate that they won't work with you on this, but in the end sometimes we have to take charge of our own health--which is exactly what happened to me. I did finally get the tests done, but only after years of going down various rabbit holes and suffering. Just quitting gluten may be the best path for you at this point.

My doctor didn't take the time to listen to anything. I don't even think she knows what it means. She is more concerned about my blood pressure that is caused by her presence than anything else and just wants to push pills at me. The so-called dermatologist wouldn't do a skin test. she prescribed all of these silly antihistamine skin meds. This lady didn't even know what she was talking about and said "they never turn out as celiac, they usually just say it's dermatitis so here's your meds," just like my regular quack. I'm trying to change insurance companies at the moment and that has been a battle because of red tape, wrong turns, and workers having wrong phone numbers. What a joke! The allergy blood days say I have a wheat allergy of .31. Hopefully it's just that and until I find a decent doctor and dermatologist, I'll just lay off the wheat anyway, since it gives me asthma, high blood sugar, and joint pain. So frustrated at this point. The rash on my back of arms/elbows is mostly gone. Both calves and chest have started up. smh. It comes and goes. It fades faster now, though, although my forearms still produce one or two bumps on each side. The itching has calmed down a lot except for the bump area. I have dry skin to begin with so anything affecting it just makes it crazy. i'm never going to eat wheat again. I don't care if they need it to produce results or if it is just an intolerance, allergy, or celiac. It gives me hell.

I had the test done by one of the specialist through second pcp I had only a few months because he was saying I wasn't.Even though Im positive HLA-DQ2 .My celiac is down played.I am with new pcp, seeing another girl doctor who wants to do another breathe test next month though Im positive sibo this year.I have high blood pressure not sure if its pain from sciatica or sibo, ibs or hidden gluten. Im in disability limbo and I should have never been a bus driver because im still suffering and trying to heal with zero income except for my husband. This isnt fare that my health is dictating my living and having ti beg for being revalidation of my disregarded celiac disease. Its an emotional roller coaster I don't want to be on and the medical made it worse.New pcp new gi, exhausted, tired and really fed up. GI doctor NOT girl..
