Uno's Gluten Free Menu - Wrong!

OMG! I just ate at Uno's. They listed Baby Back Ribs as on the Gluten Free menu. Then, as I was going out the door they had the nutritional kiosk, so out of curiosity I wanted to find out how much fat I just ate and guess what I see??

Allergens: Soy, Wheat - in the sauce they put on it.

Now they should have said "order without sauce" on the Gluten Free Menu.

This is a huge liability. Do we have an legal rights on misinformation?

Please let me know. Thank you.

Wow! That is terrible! When my son and I ate there a few weeks ago they served a bun on his hamburger that he ordered off the gluten free menu. I asked if the bun was gluten free and the waitress said yes. Then, after a few seconds, the waitress took the burger away from my son after he had taken a bite and said she needed to double check. Of course, the bun was not gluten free.

I'm gonna state my two cents on this. I have not read the information you gave so I can't say about it but my comment is about liability & a law suit.

I understand how angry this must have made you. I agree that if this is true they need to change the rib sauce status & note it on the menu. When these places who are trying to get celiacs out of their homes & be able to eat once in a while away from home - I feel is terrific that they are trying. I do not want to get ill either but I don't feel a law suit is the answer. We celiacs need to help these places that are trying to give us more choices than home to eat . The celiac community has lost several nice places to dine because of law suits. Then when other places hear of the law suits they also stop trying to serve gluten-free . Law suits are a no win situation for celiacs. If one needs a quick buck then they sue. I would rather help educate these places that are trying to give us a chance to feel like part of the human race again.

If we continue to help show where problems exist & they make corrections then we all win....

I also understand you did not state you yourself are filing a law suit.

The best thing we all can do is educate our communities. After all one can get sick from eating at Grandmas. You know the old saying "S__ __ T Happens"!!!!!

I'm going to look at this at our local Uno's & I will bring it up to the manager...

When i found the manager at Red Robbins in Exton PA really interested in our eating issues, i left my Triump dinning out card with him and he ordered a set of the cards and hung all ten around the kitchen. I went back many times and they were always eager to accomadate us. sure it's hard but until that manager left and new one came in.........it was one of the 3 places i felt i could eat out.

That was wonderful to do that!. Our Red Robbin is very good as well. Uno's cooperate even took the time & energy to send each of their places a video to show how to handle, prepare all gluten-free , so I think that states that they are serious about learning to get it correct.

I did suggest them having a few more topping choices ie: peppers, onions, olives & so on & the kitchen chef told me he would not do that until he got directions from cooperate to do this properly.They showed me how they only do gluten-free pizza the first thing in the morning after everything is washed down & sanitized. All gluten-free pizzas then go back into the box in which they arrived & are sealed closed until someone orders, box is opened in a corner of the kitchen , sealed right back up. Our chef only permits himself & one other kitchen person to handle gluten-free because he said the others are not trained enough to handle. So one of the two is alway on duty at our UNo's.

NOw you will have to try to educate the new mgr. at your Red Robin!

If we all educate out communities we will have so many more choices & life will be good once again. There is light at the end of the tunnel if we give our all!!!!!

Thanks for your replies. I just spoke with Uno's and they are sending a written apology and $10 in vouchers to the restaurant and they thanked me for bringing the mistake to their attention. The more we can educate the better.

Thank you for letting us know. I haven't had a chance to contact them as it was our first year gluten-free anniversary for my gluten-free group & the event was a big success.

anyway I think that was kind that they gave you a good response. I think Uno's is truly interested in the gluten-free & are trying. Now the question is --- does the sauce have gluten & is it off the menu now or is it okay (ribs) & they forgot to change the nutritional guide?

I've only eaten the pizza but was consdiering the ribs next time......

I would have to agree with you, Mamaw. I always appreciate that the restaurants that I have eaten at are at least trying to accommodate us. Also, I have yet to eat at a restaurant that advertises a gluten-free menu that did not also have a disclaimer on that menu stating basically, that while they try, there are no guarantees. I eat a one restaurant rather frequently because the manager is also a celiac and they have a wonderful gluten-free menu with lots of really good choices on it. I ordered a glass of water with lemon and drank it before they served my meal. It was a busy night so it took a while to be served and within 1/2 hour of drinking the water with lemon, I got sick. So obviously there was cross contamination there. I think that by eating in any establishment that serves both toxic and non-toxic meals you are accepting that you are taking a risk. I ate at an Uno's in Chicago once. OMG! Their pizza was sooooo good.

I got yet another phone call from Uno's. They told me that if I order the Ribs off the menu, they automatically give you the Citrus sauce, which does have gluten in it. You have to ask for the regular BBQ sauce. They're going to update the website so that it'll mention that you have to say that.

It really stinks to get glutened. I guess you just have to think of yourself as the sacrificial lamb. Because you got zapped and you were kind enough to point it out so that the restaurant corrected things, someone else will not have to go through what you did. God works for us and THROUGH us.

I can remember the smell of Uno's so well. I live in the midwest in an area where the closest thing we can get to Uno's pizza is the boxed version at the deli in our local grocery store. My husband was not impressed, nor was I.(This was before I was diagnosed.) It's not just about the pizza, but the whole Uno's experience. Heavy sigh.

I would think that Uno's will jump on this error & tell all the staff in the kitchen who prepares gluten-free foods.

Smokey Bones is another oone that had a mistake. They were stating pulled pork as gluten-free but the chicken broth they use has gluten in it so they pulled it from the gluten-free menu. I loved their pulled pork! Why can't they just find a gluten-free chicken broth--- well I know the answer COST......

We just got the gluten-free menu at our Uno's in CLT, NC. I called them to confirm that they carry the gluten-free pizza-I guess some don't. I am so excited that they have it! Then I went on their website and if you sign-up for their customer list you get a Free appetizer. I don't know if there are any gluten-free appetizer's but, I always go with non-gluten-free people. Free food, is free food!!

My son and husband ate gluten free pizza at Uno's on the Upper West Side in New York City today. My husband said that it was really good -- for him that meant better than the Amy's frozen pizza that he enjoys -- and my son (who is incredibly picky) liked it, too. For both of them, it was the FIRST time to eat pizza at a restaurant since going gluten free over 2 years ago. It was the FIRST time my picky eating son ate a meal at a restaurant -- instead of food that I bring from home. For us, it's a really big deal to be able to find a restaurant that has kid-friendly gluten free food... not a hamburger patty no bun, etc.. but an actual meal.

Please try to be supportive of UNO's in their effort to serve gluten-free food. If we are supportive of restaurants like UNO's -- instead of litigious -- they'll be more likely to continue to offer gluten-free foods and improve their employee training. If we start lawsuits, they'll just stop serving gluten-free food.

And, other restaurants thinking about offering gluten-free food will look at these legal issues and be afraid to offer gluten-free.

This is a very good point, and I agree entirely. Lawsuits will not help us, and each one increases the chance that a company will decide that the risk outweighs the benefit of offering gluten-free options on the menu.

Help them to do the job better. Use coaching skills--always start with a positive, and end with a positive if you can. Something like:

I'm glad that you have a gluten-free menu, since I really need to avoid gluten. Your menu didn't say clearly that I should order X without the sauce, but I have now learned that the usual sauce has gluten in it. Do you think you could add the notation "order without the sauce" or "order with alternative sauce" to your gluten-free menu? Again, thank you for your efforts in support of those of us who must avoid gluten.

You'll catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

It's okay . Not everyone reads the other threads in the post before they reply as well. That is where things get repeated. But don't be upset. When I posted first I stated that I didn't assume you were filing a lawsuit.....I certainly understand your anger with Uno's . Really I don't think we can without reservation trust anyone including relatives. Accidents happen to all of us when we least expect it.... & I can say with all my being - no one is happy when this happens.

I feel you were stating a point about Uno's when you posted & I thank you for that to give us a head's up that we must read everything & not become lazy & just assume someone else is going to be responsible for our health & welfare.What is gluten-free today may not be tomorrow & vice versa....

      Thank you so very much Scott.  Just having someone understand my situation is so very helpful.  If I have one more family member ask me how my little itchy skin thing is going and can't you just take a pill and it will go away and just a little bit of gluten can't hurt you!!!! I think I will scream!!
